Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8/4 4:29am Gary:

Are you exasperated by the length and idiocy of the Bodega Pop opening theme? Do you feel safe and comfortable hearing it before each show? Please take our 5-second survey and let us know! www.surveymonkey.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm listener james from westwood:

Indonesia! This very day I proofread a chapter in a college textbook about ethnomusicology that focused on Bali!

Hey Bodega Gary show!

Whoa, lucky you, James! Hi Chresti!

Evening, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Gary:

Welcome, LambdaCalculus!
Avatar 6:58pm LambdaCalculus:

I took the survey, but I did want to mention that I always look forward to the opening because it's the mood setter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Gary:

About 77% of survey participants agree with you so far, LC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm northguineahills:

Any Senyawa tonight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm listener james from westwood:

Counterpoint: Terre T's intro was, or at least felt, 45 minutes long. Yours is like a half a punk song by comparison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Gary:

NGH!
  7:06pm Dean:

I'm agnostic, but it seems to me that one measurable factor independent of listener opinion should carry some weight, namely, how often has the show ended either a little bit overtime or without your being able to play one final track for fear of going overtime? If occasionally, then sure, shorten the theme. If not, what's the harm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Gary:

Dean! I'm usually short on tracks and have to add one or two in at the last minute
  7:09pm Dean:

Well, then, let's have a longer intro theme!
Avatar 7:10pm βrian:

Golly, This Yanti is nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm fred:

I usually listen to archives, and I love hearing the intro
Also, Senyawa was one of the Sonic Protest shows canceled this year. But I had already seen them twice, and even got to chat with Wukir Suryadi once, at a show where he didn't play. Cool guy

Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:26pm chresti:

Indonesian music is already psychedelic to me.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

There's Fine Wine with Downtown Soulville - talks moderate to little amount - wham bam 23 or 24 amazing 45s in an hour. I think that comes from Dance DJ culture.
Gaylord Fields who weaves a cinematic tapestry with the occasional bit of edifying or reflective commentary on a track... It's easy to take for granted how distinct DJ styles are one from another. The Drummer Stream generally feels like back rooms with cushier more lived in furniture...
Avatar 7:30pm LambdaCalculus:

I don't know why for a second, I thought this was Dara Puspita until I flipped back to the playlist to check!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm chresti:

Fine Wine has 1 hour, I think that mostly is the reason for the wham bam.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...so...the Bodega theme establishes the idea of how you acquire musics & your relation to it - & both the diverse street culture quality of it with the 'streets are crazy' part - & then friendliness & humor with the Nellie as contrasting information. This seems canny & effective programming to me...& then we go wherever for hours anyhow.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@chresti yeah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Gary:

Every so often I go down a rabbit hole of Home Improvements for the show, I guess. Spurred on this time by a sound upgrade that I'm not even sure you can hear on your end, since we broadcast out at 128 kpbs
  7:37pm Dean:

Do you have a link to this Sound of Sunda? Would love to learn more about it. Do you know this Nimbus record? https://www.discogs.com/Imas-Permas-Asep-Kosasih-Tembang-Sunda-Sundanese-Classical-Songs/release/13893225

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Gary:

I don't believe I know that one, Dean
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:40pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Part of it yeah. It's great the streams have their own qualities; the Drummer Stream is not the main stream .02 or -1 ...
  7:43pm Dean:

Nimbus has been a treasure trove for classical musics from various parts of the world. That Tembang Sunda record is pretty amazing.

Avatar 8:12pm TDK60:

Guess I don't mind "world music" as you do, Gary. I was in that record store in Portland, forget the name. They were helpful, introduced stuff to me. I think it closed. It was near another good record store, Exiled. Still there, very WFMU-like music.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:13pm chresti:

Yay! We'll be there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Michael 98145:

@TDK60, Music Millennium?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Gary:

Well, when I think of World Music, I think of a particular sort of 1980-90s fusion-y situation? dj /rupture writes about this far more eloquently than I ever could, in his book Uproot
Avatar 8:16pm TDK60:

Michael, no Music Millennium is a bigger general/rock rekkid store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Gary:

Sweet, ARB! Looking forward to that! And, TDK, I just saw that you stepped in -- howdy!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Also my understanding is one application of the term 'World Music' referred to a specific genre style that was a fusion of international musics with Western pop - of some kind... That intent may actually make more sense for the term (...whatever the result).
'International' is weird if it happens to be *your* native music - but it makes a little more sense...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Michael 98145:

@TDK60, ah. I think i remember what you mean -- a store i cannot name, either. Long gone.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ah Gary there you are with specifics Thx.
Avatar 8:19pm TDK60:

I do like some of those '80s fusion-y combos. Ex. Dissidenten half Moroccan/half German players. / Michael it was basically round the corner from Exiled on the south side of Hawthorne.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:20pm chresti:

Maybe Tony Coulter knows about it, TDK60.
Avatar 8:20pm TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Franco Twinkie:

Hi Gary, I'm home now, and plan to get totally wrecked. It's been a tough day. So before I can not type at all I will tell you this: I just got a new mechanic and he is from Indonesia, he calls me by my proper name and like to talk almost as much as I do. When I got in my truck yesterday afternoon, it took off like a rocket. I said to myself This guy knows his shit! I was so happy I went went straight to the Syrian bakery and bought some spinach pies! Okay, I'm going to get loaded now. Rock on bro!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...now @ least I imagine better sound of course - but my speakers are enjoying this for certain !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm melinda:

