One would call the phone number and listen to the stories that others had left on the machine. It was not a 900 service, so if you were outside of the Boston area you had to pay for long distance phone charges. There was no advertising, the 'message changed every day,' and was made up of what callers called in. It was active for a number of years in the early-mid 1990s. The motto was "Inspiration is only a phone call away" and Raye called it free public media and added "Would you like fries with your art?"

Hi Otis! Next week, we're neighbours in time and waves.
Avatar 2:03pm fred:

@Jan: Who's moving?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Otis Fodder:

Looking forward to next week! Another new show on Sunday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Jan Turkenburg:

Fred, I will be starting two new shows as of next week, one of which is the hour before FP, 78 rpm only
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Factsheet 5! A classic! Hi, everyone!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Alina Brennaman:

Sunday History Class with Otis, making Sunday School enjoyable!
Avatar 2:11pm fred:

@Jan: That sounds great! I love these old records. Though I'm conflicted about next week: The Ex and 75 Dollar Bill are playing, and I'd love to be there (especially for $75 bill, I've seen The Ex so much). Then again, I support the transit strike. Not convenient for me, but convenient and good are different things
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Alina, hi GST!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Otis Fodder:

Smashing someones face with a lunchbox is cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Otis Fodder:

I'm hiding my WFMU lunchbox if that guy comes over!
Avatar 2:50pm Martinibomb:

You went to stripparaoke! Invented by a local Portland srtip club. Another fantastic Oregon export
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm spodiodi:

if you peel the decal off the WFMU lunchbox, it reveals the original design/brand
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm spodiodi:

did you get to strip? that sounds fun
Avatar 2:51pm Martinibomb:

@Otis did you do any songs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Otis Fodder:

That's awesome, straight outta Portland! Was fun. Top songs for me last night: Super Freak, TLC's Waterfalls, Darling Nikki... and Biz's Just a Friend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Otis Fodder:

No songs here, just took off my shirt dancing on stage. Next time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm spodiodi:

i hope they did Biz justice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Linda Lee:

'super freak' was my theme song when i was an actual stripper! didn't sing though. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Otis Fodder:

Actually yes, they did. Hey spodiodi! Good MC and 2 others doing the singing.
Avatar 2:53pm Martinibomb:

That's interesting that you do a couple songs by female artists. I'll pull out Madonna's Borderline sometimes and folks always think that's interesting in a baritone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm spodiodi:

hi Otis! (all!) sweet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Otis Fodder:

Awesome, great song too, early Madonna.
Avatar 2:57pm Martinibomb:

I've been working on a cover of jimmy walkers "swamp country" which is what I'm doing right now while listening.. I have it all worked out .. just haven't figured out an interesting angle on it yet tho.. if ya know what I mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Rich in Washington:

I do a mean Ethyl Merman impression.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Rich in Washington:

which I am reasonably certain I can tweak into an acceptable Mrs. Miller impression.
Avatar 2:59pm Martinibomb:

I think the hard part of doing art/music or whatever is working thru that part where the thing feels like a piece of shit - hahhah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Linda Lee:

you bet! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Jan Turkenburg:

Just gor a message that Radio Focus will test relaying the SJR stream after the news of the hour. THAT will be fun :-)
Avatar 3:02pm Martinibomb:

Nice! Love the radio crossover @Jan

3:04pm Dave In St Albans UK:

Microcassette? Must dig out my desktop Sony microcassette machine. Complete with big analog VU meters! I used to wander around London recording street and park musicians with the portable recorder. No commentary though. Love these audio diaries. Btw hi Otis and everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Otis Fodder:

That's so great Jan, stretchin' out!!
Avatar 3:06pm Martinibomb:

Bone! Cool I like this person
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Otis Fodder:

Hi Dave, if you ever want to share them, love to play bits.
3:10pm Dave In St Albans UK:

Hi Otis. A journey into my attic is all that's needed. The question is .... which box? ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Jan Turkenburg:

Test succeeded! Radio Focus is now set to forward SJR wednesday 1-2 pm EST (7-8 pm local time)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Rich in Washington:

That's cool, Jan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Alina Brennaman:

awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Linda Lee:

wow! fabulous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Linda Lee:

i miss train travel. changing landscape, casual talk. nowhere to go, nothing to do, all the while moving. it's good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Otis Fodder:

So good. Hope to take a trip by train again soon... but for sure I'll be taking Amtrak from Montreal down for the WFMU Rec Fair in April... wow it's the future... almost 2020!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Linda Lee:

wow! :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Linda Lee:

right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Otis Fodder:

At least it's 2020... and not 1010.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Linda Lee:

I think 1010 would be lovely, under some circumstances. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Otis Fodder:

