Hi Bodegaphiles!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Gary:

The Dr. of The Jazz!
  7:23pm Dean:

Wow, david w.! I was thinking about "passion" for one reason or another I've now already forgotten during your show. It's neither overrated nor undervalued. It's overused. By marketeers professional and amateur. One must proclaim one's "passion" for [activity] or equate one's "passion" with [activity], as if to interject a note of irrationality to serve as evidence of one's boundless devotion to [activity]. For example, "Cooking is my passion" means something like, "Don't ask me for anything approaching my objective qualifications or experience as a chef, just note that I can't help myself from behaving like one." When, as so often occurs these days, people tout their "passion," I think of Handel's Messiah. I imagine Georg proclaiming, "Writing music is my passion!" He got that right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm doctorjazz:

(Been enjoying the Sunday morning Reggae show in the archives, have to say!)

Yerknow - I don't monitor the AltRight, Fox or Drumpf sputtering & bloviating. So to actual watch & endure some leaves me both edified about their game - & left wondering what I could possibly say about the whole phenomenon that would be appropriate or sum it up or be useful...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Gary:

They all look like weird mutants to me and I can never get past that. Pence doesn't look real, even
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:40pm chresti:

Haha Gary, I've had similar thoughts about Pence.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Jonathan Pie - a Brit comic actor whose conceit is he's a reporter saying what he really thinks after the camera's off - is wonderful. He observed watching Drumpf bloviating
...' It's just stream of consciousness - it's just - words ...it's James Joyce - written in Crayon '...
  7:43pm Dean:

Trump is no James Joyce.

I have a corrective for the reasonable observation that Pence looks unworldly and artificial. Take a look at, say, a $1 bill, that guy in the middle. Or a $5 bill, $100 bill... Who are these people?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Gary:

They're from another time, tho, Dean. Pence purports to be alive and walking around and looking like that in 2020
Avatar 7:45pm LambdaCalculus:

I think Pence may be one of the Pod People.

The most misshapen Clown Shadow of the USA.

Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Haha Doc !!
...think I'll put that link on faceborg !
  7:56pm Dean:

That suggests, Gary, that one should observe certain sartorial or cosmetic norms in 2020. I'm not sure I'd be on board with that, least of all nowadays as I melt into the sofa, unbathed, unshaven, hair uncut and uncombed. Pence seems to me to be just one example of many whose obsessive attention to appearance overshoots the mark. I mean, how many in Washington insist on wearing that stupid lapel pin? It's so tiny, yet so condescending and irritating. Outside D.C. few fall for the patriotism sham.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that OK ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm doctorjazz:

Rev, by all means!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well this is the VP - next in line - says he can't be in a room with a woman not his wife. It's beyond satire. What can you say - ??!?
  8:03pm Dean:

You know, I've always felt the Puritans got a bad rap, not that I can back up the gut feeling, except to note that Perry Miller's treatise on "the New England mind" is within my grasp right now, a fact that doesn't back it up at all. But what I find so disturbing about that Pence story is not that he might in fact genuinely believe or be committed to the stricture. It's that it seems so likely he's faking devotion, cynical.

  8:09pm Dean:

I have no religious sensibilities whatsoever, but I don't think all [name your faith] are just compensating for something else. I'm more likely to assume that of a politician, hence my discomfort with Pence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm doctorjazz:

Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:30pm chresti:

*s,
  8:31pm Dean:

Yes, and I also notice Glenn Greenwald's frequent mockery of our dysfunctional habit of referring to former, long out-of-office mayors/vice presidents/presidents/senators/cabinet members, etc., as the Honorable Senator So-and-So. It's a creepy convention. Respect is due, perhaps, to the office and the incumbent (and obviously that's a debatable proposition), but not necessarily to the former official, who is, last I checked, a mere human being, worthy of no more or less respect than anybody else.

Who does alcoholics better than the Russians? Oh, fun, a game! I'll start. The Mentors?
  8:34pm Ike:

Wow! Russian hip-hop!

I don’t know those video/CD stores but I really like the supermarkets down there like Brighton Bazaar and Tashkent. The steam-table selections are all so interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm northguineahills:

If you fly the St George's Cross flag in England outside a football game, you are probably a supporter of UKIP, and therefore, a rascist and a Xenaphobe (many other examples for other Euro nations).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Gary:

Ike! Yes, the groceries are amazing there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm northguineahills:

Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:40pm chresti:

Speaking of drunks, I was binge watching old game shows from the 70s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Ike:

Plus they have such bizarre soda flavors: tarragon (which is tasty!), pear, and I swear I've seen pine soda as well....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm northguineahills:

this is tight, you should give Billy Jam a sample....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm northguineahills:

I love Brighton Beach for the nice restaurants, and once drunk (and maybe after a toke), the nightclubs that are so over the top ostentatious, they would make our POTUS blush....
  8:46pm peter:

i love that tarragon soda.. and kvass!
Avatar 8:47pm LambdaCalculus:

Kvas is the best!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm northguineahills:

so, chresti says I should chug this bottle of bourbon and watch games shows. Ok, you're the boss!

/I tend to confuse messages....
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:48pm chresti:

mmm...pine and tamarind sound good. Maybe.
  8:49pm Dean:

I was wondering whether she meant either 1) "binge watching" is a species of -holism, or 2) a lot of drunk celebrities showed up in '70s game shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm northguineahills:

I'm going on a wild assumption that Russian hiphoppers wear track suits, and can out-squat anyone else (see slavic squatting).
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm chresti:

The drunk celebrities, hosts, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Ike:

The best restaurant I've tried down there is Nargis. It's Uzbek but Russians love it. For a while there was a branch of it in Park Slope but it closed a year or so ago, even though it seemed like it had plenty of customers. It was gorgeous in a restrained way but didn't have that off-putting sort of Russian ostentatious quality that NGH referred to above. Bummer the Slope one is gone but the original still stands on Coney Island Ave.
  8:56pm Dean:

Hollywood Squares? Match Game? Dating Game? Newlywed Game?
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm chresti:

You name it, Family Feud..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Gary:

I need to check out Nargis. Great Bollywood star, one who the Soviets loved, maybe it was named for her?
  8:59pm Dean:

High school pal of mine was on Dating Game. It's not out of the realm of possibility that his experience was artificially enhanced. A very good friend of mine appeared and won on Jeopardy. No substances there! I was kind of off TV by the time Family Feud was on. I've seen it, but not all that much. Dawson, though, was often a star on Match Game.

Brighton Beach Memoirs--note the title--brings to mind the many times during high school and later when I viewed or participated in productions of Neil Simon shows. I have to admit his work was funny and lively on stage, but I need to revisit it as text. Recently read some O'Neill. Was tough going.