Hiya!
  8:25pm Dean:

My complaint is precisely with the sloppy but insidious application of a term like "world music" to some vague genre. I marvel, too, that we can't identify the Portland record store, despite the fact that many of us have been to Portland and plumbed its stores, added to which is the fact that internet is the source of all knowledge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Uncle Michael:

I generally prefer 20th and 21st Century Earth music, when it comes to recordings. I can be quite a snob in that way. I tried to get into gas music from Jupiter but it wasn't my cuppa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Gary:

Anybody who says they like Jupiter gas music is lying
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Michael 98145:

i think i have the wine gene, too
  8:34pm Dean:

Is the 21st century music thing a response to yet another dumb article in the NYT? I myself prefer 18th and 12th century musics, but they must be of the world.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm chresti:

Haha *I wonder what Jupiter gas music sounds like*

  8:47pm Dean:

Earlier, "Benjamin Franklin, the only President of the United States who was never President of the United States." That one still kills me.

I checked out their albums from the public library--remember those?!--, but yeah, EYKIW was due to high school buddies sharing FT records their siblings owned.

The Goons @ their most surreal especially? In the other direction - Rev. Stang of SubGenius even says 'Dear Friend's like all the time - which is directly Firesign...
Goon episodes are nearly half an hour - so I found them great for lunch breaks!
  9:03pm Dean:

Influence is such a difficult determination. AI imagines it can resolve it. I'm a doubter, in part because I want the analysis of influence to allow me, a third-party intervenor, to imply (suggest, insist) that an early work is part of a later one in some meaningful sense, even if the "data" (jfc, yawn) suggest otherwise.

Grabbed this on Bandcamp recently - 7 hours of live Firesign from '79-'81, including the Fighting Clowns album. There's a great live show from the Roxy that includes a whole Nick Danger episode that I don't think ever appeared (or got recycled) elsewhere. Well worth the $15. firesigntheatre.bandcamp.com...
  9:07pm Dean:

When was my brain ever the boss?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Franco Twinkie:

My good friend and hash connection is/was The Firesign Theater art director. Many funny stories, but not now. Just got a call - have to do a park scout right now. So much for getting high.

  9:11pm Dean:

Franco, re: your hash connection, corned beef or crypto?
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Firesign have made direct reference to the Goons. Unlike Python - Firesign were mainly Audio - & worked Radio before Albums. It'd be hard to imagine they *weren't* deep into Goons.
The Beatles & Python otoh were of course British & grew up with the BBC & The Goons explicitly. In fact it was a selling point to The Beatles that their Producer George Martin had done The Goons' records ! & then their film Director Richard Lester had worked with them as well.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:12pm chresti:

It's been years since I listened to FT. Loads and loads of 'em.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Uncle Michael:

Would the members of the FT had much access to the Goon Show broadcasts?
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Uncle Michael:

I should share my Blue Moss recipe on Friday. I've been whipping them up all day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Franco Twinkie:

I will just add this before I go: In 1968 my father had the headphones on, took them off and said "Here, I think you'll like this" and handed them to me. It was the FT on KPFK in Los Angeles. I guess I'm a fan too.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I am still here TDK, but getting ready to go. Our friends Rick and Critter want to get together, so I'm going to check out this park near by that has all these goofy cement dinosaurs and sea creatures and see how crowded it gets in the evening.

Ooh - Nasida Ria! Cool! They have some nice videos too. I played some when I was teaching a class on Music and Islam, back in my academic days/daze.
Avatar 9:28pm TDK60:

Ah, I see Franco. / So many different styles here, Gary.

Cement Dinosaurs !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Gary:

I think I found that CD in Amsterdam, Tim -- so wonderful
Avatar 9:34pm TDK60:

The 3rd track back sounded Arab influenced, maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Gary:

Definitely, TDK -- Yemeni
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The two guitar track reminded me of Hamza El Din's oud on the Nile...
Avatar 🇰🇷 9:41pm tim abdellah:

That Nasid style (3rd track) draws consciously from Arab music. "Nashid" in Arabic is a devotional song. The indonesian nasyid style signifies Islamic piety, even if the lyrics are not devotional.
Avatar 🇰🇷 9:42pm tim abdellah:

The gambus style is also very Arab influenced and uses the 'ud - as Gary mentions, an old influence from Yemeni traders/settlers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Gary:

Yes, thank you, Tim, I was conflating qasidah and gambus
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Ike:

You wouldn't think this would be the best music to accompany a sabich sandwich, but somehow, it is.
Avatar 🇰🇷 9:49pm tim abdellah:

@Ike - LOL
@Gary - have you heard the Malaysian Islamic boy bands like Raihan?
Avatar 🇰🇷 9:50pm tim abdellah:

That's probably 15 years ago that that stuff was happening, so I guess they ain't boys any more :D
Avatar 🇰🇷 9:51pm tim abdellah:

Oh dang - their 1st album was from 1996 - they're older than I remember!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Gary:
