Loving the set!!!
Avatar 7:29pm hyde:

I confess to being at least slightly disappointed that this show is not just three hours of Ratt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Gary:

I'm MORE than a little disappointed!
7:36pm Dave in St Albans UK:

Wonderful sounds. Thanks Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Gary:

Hi Dave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm WR:

Listening while busy with cooking and sorting recycle garbage. So you are all saved from my well intentioned but random observations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Gary:

I am thinking about putting together a Bodega Pop Meet Up in the next month or so. It would involve a trip to Nouri Brothers in Paterson, NJ, and then grabbing lunch at this Turkish pide place down the street. We'd ride together on the bus or train from NYC. Or folks in NJ could meet us there. DOES THIS SOUND OF INTEREST? Ima put a surveymonkey out about it soon and take your temp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Gary:

WR!
Avatar 7:42pm hyde:

whoa dang, that sounds cool. too far for me!
Avatar 7:45pm hyde:

have you ever gone to Istanbul Food Bazaar in Paterson? i've seen that place talked up on the NJ board of a food site i frequent (Hungry Onion)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Gary:

Wait, what? OMG, I gotta go there!
  7:47pm passiflora:

:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Gary:

Passiflora!
Avatar 7:50pm LambdaCalculus:

Gary, I'd be down for a Bodega Pop meetup! I can just hop on the train and go right up to Nouri Brothers, no prob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm melinda:

Dig the bed music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm melinda:

Wish I was in the NYC/Jersey area so I could take part in a meetup.
Avatar 7:55pm hyde:

hmmm, i may have been misremembering. seems like Istanbul Food Bazaar is in Clifton.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm WR:

I am interested, depending on work schedule, often have irregular work schedule but will be taking time off the last two weeks of February to do stuff around the house so very flexible those weeks.
Avatar 7:59pm hyde:

wow, i am so far behind on Zhang Yimou movies. i don't know if i've seen one since House of Flying Daggers. that was 2004!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm coelacanth∅:

hey Gary and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Gary:

Coela-C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Gary:

Will definitely do the trip to Nouri on a weekend
Avatar 8:01pm hyde:

i also had forgotten he directed that Great Wall movie with Matt Damon that everyone freaked out about being Hollywood whitewashing even though though pretty much all the money that made it (and hence called the shots) came from China
Avatar 8:03pm hyde:

(though it also still sounded terrible)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Gary:

I didn't see that one--do you know what it's about?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm melinda:

Gary have you seen the Youtube channel My Analog Journal? It popped up in my suggested videos recently with some great Turkish 70s music, but he does other genres as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Gary:

I have not, Melinda! Post a link, please, I'd love to check it out
Avatar 8:08pm hyde:

@Gary i think it's just a big Song dynasty war epic. Matt Damon and Willem Dafoe are european mercenaries of some sort. Andy Lau is in it too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Gary:

Andy Lau! Have you seen Infernal Affairs?
Avatar 8:12pm hyde:

yeah, i love Infernal Affairs
  8:14pm rw:

Quite a left turn there.
Avatar 8:14pm hyde:

i also now want to watch God of Gamblers again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Gary:

RW! Observe the swerve
Avatar 8:16pm LambdaCalculus:

That's a hell of a swerve!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Gary:

This is the part where the characters descend into Hell
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

....I imagine making the epic sojourn from small-town NewHampshuh to break bread & lift glass in New Jersey for an hour
...arriving in a state like the Monty Python 'It's!' man...
Avatar 8:19pm LambdaCalculus:

This is what is playing in Diyu... the Chinese afterlife.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm ParUbi:

I love this guy! I spent a lot of time a couple of years ago trying to discover experimental music at the chinese music site, Xiami. Found his work there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wow. Amazing track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm ParUbi:

I should leave this kind of project to the professionals, though.

For the record I have no objections to sudden swerving.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Gary:

TDK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm doctorjazz:

No complaints on my end (just a wisecracks comment).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Gary:

Now that I've thrown all of you fine young people under the bus, allow me to exhort you to stick around after this show for Sam Segal's super-thrill-packed "If You Lose Your Horse," a radio show that sounds like it's going to be about cowboys, but somehow rarely is. It is, however, always awesome. Tonight's episode? "Reduce the Horse to a Symbol." Gather ye at 10 PM sharply, here: wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:31pm TDK60:

..that pipa piece by Li Guangzu shreds.
  9:32pm ?:

wonderful show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm doctorjazz:

Gotta run, thanks, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Gary:

Night, DrJ! And welcome, "?" !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Gary:

@TDK: I think that piece might be fairly well-known? Anyway, I've seen a few different recordings of it by different artists
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Gary:

Maybe it's kind of like a flight of the bumblebee situation -- something you learn to play if you're serious about your chops ... at least, that's what I wanna believe!
Avatar 9:40pm JakeGould:

Hey again. Been listening and enjoying the ambiance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm chresti:

I could listen to pipa all day.
Avatar 9:48pm still b/p:

That'd be pipa long-stalking.
Avatar 9:49pm TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Gary:

Gary! Been here the last 30 minutes or so. Killer show tonight from what I've heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Sam Segal:

Haha, did not mean to post that twice. But, as you can see, I've found the show both killer and beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Gary:

Sam!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm WR:

I'm particularly a fan of the double reed trumpet. The shenai or other name it goes be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm WR:

This player on Si Shang Xiang was more melodic that many.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm WR:

...than many that I've heard.
Avatar 9:57pm still b/p:

Only Chinese tracks I've got -- just a couple or three -- I transferred to cassette from vinyl of folk-music in a listening booth at the library 30 years ago. A couple of Himalayan region numbers, too.I believe tape is still playable.
Avatar 9:58pm LambdaCalculus:

I've got some Faye Wong, some C-Pop album I picked up in Chinatown ages ago, a folk music album, and one Lily Chao album I got on Bandcamp.