Depending on the part of the world we are in and the dogma attached.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Linda Lee:

yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Otis Fodder:

In 1010, with the average life span, I now would have been dust 20 years back. But those first 30 years, were nice.
Avatar 3:35pm fred:

My eyesight, hearing, and heart are so bad I wouldn't enjoy the 1010 years for long
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Linda Lee:

I'll venture saying I'd take 30 years in paradise against 80 in purgatory :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm ParUbi:

Hi guys!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Otis Fodder:

Hi ParUbi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Linda Lee:

hi hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Otis Fodder:

Linda, I'll get on fixing this Purgatory room up, some nice curtains and appetizers should do it. Skylight. Porch. On it!
Avatar 3:40pm fred:

If your sadistic god is real, I'll spend as much time in pain as amuses him. Still beats worshiping the asshole
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Linda Lee:

sharing the room with you counts for a lot, Otis. :-D
as for a sadistic ancient god, I'd take earth spirit & no atom bomb, thanks. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Linda Lee:

no one on this board has ever experienced life without the threat of total annihilation present. I'd really like experiencing a different reality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Otis Fodder:

Hugs and smiles Linda (and all). Let me refill all your water glasses with lemon wedges.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Linda Lee:

OK! :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Otis Fodder:

Feel like playing Janis Ian Society's Child right about now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Alina Brennaman:

I'm in full agreement with you Linda Lee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Linda Lee:

ask the dj about that. :-)
thank you Alina!
Avatar 3:49pm fred:

@Linda Lee: True, but many of us (myself included) enjoyed the spoils. It seems a little bit late in the game to complain
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Linda Lee:

sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Otis Fodder:

I am very very seriously thankful for coffee right now. Grind those beans, french press, stovetop. Bliss. Amen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Linda Lee:

Otis, I quit coffee when I quit smoking. about 10 years ago now. you tempt me to try it again.
  3:52pm Xoomer:

I worked for WaffleHouses 13 years -/+
Avatar 3:53pm fred:

Guinness is the closest proof I've tasted that there is good in this world (Islay is another thing altogether)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Otis Fodder:

Hi Xoomer. I remember there was a Waffle House music too. CDs. Gotta look that up post-show. I remember hearing Waffle House songs on WFMU years back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm chresti:

Hi Otis and persuaders that are friendly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Otis Fodder:

Hi chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm chresti:

Hail coffee!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Otis Fodder:

Look at those bums! :)
Avatar 4:04pm Martinibomb:

Bummies, bummies everywhere, lil bummies they don't work!
Avatar 4:06pm Martinibomb:

Any thoughts about streaming while DJn on something like Instagram, Youtube, Twitch etc... ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Otis Fodder:

As in, playing YT vids, two browsers sort of mixing?
Avatar 4:09pm Martinibomb:

No I mean Sheena's DJs streaming live video while broadcasting? It's something that's been on my mind. I have to do it more for my art stuff in the future anyway...
Avatar 4:09pm Martinibomb:

sort of the way the world is now too. everyone streaming video etc..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Otis Fodder:

That would be fun to listen/watch. Looking forward to dropping into your show if you do it.
Avatar 4:11pm Martinibomb:

how does the idea of streaming video of yourself feel to you? I'm a little creeped out by it but trying to get over it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Linda Lee:

does it have to be you, MB?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Linda Lee:

what about just organizing visual accompaniment to what you play?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Otis Fodder:

Maybe in time, sure. I'm on the webcam for business stuff on the daily, so taking it to radio would be fun.
Avatar 4:12pm Martinibomb:

for my painting stuff I have to stream video of myself showing my process etc..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Linda Lee:

aha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Linda Lee:

I see that being interesting, but video of dis playing music? mmmeh!
Avatar 4:14pm Martinibomb:

doing radio stuff has been helping me get over my shyness so I am feeling more confident putting myself out there like that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Otis Fodder:

It was be very very boring watching me cue up records and tapes. However, you would get to see Bunjee and we'd play with his toys and tunnel, maybe give him some treats. Live video with guests I could see totally on occasion or if there was an interesting enough show/theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Linda Lee:

that's the deal. it has to be fun to look at too.
Avatar 4:15pm fred:

It only works if you want it to be live. It's all your call. If some stuff takes more time, don't feel bound to stream the process. But if instant creation is part of a particular piece, by all means go for it. Also, if the process is important, go for it. Your call is what matters
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Otis Fodder:

Got me thinking now... for live video on occasion.
Avatar 4:15pm Martinibomb:

I wonder if a POV video stream of a d would be fun then you'd see it from our view? hah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Linda Lee:

that would be fun!
  4:17pm ?:

sounds fun to me
  4:17pm spodiodi:

whoops ^ that was my sounds fun to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Otis Fodder:

