Bonjour, touristes. On Fabio's board, they mentioned news about the record fair. Is it true, is it cancelled?

Was just on the NYC subway, people were edgy, sullen.

Handy Haversack:

@Ken -- I saw only one person say that and don't see anything about it on the main site ... so maybe just normal crisis flailing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm

I think Julien Temple's Glastonbury doc, ostensibly in English with excited Welsh people talking fast, could do that for you.

for a mostly digital podcast archive, this cassette is a wonderful artifact! definitely worth your pledge of $20 or more

JakeGould:

The plus side of this sudden working from home is that my coworkers actually have to communicate with me in writing and clearly define what they need. In the office, I get a lot more unorganized requests so that is a silver lining here.

The sad thing is the streets and subways are a wee bit emptier and a bit tense. Not a day this week I haven’t seen at least one person with a face mask on. First it was (honestly) mainly Asians… Now it’s almost everyone else as well.

But I wonder about the record fair news. Perhaps it was discussed during Fabio’s show? Maybe at a 5:30pm-ish?

Listener Robert:

I recognize the "CQ" at the start because it's in such common use, but the rest of the code is too fast for me.
  6:32pm
Listener Robert:

Last fall when I wanted to get a friend's attention in a crowd as to the fact I was in the car, I tried honking a CQ repeatedly on the horn. I figured that in a crowd that size, there'd be someone who knew code and then word would get around that someone was trying to get someone's attention, but it didn't work. Over that terrain the car horn was practically inaudible.

Rich in Washington:

This is a not-to-be-missed show for me. Such a creative use of the radio medium. I really love this show.
  6:39pm
Listener Robert:

I ust remember that on the fragment played in that mix, what followed the "CQ" was "DE....". "CQ" means "seek you" but is used internationally. The backward etymology that it's "call to quarters" is cute but a lie, just as is the backwards etymologizing of SOS as "save our ship" or "save our souls" when it's just an easy-to-hear sequence in code having no origin in the letters.

and the creative mixing on Radio Ravioli. I dig freeform radio but I especially love live audio collaging. This is why I really love WFMU and its freakform 'format' (if you can call it that!).

JakeGould:

@KenFromHydePark: Also languages transition from casual to being pigeonholed. Like Yiddish used to be a casual language spoken all over Jewish communities in NYC; religious and secular. I grew up up with that being spoken commonly in the 1970s and even 1980s. Now it’s really only used in the more Conservative and Orthodox communities in NYC which is foreign to me.
