For a Finn like me, it was interesting that Philippe DeBarge /The Pretty Things release had a Finnish connection. A guy called Jorma Saarkangas had the acetate and it was transferred at YLE (finnish broadcasting company) studios by the legendary Pekka Gronow. I learned this only a few days ago as I don't have the record - now I gotta do something about that...

@6:30 cometothesunshine: you guys rule! This episode needs repeat listens!
  6:33pm
Doug in Boston:

Funny think about Norman "Hurricane" Smith was how he later said the psychedelic stuff didn't make any sense to him. Almost a put-down of his own fantastic work. His recording of "Oh Babe What Would You Say?" was a real throwback of the sort that I would guess Paul McCartney appreciated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I'm ashamed I don't know more about them but glad to have to chance here. Thanks.

Sweet Corn Lizzie - you are in for a real treat. Amazing band!

@6:33 Doug in Boston: heh! Reminds me how he apparently had an uneasy working relationship with Syd Barrett.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm
Matt Clarke:

@coel: Either Twink or Skip Alan. I missed the callout.
Avatar 6:34pm
cometothesunshine:

I think Norman was very psychedelic, whether he knew it or not

coelacanth∅:

i like the horns on photographer, even if they hated them!
i do hate them on progress though.
Avatar 6:40pm
cometothesunshine:

I don't hate the brass - the mix on Progress is really a mess. I did a lot of work on that for this show to fix it up a bit.
Avatar 6:41pm
Debbie D.:

Sounds great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
coelacanth∅:

this alternate mix is excellent though!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
Matt Clarke:

What studio was Emotions tracked in?
Avatar 6:42pm
cometothesunshine:

Guessing the Philips studio?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

@6:39 cometothesunshine: exactly. I am just very jealous I can't afford that one. It is easily in my Pretty Things top 5, and mono mixes of 60s stuff are more reasonably made, and often (like in the case of Beatles, Pink Floyd etc.) involved the performers' artistic input.
Avatar 6:42pm
cometothesunshine:

I never knew this 45 was a different mix till I did a comparison with the album.
  6:42pm

May is such an underrated lyricist. He is up there with the greats imho.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm

Doug in Boston:

"Children" almost sounded like it might morph into something like "Green Manalishi."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
coelacanth∅:

...not that the later guitarists were shabby!
Avatar 6:45pm
cometothesunshine:

My Time is such an amazing performance. As tough as their early R&B 45s, I feel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

@6:45 coelacanth∅: the 70s stuff is still good. Different, but when did The Pretty Things NOT change? Every new album brought new cards to the table.
Avatar 6:47pm
cometothesunshine:

Brian and Dick were so solid! It allowed the drummers to be more freewheeling
  6:49pm
Synodicat:

I adore this song so much. Co-written by Normal Smith.
Avatar 6:49pm

You hear the genius of Norman Smith as a writer on this song - plus Wally and Jon being Beach Boy nuts.

Love the electric harpsichord on In The Square
Avatar 6:57pm
cometothesunshine:

Yeah, the Baldwin has such a different tonality to the acoustic harpsichord
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm

post-SMiLE! Beach Boys is also underrated (well, at least WAS at the time) but this (Parachute) is almost better.

I have both upstairs from me right now - Baldwin electric and single-manual acoustic.

The Pretty Things have always been a challenging subject to me kinda like what u were saying about the Parachute album, Andrew. Reminds me of Brandford Marsalis on the topic of Picasso of all things. Ha! He said with Picasso , for him, you have to go to it. Meet the subject on its own terms .

Basically, the levels are really off so it can get louder later. They kinda needed to figure out editing or using and adjusting a limiter

I DJ-d a Wanda Jackson show & decided to play a lot of her own material & found great nuggets in the tons of Wanda LPs I had. I'd previously been dissapointed by a lot of her albums but found SO much great stuff hiding in there. The ppl putting on the show told me to stop playing her material so it was more of a personal journey than anything else.
