Yes, I'm sure there were stations that played it, but I checked the Grammy winner of that year, and it was Wes Montgomery. I would guess that cuts from his album were played a couple dozen times on a mainstream station, in contrast to these long and abstract tracks. Nonetheless, I believe that if people were exposed to it a couple of times, they would start tapping their foot to Tony Williams and then say, "Hmmm, there's something *to* this record."

actually, in trying to find out when that Dot show was (i think it was 1979) I saw a clipping of the jazz stuff in Boston that same time. in a one month period there were shows from Bowie, Leroy Jenkins, Anthony Braxton, Ran Blake, Jaki Byard and the World Sax Quartet. Geez.
