Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

This song always creeped me out as a kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 12:43pm Parq:

Hah- I woke up this morning with "Cool Water" on my mind, and I always associate it with Uncle Michael.
  Fri. 8/17/18 12:43pm Dean:

But now I'm a man. I can handle it, pretty much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 12:44pm Parq:

What I never could figure out: is "Dan" a guy he's travelling with, or his horse?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 12:44pm Uncle Michael:

Parq!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 12:45pm Webhamster Henry:

I think Dan is the Horse!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 12:46pm Uncle Michael:

Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 12:52pm The Oscar:

Afternoon all! For whatever reason they had us sing "Cool Water" in fourth grade. I always thought Dan was an odd name for a horse, but I did enjoy singing about a guy dying of thirst.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 12:53pm Uncle Michael:

Oscar!

These last two tracks, political commentary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:00pm Uncle Michael:

Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:03pm coelacanth∅:

so was that cool water the same cool water that Hank sang? (in which case i'm sorry i missed it, even though it must pale in comparison) ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:04pm Uncle Michael:

I don't know that there's any other Cool Water.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:06pm Rich in Washington:

OK. I went for my walk and was hearing that awesome Osmonds track, which I woulda never guessed was them..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:06pm Rich in Washington:

and I have that record. I obviously haven't listened to much of it.
  Fri. 8/17/18 1:07pm Dean:

Hank, same song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpsE4lShiIw
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:08pm Rich in Washington:

I think there's a slightly different version of Cool Water. My dad used to play some kind of Best of record by them often when I was a tadpole and I recall the version I remember as sounding just slightly different (cursed with a weird phonographic memory).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:11pm coelacanth∅:

seems like a song title that would get around. i'd bet there's at least one other song named "cool water"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:14pm Uncle Michael:

Rich, I'm pretty sure the Sons recorded it several times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:15pm coelacanth∅:

Hank recorded it once, that i know of, but there's a version with guitar overdubs that sounds pretty different than the bare version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:16pm Rich in Washington:

I am sure you are right. I have this weird OCD-ish thing about versions of songs, which is often fouled by the fact that artists would often record different versions of their songs for different labels, etc. I get somewhat particular about a certain recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:21pm northguineahills:

To dig, or not to dig, that is the Doug....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:23pm coelacanth∅:

Rich, i can relate. even if i don't like a version, i'm interested to hear it. i will always (almost always) have a favorite though.
Avatar Fri. 8/17/18 1:26pm ndbob:

I need to go - good to catch part of your show UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:26pm Rich in Washington:

It's funny how that is more of a thing with music in the 40s/50s/early 60s but after that, it's somewhat rare-ish for an artist to record different versions of the same song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:28pm Uncle Michael:

See ya Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:28pm doctorjazz:

Been enjoying the show in the car (much better way to listen than at work, but usually don't have the luxury ). Shopping stop next!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:33pm dutchtheo:

Tickling the strings, cure for after diner dip, aloha
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:36pm Rich in Washington:

OMG! A real Reuben! They're incredibly hard to find where I live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:37pm Rich in Washington:

What kind of dressing, UM?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:39pm Rich in Washington:

I am particularly proud of my skillet steaks. It took me years of bland, grey steaks before I stumbled on how to do it right. I almost prefer them to my barbeque grill steaks..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:39pm Uncle Michael:

mayo, a little ketchup, a little relish, a bit of horseradish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:40pm northguineahills:

I usually don't cook meat, but, I have yet to find decent corned beef. But, I rarely eat, I wouldn't want anything go to waste, but you gave me some good ideas....

/lately I've had insane, yet delicious culinary ideas late at night.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:40pm Rich in Washington:

Nice! I don't think I've ever tried horseradish on a reuben before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

I've almost entirely transitioned to steaks in an iron skillet, preheated in the oven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:41pm Rich in Washington:

I only see corned beef at supermarkets around here around St. Patty's day, and then, it doesn't look very good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:41pm Rich in Washington:

I just recently read about that preheat method but I haven't tried it yet. Worth it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:41pm doctorjazz:

I have a memory of my mom making corned beef and tongue (nobody would eat the tongue after seeing it in its natural state
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:42pm V Priceless:

Hey Unc! Nice Strawbs cut!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:43pm Uncle Michael:

No wasted corned beef...the end that's not happily sliced becomes hash...red flannel hash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:43pm northguineahills:

I love tongue! As a kid in Japan, I would always order it at the local grill....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:43pm Rich in Washington:

I used to eat tongue tacos at my favorite taco stand, but had an undercooked one and it grossed me out to no end and I also once read that beef tongue is one of those mad cow high risk meats, especially if undercooked - so now I can't eat them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:44pm doctorjazz:

Still can't eat tongue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:45pm Rich in Washington:

I've had tripe tacos and in menudo, but it's not my cup of tea. Also in pho. No pho king way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:45pm Uncle Michael:

VP! Wondered if the Strawbs would draw you out.

Way worth it, Rich...much better Maillard effect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:45pm Rich in Washington:

The same taco stand has cabeza, beef brains, but I can't do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:47pm Doug Schulkind:

Meh
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

Right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

New thing with steaks is marinating in shio koji. Google it.
  Fri. 8/17/18 1:49pm Dean:

Cabeza is not beef brains. It's the meat around the skull. Sesos are brains. I've had un taco con sesos at King Taco in South Central LA. Was yummy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:50pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks Dean! I just assumed, given my rough Spanish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:51pm Rich in Washington:

Isn't that also what constitutes headcheese?
  Fri. 8/17/18 1:51pm Dean:

I think so, but given my rough Swiss, I don't know for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

my headcheese is full of holes.
  Fri. 8/17/18 1:53pm Dean:

headcheese=hovercraft; holes=eels
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:54pm Uncle Michael:

I teed that up.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:57pm Listening Out There:

I think Irwin also put this on Songs in the Key of X....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:57pm Parq:

Shooby was a compelling demonstration that "follow your dreams no matter what people say" isn't always good advice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:58pm Rich in Washington:

There was a somewhat expansive issue of the original Human Horn collection recently. I am sure Irwin was involved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:58pm jmd:

just on my way out to work and had to turn around and find out what the hell this song is (Shooby Taylor)! Terrific!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 1:58pm northguineahills:

Shooby!

-off to lunch in a bit, thanks UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/17/18 2:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Wouldn't it be funny as hell if Shooby Taylor was in actuality Cecil Taylor pulling our legs. Oh God, please make it so.
