I've been noodling with Linux since the early 90's and have yet to really find any build that 100% replaces a standard office desktop. Which reminds me, I need to wipe one of my old laptops from the Tech Graveyard in my bedroom and try an install of SOMETHING on it. May just go back to Red Hat or try Ximian.

As in you have to have an Android phone for the mandatory login info and remote email/calendar stuff, and ditto for Citrix on desktop. It was just too much of a pain in the ass for an IT department to be constantly trying to keep up with people trying to squeeze the last bit of life out of ancient but expensive Apple hardware, people having no idea how to get into admin mode on an iPhone, etc.

I actually had this argument with a partner. I had to politely point out that a serviceable HP laptop with all the Windows/MSOffice fixings was $500-ish at Costco. And they were being cheap and said no. They also insisted on printing out PDFs that were hundreds of pages long and hand-marking them instead of making easily-shared redlines. Me, I'll be lucky if I get a pat on the head and a cookie as a bonus/raise this year and this person, a full partner, was hemming and hawing over $500 and the cost of printer cartridges (which they wouldn't have needed if they spent the fucking $500 on a usable laptop).

Mom was so (justifiably) proud of herself when I got this call -- it was one of the days where I was going batshit on a foreign language project and our standard codeword for "too busy to talk during day, talk after work" was "only call if you need a kidney." Well, Mom had Done Something that messed up her startup on her Mac desktop all in one. She REALLY didn't want to bother me, so she fired up the refurb Chromebook that I had gotten her so that she could surf/watch movies in bed (easier to type on than her iPad and easier to just put on her lap). She Googled the problem and fixed it herself, and she was so proud of herself! Of course every IT person knows that 99% of problems can be fixed with a fast online search. Glad she had the redundant machine.

Also, for Astoria locals and those nearby, there’s an incredible, unique guitar player Dad I know from the neighborhood doing a show at a cool, corner bar called Let Love Inn, on Monday night at 9. He’s an amazing slide jazz/blues/soul/funk/country/rock player who does instrumental covers. Band is pickup guys he knows who are invariably amazing too. World class, really. Plays monthly gigs there. No cover, pass the hat (drinks kind of ridiculously priced, be warned. But the show is worth it) Email if you wanna meet (or just reply here). Back to the roof to cram in some yoga among the laundry racks!

I've been noodling with Linux since the early 90's and have yet to really find any build that 100% replaces a standard office desktop. Which reminds me, I need to wipe one of my old laptops from the Tech Graveyard in my bedroom and try an install of SOMETHING on it. May just go back to Red Hat or try Ximian.

I actually had this argument with a partner. I had to politely point out that a serviceable HP laptop with all the Windows/MSOffice fixings was $500-ish at Costco. And they were being cheap and said no. They also insisted on printing out PDFs that were hundreds of pages long and hand-marking them instead of making easily-shared redlines. Me, I'll be lucky if I get a pat on the head and a cookie as a bonus/raise this year and this person, a full partner, was hemming and hawing over $500 and the cost of printer cartridges (which they wouldn't have needed if they spent the fucking $500 on a usable laptop).

Didn't understand the difference between an email client and webmail, among other things. I mean, my Mom, may she rest in peace, at 80, knew more about how to use her machine than this lady who is around my age. Mom was so (justifiably) proud of herself when I got this call -- it was one of the days where I was going batshit on a foreign language project and our standard codeword for "too busy to talk during day, talk after work" was "only call if you need a kidney." Well, Mom had Done Something that messed up her startup on her Mac desktop all in one. She REALLY didn't want to bother me, so she fired up the refurb Chromebook that I had gotten her so that she could surf/watch movies in bed (easier to type on than her iPad and easier to just put on her lap). She Googled the problem and fixed it herself, and she was so proud of herself! Of course every IT person knows that 99% of problems can be fixed with a fast online search. Glad she had the redundant machine.

Just can’t keep from all the things piling up lately… Kids being schlepped to sports 4x a week; lingering, nagging ailments (hip bursitis, tennis elbow, etc) requiring PT 3x and special exercises every day; doctor appts; etc. Such a drag. Am considering going to the record fair on Sat. Anyone definitely going? Also, for Astoria locals and those nearby, there’s an incredible, unique guitar player Dad I know from the neighborhood doing a show at a cool, corner bar called Let Love Inn, on Monday night at 9. He’s an amazing slide jazz/blues/soul/funk/country/rock player who does instrumental covers. Band is pickup guys he knows who are invariably amazing too. World class, really. Plays monthly gigs there. No cover, pass the hat (drinks kind of ridiculously priced, be warned. But the show is worth it) Email if you wanna meet (or just reply here). Back to the roof to cram in some yoga among the laundry racks!