It would be cool to see the media being pulled out, like vinyl and stuff. Hold up album covers to go with tracks being played and running about the room grabbing stuff.
Avatar 4:21pm fred:

Also, it's OK to try and fail. Trying and failing is how good things happen. So, try whatever sounds good
Avatar 4:21pm Martinibomb:

@fred I feel like social media makes you make stuff fast. Putting something that took you months to make doesn't exactly work and plus u can get ripped off pretty ez. That feels bad if you put a bunch of time into something. So the whole thing leans toward work that is fast to make. I don't know how to solve these problems yet...
  4:22pm spodiodi:

of when in the tenderloin is this guy speaking? i didn't make it out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Otis Fodder:

Recorded in December, 2005. He was in the tenderloin in 2000.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Otis Fodder:

...I think I caught 2000, but to be sure would have to listen back.
  4:25pm spodiodi:

thanks, Otis
Avatar 4:31pm Martinibomb:

This is a cool story I bet people I know went on a tour with this guy.
Avatar 4:32pm Martinibomb:

Good chance you've met someone who went on this fella tour as well Otis
Avatar 4:32pm Mr Fab:

hey, all! MB, live video could be interesting, if some imagination is applied. There have been people live streaming their (mainly talk/political-type) shows for years, and i don't really see the point. Of course, i don't really see the point in political talk shows in general! But any new technology has potential, if clever people are involved.
Avatar 4:33pm Martinibomb:

@Fab it's a marketing tool plain and simple
Avatar 4:34pm fred:

@Martinibomb: Don't invest more than social media will give you, which is very little. Be there, but you don't need to spend much energy to do so, so don't. Do your own stuff instead. Feed the gram with throwaway things, but keep an eye on it, some might turn out better than you thought. Keep at what you feel is right, that's what matters, at least to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm strangegait:

belated hello everyone. just got in. glad to catch a little otis.
Avatar 4:38pm Martinibomb:

@Fred I will say on the upside the idea of being able to sell directly to the end client and bypassing galleries... (which I sometimes think contribute to gentrification?) - appeals to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Otis Fodder:

@Fred, concerning social media. 100% spot on.
  4:41pm spodiodi:

"you too"
Avatar 4:41pm Martinibomb:

I think with radio tho.. I kind of like that it's in my head sometimes and not a video. If that makes sense? Watching Otis listen to this album? That's not exactly compelling
  4:42pm spodiodi:

<3
Avatar 4:43pm fred:

@Martinibomb: Totally agree about the hard issue of gentrification. But if do it right, it's not your issue. Seriously, it's not, it you're about your art and not about some investment. Only you knows, but I think you're on the right side
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Otis Fodder:

MB - That would be boring watching me right now for 4 hours. With guests over again, those shows would be fun to watch with 2-4 others over (+ often others came over and just hang on those past shows too).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Linda Lee:

tho' watching Bunjee for 4 hours .. well ..
Avatar 4:46pm Martinibomb:

My current POV has just changed to this. Social Meida/Streaming etc.. It's really great for short form/fast/Marketing etc.. Something like a 3 or 4hr DJ set - honestly that's boring. And does not work except on occasion. So there ya go.. maybe I'll do a video stream when I have guests over and things are interesting visually. A+ thanks everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Otis Fodder:

The Bunjee show would be the best thing ever. Hands down. Have someone come over and follow Bunjee for the 4 hours. 3 hours and 45 minutes each show will just be the Bunjee Sleepycam.
Avatar 4:49pm Martinibomb:

I think you can get wifi cameras for cats?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Linda Lee:

ho!
do they still sell those wearable kitty cams? (not always comfy, though, I'm sure.)
Avatar 4:50pm Martinibomb:

I have a sad story. My friend's dog died a couple days ago and his other dog was really sad. That dog just died in his sleep. Less that a week apart! Sad story of the day .. sorry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Linda Lee:

we still might wind up looking at Otis mostly. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Linda Lee:

I'm sorry to hear that, MB. animals feel & love deeply. that's for sure.
  4:52pm spodiodi:

that is pretty sad, Martinibomb
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Otis Fodder:

So sad. Stories of a partner passing when another dies. Can't live without another. Sad, but also precious.
Avatar 4:54pm Martinibomb:

My friend was saying to me all week that, "Butters" was really sad (he's a chihuahua) - He passed away in his sleep last night was only 10yrs old??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Linda Lee:

hearts do break.
Avatar 4:55pm Martinibomb:

My chihuahua is turning 16yrs old pretty soon. Those little guys really get into your heart.
Avatar 4:59pm Martinibomb:

Don't start smokin' pot - gate way drug yo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm spodiodi:

Avatar 5:05pm Martinibomb:

"Hah Hah you picked the wrong religion, sorry asshole." -- omfg that would make a great comic book
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm spodiodi:

reminds me of some family
Avatar 5:07pm Martinibomb:

I'd like a Neil Gaiman story about this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Otis Fodder:

Poor boys... life is soooo hard.
Avatar 5:09pm Martinibomb:

Maybe if you die you experience it all? Even being bones disintegrating in the earth? And then right at that moment the cast of Monty Python shows up and it turns out you were just a Terry Giliam animation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Linda Lee:

ahahaha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Otis Fodder:

Shhhh, don't reveal the secret knowledge here!!!

Avatar 5:13pm Martinibomb:

Anybody here a fan of Steve Jackson games? :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Linda Lee:

that was surreal. in the middle of all this verbal nonsense comes Hassan I Sabbah!
Avatar 5:15pm Martinibomb:

old molds? I think there is a cleaner for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm spodiodi:

the old patterns don't fit anymore!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm spodiodi:

Avatar 5:16pm fred:

@Martinibomb: Steve Jackson Games is how I got Principia Discordia
Avatar 5:16pm Martinibomb:

Sounds like everyone here has read The Illuminatus!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Linda Lee:

da wha?
Avatar 5:20pm fred:

The Illuminatus compared to Discordia is like Russell to Wittgenstein. To me, I'm insane, I know
Avatar 5:20pm Martinibomb:

@Linda it's a pretty funny conspiracy/scifi novel not sure how to explain it.. suspect u would love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Linda Lee:

always like a recommend! thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Linda Lee:

Otis dear, we do need a video of Bungee for the Magma.
Avatar 5:21pm Martinibomb:

it kind of shits on religion and cults except that by being into the novel you're kinda being sucked into this cult like 60s subculture thinking.. it's hilarious and alarming
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Linda Lee:

wonderful! good things come from hilarious & alarming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Otis Fodder:

Here too Fred, my copy of Principia is the Steve Jackson version (which I think is really the best).
Avatar 5:23pm fred:

@Linda Lee: Do read the Principia Discordia (before or after, time doesn't matter)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Linda Lee:

very good. i like that. thanks Fred!
Avatar 5:24pm Martinibomb:

^agree with Fred
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Otis Fodder:

I feel Bunjee loves Magma. I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Linda Lee:

I'm having fun imagining the Bunjee visuals now. sitting .. staring at something on the ceiling .. yawning .. sleeping.
Avatar 5:25pm Martinibomb:

I like Magma but I never listen to em.. always thankful for friends who play me Magma songs as I really do enjoy them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Linda Lee:

I'm liking this a lot. perfect for a very dark & silent december night in the woods.

I was a casual listener to Magma for years and fell in deep about 5 years ago. Listening in close and always morphing/changing. Really love and appreciate Magma.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Linda Lee:

beautiful sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Linda Lee:

'course some of us have to listen to the vocal as if it's an instrument. the sound. but it's ok so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Otis Fodder:

Linda, dark and overcast here, really goes well. Lights dimmed, windows open.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Linda Lee:

"You hold in your hands one of the Great Books of our century fnord.
Some Great Books are recognized at once with a fusillade of critical
huzzahs and gonfolons, like Joyce’s Ulysses. Others appear almost furtively
and are only discovered 50 years later, like Moby Dick or Mendel’s great
essay on genetics. The Principia Discordia entered our space-time
continuum almost as unobtrusively as a cat-burglar creeping over a
windowsill."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Linda Lee:

oh boy. just had a peek. could be fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Linda Lee:

'course we already known what they did to the goddess when they found her, but there could be more to the story..
Avatar 5:32pm Martinibomb:

That brief quote should tell you all u need to know about the tone of the book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Linda Lee:

we already known! :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Linda Lee:

the way power dynamics play out in dedicated groups .. as shown .. quite amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Linda Lee:

how easily it tips into fascism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Otis Fodder:

Oh, 'Wild Wild Country'. That was a good doc, the music in it as well. Very well done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Linda Lee:

we're getting pretty adept at teasing out an agenda in the media we're looking at down here in Dizzyland.
at least I hope so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Linda Lee:

I didn't catch one there.
Avatar 5:48pm fred:

@Linda Lee: How did I get branded as a fascist? You get that power, I must bow to it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Linda Lee:

who, you? you're no fascist, are you?
Avatar 5:49pm fred:

You tell me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Linda Lee:

nah. i don't think it's possible for one person alone to be fascistic.
Avatar 5:53pm fred:

Makes sense, fascits need crowrds, I'm uneasy with these
