Avatar 6:15pm cometothesunshine:

I labored over the single selection today, hour two is so solid, had to put in that extra effort.
  6:15pm DennisK:

Jeez, was there a Macy's in South Bay?
Avatar 6:16pm Matt Clarke:

The effort is much appreciated, Andrew
Avatar 6:16pm cometothesunshine:

Now that I cannot go out and find more 45's, I am confined to the home shopping network.
Avatar 6:16pm StringOFperils:

Hour one isn't too shabby either.
  6:16pm DennisK:

That they drank 7-Up in South Bay is confirmed by numerous Beach Boys studio photos
Avatar 6:16pm Matt Clarke:

I agree String!
  6:17pm DennisK:

Indeed, Matt & String
Avatar 6:17pm cometothesunshine:

I find myself in competition with Orange Peel.
Avatar 6:18pm Matt Clarke:

Competition raises the bar!
Avatar 6:19pm cometothesunshine:

Tell that to Johnny Rivers
Avatar 6:21pm Matt Clarke:

Bringing the beat today! Lovin it
Avatar 6:23pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Matt!

in the topsy-turvey world, nice to have ye olde website.
Avatar 6:31pm Matt Clarke:

Great cover!
Avatar 6:32pm Joe B:

I used to wonder why no one had covered All over the world, and it turns out, someone had!
Avatar 6:33pm cometothesunshine:

Allan Lorber turns in quite a production here.
Avatar 6:34pm cometothesunshine:

This one made it from the UK after many months in the post.
  6:35pm uptownjen:

I had only heard the Tommy James version of this before. Digging this one!
Avatar 6:35pm cometothesunshine:

Me too, Jen!

Avatar 6:42pm Matt Clarke:

Really love those Mortimer 45s
Avatar 6:43pm cometothesunshine:

Me too
Avatar 6:44pm StringOFperils:

Love this single. I think I have it on a comp somewhere...my stuff's a mess.
Avatar 6:46pm StringOFperils:

All I can say is if you think this is the lesser hour of your show, then I can't wait for the rest !
Avatar 6:47pm cometothesunshine:

I am kind of going back through everything I have collected over the past eight or nine years and seeing what hasn't gotten a spin on Come To The Sunshine.
Avatar 6:48pm cometothesunshine:

I keep a big master list and try and come up with new stuff, but obviously my movements have been limited. It is actually nice to catch up.
Avatar 6:49pm Matt Clarke:

Don't worry Andrew. It's good to hear what you present, anytime
Avatar 6:51pm StringOFperils:

I'm a reasonably new listener to WFMU, so over the past 4 months it's been interesting to come up against such serious and dedicated collections/collectors. Really quite an education.
Avatar 6:51pm cometothesunshine:

Each show takes about 24 hours to make and it never gets any easier!
Avatar 6:52pm cometothesunshine:

I learn as I make them too, SOP.
Avatar 6:54pm Joe B:

Dick Dodd channeling Sonny Bono on the verses
Avatar 6:54pm Matt Clarke:

Such a classic
Avatar 6:54pm StringOFperils:

Fun too. Concentrated listening, comparing, sifting, feeling enables the construction of brand new extended pop symphonies. It's awesome.
Avatar 6:54pm cometothesunshine:

with a little Paint It Black
Avatar 6:58pm Matt Clarke:

Iain is such a great singer with Judy and Sandy. Can't wait for this
Avatar 7:00pm cometothesunshine:

He really is. I was disappointed he didn't do the radio ID as Ian MacDonald!
Avatar 7:01pm cometothesunshine:

Super nice guy!
Avatar 7:01pm Matt Clarke:

Wow that last chorus in mono. TUFF!!
Avatar 7:01pm Joe B:

Avatar 7:02pm StringOFperils:

Boy, you can just hear the incredibly hard work that went into producing this end result...every aspect of it. Superlative. Sends chills through me.
Avatar 7:03pm cometothesunshine:

Richard Thompson is an incredible guitarist
Avatar 7:04pm StringOFperils:

Yes. And more. He builds worlds.
Avatar 7:05pm Matt Clarke:

Totally, Andrew. Saw him live in 2008ish. Just amazing to watch
Avatar 7:06pm cometothesunshine:

Full blown Lovin' Spoonful here.
Avatar 7:06pm Matt Clarke:

Nice verb over the mono mixes. The stereo is so dry sounding
  7:06pm Doug in Boston:

Sandy Denny was one of the warmup acts for Randy Newman at Boston Symphony Hall in April, '73. The other warmup was Martin Mull. True! I was there as a high school senior.
Avatar 7:06pm StringOFperils:

Nashville Cats was a giant record.
Avatar 7:07pm Matt Clarke:

Cool, Doug! That must've been a cool show
  7:07pm Doug in Boston:

Mull doing his Blues parody with a ukulele was side-splitting funny.
Avatar 7:08pm Matt Clarke:

Oh yes. Love this cover so much
Avatar 7:08pm StringOFperils:

Blind Lemon Pledge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

Avatar 7:09pm StringOFperils:

I don't have this first one either, thus all my...um...gushing.
Avatar 7:10pm Matt Clarke:

Get this and the BBC sessions comp, Heyday. Worth every penny
Avatar 7:11pm cometothesunshine:

I agree, Matt
Avatar 7:11pm StringOFperils:

@Matt: Noted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

Is BBC sessions on vinyl?
Avatar 7:12pm cometothesunshine:

Will be playing BBC tracks for second half of this spotlight.
Avatar 7:12pm cometothesunshine:

Yes, GGGG. Called Heydey
Avatar 7:13pm Matt Clarke:

@Glynis: Yes. There is a CD issue with more tracks. but the LP is great and has the tracks you'd want anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

thanks guys. We just rarely do the cd thing.
Avatar 7:15pm cometothesunshine:

Love this track: Sun Shade.
  7:16pm CC:

Hi Andrew and all a box full of treasures the box set by Sandy Denny is a good purchase as well!!!
Avatar 7:20pm cometothesunshine:

I have much more to explore.
Avatar 7:25pm Matt Clarke:

Yessss. These BBC sessions are LP worthy. Fantastic performances and song choices.
Avatar 7:28pm Matt Clarke:

Best version of "Tried So Hard" to my ears
Avatar 7:28pm cometothesunshine:

I prefer the original, but this is a great one.
  7:30pm Doug in Boston:

This was a TV studio recording??
Avatar 7:30pm cometothesunshine:

Their vocal blend is so perfect.
  7:30pm Matt Lederman:

Avatar 7:30pm cometothesunshine:

Radio session, Doug.
  7:30pm Doug in Boston:

Sorry, that was what I meant.
Avatar 7:31pm StringOFperils:

Their live recordings, 'off the floor' demonstrate what a great unit they were. No studio construction needed. I have the Live at the Troubadour 1970....but the original/official studio-y stuff is more in keeping with what you do here.
Avatar 7:31pm Matt Clarke:

Agreed, Andrew. Just amazing how their voices worked together.
Avatar 7:32pm Matt Clarke:

@String: Ashley and Martin were a firecracker rhythm section
  7:32pm CC:

I really like Richard Thompson's rendition of 1952 Vincent Black Lightning...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

  7:32pm Doug in Boston:

What a huge improvement in sound over early BBC radio sessions.
  7:32pm uptownjen:

This FC stuff is my favorite of all that I have ever heard, especially these BBC performances.
Avatar 7:33pm cometothesunshine:

Yeah, this was how I got into their music, Jen.
Avatar 7:34pm Matt Clarke:

They had great taste!
Avatar 7:34pm cometothesunshine:

Their is a "studio" take of this one, but I prefer the radio session.
Avatar 7:34pm Matt Clarke:

Agreed, Andrew!
Avatar 7:36pm cometothesunshine:

They could've been the greatest UK country-rock band if they hadn't shifted styles so quickly.
Avatar 7:37pm Matt Clarke:

Totally. They had all the ingredients to make it work fantastically.
Avatar 7:39pm Matt Clarke:

Love this one. Cool production
Avatar 7:40pm cometothesunshine:

me too.
Avatar 7:42pm Matt Clarke:

They totally transfer Joni tunes into their own thing. Brilliant.
Avatar 7:43pm cometothesunshine:

They definitely transport them
Avatar 7:43pm StringOFperils:

And 19th century jigs and country dances just barely contained beneath the rock veneer. Fascinating stuff.
Avatar 7:43pm cometothesunshine:

Ian's vocals are great on all of these.
  7:44pm CC:

I wonder if Joni and Sandy ever sat down and had an in-depth conversation???
Avatar 7:44pm Matt Clarke:

Totally, Andrew. Thank you for playing these great tunes.
Avatar 7:45pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Matt. My pleasure as always.
  7:46pm Doug in Boston:

I'm knocked out by the early Fairport. Another ear-opening installment of CTTS.
Avatar 7:48pm cometothesunshine:

I am so glad, Doug. That is why I am here. So happy when it all works out.
Avatar 7:48pm Matt Clarke:

This cover is just over the top beautiful
Avatar 7:49pm cometothesunshine:

Probably the best of many versions, in my opinion.
Avatar 7:49pm Matt Clarke:

Definitely agree
Avatar 7:49pm cometothesunshine:

The interchange of male/female vocals really elevates it.
  7:51pm CC:

I like this better than Leonard's version!!!
Avatar 7:51pm cometothesunshine:

me too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:
