Options November 15, 2019: The Flange & Frigate #055 - Some Other Guys

There were, of course, more than four people born in Liverpool who started a popular beat combo in those halcyon days of the Sixties, and on today's Flange & Frigate with DJ GeorgyGirl we celebrate them and the Scouse city by the sea. Featuring artists like The Searchers, The Merseys, The Swinging Blue Jeans, Tommy Quickly, Gerry & The Pacemakers, and more! Oh - and we do talk about the other OTHER guys as well. Be rude not to.

4 pm to 6 pm (EST)/9 pm to 11 pm (GMT)

Time to get yer Scouse in in just over five minutes! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Here we go! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Linda Lee:

hello! Scouse?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Jan Turkenburg:

Yes Merseybeat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi Linda! Hi Jan! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Scouse or Scouser is the nickname for people from Liverpool :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

And also their accent ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm chresti:

Hi GG and peeps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Linda Lee:

aha! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi chresti! :-)
Avatar 4:06pm Mr Fab:

Hey GG! Kicking things off with a Bo Diddley cover makes me happy. Question: isn't 'scouse' referring to Manchester?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi Mr Fab! Manchester is Mancunian :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

If you called someone from Manchester a Scouser they might kick you! You wouldn't want that! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Linda Lee:

is 'tip of my tongue' not loaded with 'i saw her standing there'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

There's always tons of extra police when Liverpool play Manchester United at football - not a lot of love between the two cities!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda - there's quite a lot of Beatley bits ;-)
Avatar 4:12pm Mr Fab:

Ha, got it. "Randy Scouse Git," on of my fave Monkees songs, has nothing to do with Liverpool, near as I can tell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Linda Lee:

what year was the Tommy Quickly? i'm guessing it was first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Linda Lee:

i hear Paul's shoutin' vocal in this "Bony Moronie' too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Mr Fab - yep, it dies :-) There was a show called "Til Death Us Do Part" - "All in the Family" was the US take on it. And the son-in-law was a Liverpudlian, so the dad character used to call him a "randy scouse git". Mickey Dolenz thought it sounded cool ... which is why they ended up calling it "Alternate Title" ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Interestingly - the actor who played the son-in-law was Prime Minister Tony Blair's father in law in real life! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

DOES not dies!!!! Can't type this evening ;-)
Avatar 4:14pm Franco Twinkie:

Georgie! I was sitting in the kitchen drawing a monster face, but I don't know if that's gonna work now that your on. Computer is in the living room, so now I am as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Linda Lee:

it's great to hear the sound that bred the beatles! they didn't really just fall out of the moon the way it appeared to the americans!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi Franco! :-)
Avatar 4:17pm recordrouletteclub:

Sounding great GEORGY!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hey Danny!! :-)
Avatar 4:18pm recordrouletteclub:

Why, hello!!
Avatar 4:19pm Franco Twinkie:

Over here in the 60's, everyone used Castrol in their dirt bikes.
Avatar 4:19pm Mr Fab:

Linda, I heard (and maybe GG can confirm this) that Liverpudlians were hipper then Londoners thanks to an American military presence that brought all the new records to the scousers before even those snobs down south could get 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Castrol was HUGE back in the day. Are they still a company?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Mr Fab - I get to that later on in the show ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Linda Lee:

they are, GG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda - aha! I always remember the ads back in the day :-)
Avatar 4:22pm Franco Twinkie:

Still around. Red, white and green - black lettering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

That kind of slanted lettering. Wonderful. I do love a good font face :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Linda Lee:

was there anywhere really safe from the US miiltary presence? it does seem that the good stuff spread around awfully fast.
the rollin' stones covered 'fortune teller'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

The Fortune Teller - also a big track for The 'oo :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Linda Lee:

what i did here in the Dominos' 'fortune teller' is how very much Brian brought to the band. it's almost incalculable.
Avatar 4:27pm recordrouletteclub:

Wow! This "Lies" track is great!! Never heard this one..Thanks GG!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I trust you're all in Cuban heels today? ;-)
Avatar 4:27pm Mr Fab:

I forget where Brian Eno grew up, but he says that the nearby US base's radio station was very influential to his upbringing. Lotsa stuff he didn't hear on the BBC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Merseybeat, Tiki, Exotica, Lounge .... all traced back to the forces moving around the globe!
Avatar 4:29pm Mr Fab:

i do in fact have a super snazzy pair of cuban heels aka beatle boots! Mrs Fab got 'em for me for christmas couple years ago. Love 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Mr Fab - perfect!!! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Linda Lee:

what a beautiful, beautiful thing.
i wore my last pair of beatle boots in the 70s, alas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I do think that a chap looks rather good in a slight heel, I have to say. Straightens the back :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Linda Lee:

pushes the butt out too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Linda Lee:

let's face it. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

There's that, too! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Same thing with cowboy boots! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Linda Lee:

gosh, isn't it true! :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Linda Lee:

i like the overall mod look a bit more, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Ironically, this Newtowns song sounds like The Byrds - who, of course wanted to sound like The Beatles ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Linda Lee:

yes, it does! really true!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think Mod style was a definite watershed moment for male British fashion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Linda Lee:

& then world fashion, i'd say. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Except I don't actually talk about skiffle in a little bit because I forgot ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

The picture I posted on the Sheena Facebook group a while ago of me on the stairs of The Cavern was taken about a minute after I stopped crying. lol.
Avatar 4:39pm Franco Twinkie:

I love these commercials for British products. When my sister and I saw Ferry Cross The Mersey in 1965, we were fasinated by the breakfast cereal Gerry Marsden was eating in his gloomy grey kitchen.
Avatar 4:39pm Martinibomb:

The day is going by to fast aaaa slow down day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Linda Lee:

was 'wonderful one' Motown first?
Avatar 4:40pm Martinibomb:

can't believe your 40min into your show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Linda Lee:

i think i missed that pic, GG! i'll have to go look.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Franco - the one thing I didn't do in Liverpool was go on the ferry because I have NO sea legs :-)
@MB - it flies by!
@Linda - I don't know! Probably :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Linda Lee:

GG's shows always just fly. it's phenomenal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Linda Lee:

did a quick check. yes, Marvin Gaye! 64!
Avatar 4:42pm Martinibomb:

I think Crate digger is 2hrs now right? I have 30min picked but what to play for the last 90 I do not know...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Linda Lee:

have we actually moved to 2 hours yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda - www.facebook.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Linda Lee:

oh! that's beautiful!!! no, hadn't seen it! fabulous. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Every single Liverpool photo of me is either just before or just after I was crying. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Linda Lee:

sure, of course! it's about love. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Linda Lee:

i'm definitely hearing the 'oo in the Turnoff, yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Yep, I can hear that :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Surely a flower's only job is to flower, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Linda Lee:

well yes! :-)
Avatar 4:50pm Franco Twinkie:

Uh oh, some of that Czecholsovakian acid has been dumped in the river!
Avatar 4:50pm Mr Fab:

Yes, it does appear that Cratedigger's is now 2 hours, tho the description still says one hour.
  4:55pm Domenic:

Like listening to your stories and facttoids GG. Liverpool and all the other details. Thank you! Have a good weekend all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi Dom! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Linda Lee:

listen to them cover Brother Ray!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

My mum *adores* Gerry Marsden :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

She denies it, but she always used to go a bit unnecessary whenever he was on TV ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Linda Lee:

the voice? the looks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think he's general "nice chap" qualities :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Linda Lee:

ah. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Linda Lee:

this Koobas track is lovely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I love the music in it :-) It's really pretty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Linda Lee:

it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Yer long blonde hurr ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Linda Lee:

ooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!! Sorrow!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Great record :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Linda Lee:

just so fabulous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think this is one of the best of the Merseybeat wave songs
Avatar 5:05pm Franco Twinkie:

Better to go "A bit unnecessary" than totally scally regarding an object of your affection, me thinks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Linda Lee:

just gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Here you go - here come the forces bit :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Linda Lee:

yes. yes.
Avatar 5:08pm Franco Twinkie:

To these west coast ears, a Kooba sounds like an ice lolly. But then again, what the hell do I know?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

It sounds like some sort of strange koala hybrid ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Linda Lee:

hahahaha!!! funniest intro!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Dave is demanding that he have a section where he can spin records but his taste runs to Chas 'n' Dave, and 80s Phil Collins. lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Linda Lee:

hmmmmm ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Linda Lee:

well, let him spin one! :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Don't encourage him!!! Imagine the feathers everywhere! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Linda Lee:

they do get messy, for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Linda Lee:

now listen to this! i think the Undertakers were hearing american bluegrass too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Linda Lee:

it's in the harmony lines.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Their collective record collections must have been worth a fortune!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Linda Lee:

my god yes.
Avatar 5:18pm Don-O:

Record scratches!!! In glorious Mono!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi Don-O! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Linda Lee:

i really do think the British kids were hearing american country & bluegrass as well. we make a lot of the r & b connnection, but there was more..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Oh absolutely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Linda Lee:

the stones finally came out of the closet with 'beggar's banquet'! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm ParUbi:

Just joining! How is everyone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

It always fascinates me how American musicians want to sound British, and British musicians want to sound American :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi ParUbi! Very well, thank you! :-)
Avatar 5:22pm Franco Twinkie:

It is soon going to be Friday night which means Tika Masala and Palak Paneer or dumplings in this house. No underground clubs for these long in the tooth music fiends
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Linda Lee:

hi ParUbi! we always have fun at the F & F.
is it just plain love, GG?
Avatar 5:22pm Martinibomb:

Hey ParUbi! Loving the show just got done pulling records for my fill-in today. whew! Now to clean the kitchen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Franco - vegetable Kashmir for me please!
@Linda - lots of love, indeed :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Thank you MB! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Linda Lee:

i really do think it's just like best friends sharing their clothes. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Linda Lee:

can't imagine the pill culture made it to Britain at all..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm ParUbi:

Can't wait for the shows tonight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Linda Lee:

something else the military threw in, no doubt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Amphetamines were massive in the early 60s in the UK
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Linda Lee:

of course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Linda Lee:

my god, imagine dealing in records *and* speed! :-D
Avatar 5:28pm Martinibomb:

oh wow never heard this version of House of Bamboo it's so rockin' oh and a cool little organ part nifty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Linda Lee:

this is *trluy* brilliant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

That drum beat is fabulous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm ParUbi:

I was prescribed them right around the time I was finishing my dissertation. So dangerous!
Avatar 5:29pm Mr Fab:

'bennies' were big with the beatniks in the '50s, so no surprise 'go pills' (as they called 'em in the military) would move into the rockin '60s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Weren't all the diet pills in the 60s pretty much speed?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm ParUbi:

Amphetamines, right?
Avatar 5:30pm Mr Fab:

yeah, House of Bamboo is usually played in an exotic style, but that was straight-up rockin. Nice!
Avatar 5:30pm Franco Twinkie:

Made me think of Chinese Gardens by Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Avatar 5:30pm Don-O:

A much better 'Bamboo' cover than Andy Williams.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Linda Lee:

sure!
i quite enjoyed speed for a while when i was *much* younger. very nice when there's a lot to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Ah! Hong Kong Garden :-) Whcih was Siouxsie's favourite neighbourhood takeaway. True story :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Linda Lee:

that's great! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm ParUbi:

makes sleep seem optional
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Linda Lee:

what's developed for the military primarily, in terms of drugs enabling you to behave like a machine, flows right into the civilian world. then to the kids of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Sleep? What's that? ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Linda Lee:

i love the sound on that one, GG. that's what i want.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Linda Lee:

what a briliant, brilliant show, GG. so much beautiful music i haven't heard before!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Thank you :-) That makes me very happy :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Linda Lee:

you know it. i'm a major fan! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

:-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm ParUbi:

I always learn so much from your shows, GG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

That makes me happy too :-) I love finding out all these things and I love passing it all on :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Linda Lee:

exactly why i'm such a fan. GG's a scholar *and* as a brilliant DJ!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I find it fascinating how things originate and become something bigger :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Linda Lee:

and is! god :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm ParUbi:

That's always fascinating. I like to dig into the background of things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Linda Lee:

'Ferry Cross the Mersey' was very big here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

:-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Linda Lee:

this one was big too!
Avatar 5:42pm Martinibomb:

Lots of stuff I'd love to sample on todays show heh heh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I love this track :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@MB - go for it! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Linda Lee:

i just adored this one as a small girl with my little radio. so much fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Linda Lee:

that piano comes straight from Brother Ray & 'what'd i say'!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

It's just so innately joyful, despite the lyrics! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Linda Lee:

sure! so incredibly fertile souding & beautiful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Yet another song that Bowie covered ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Somewhere out in the universe is a photo of myself and my friend John recreating the cover of "Pin Ups" from about 1984 ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Linda Lee:

what was really fun here ~& i remember very well ~ is that radio stations weren't at all segregated, so we heard the Mersey bands *and* Motown *and* the Brill Building pop and .. and!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Music is the great leveller :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Linda Lee:

that had to be lovely GG:-D
Avatar 5:47pm Franco Twinkie:

It's kind of hard to explain to younger people how completely unglued things got in the U.S. when The Beatles hit. And now you get Okay Boomer thrown in your face if you have the poor judgement to mention some cultural event from the past.
Avatar 5:48pm Mr Fab:

Linda: some dare call it.."freeform"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Linda Lee:

well, we didn't think our elders knew anything either. it's how it goes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Linda Lee:

hahahah! yes freeform! no 'markets' yet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I'm Gen X, so I'm like a generational Jan Brady ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Only one more song after this, and then it's Don-O with the Hour of Crap!
www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Linda Lee:

the thing was, though, that it *was* driven by money. of course. big money & big business, playlists, top 40 & all that. it just wasn't so tight in terms of sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Thank you ALL for being fabulous and spending the last couple of hours with me :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Linda Lee:

we'll have to call it the *Fabulous* Flange & Frigate. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

:-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Linda Lee:

just a fantastic show, GG. just fantastic. thank you so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I genuinely couldn't do it without any of you lovely people :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

And ... I always have a lot of fun too ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Linda Lee:

yay!!
honestly, i was a beatlemaniac child & i should really visit liverpool :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Definitely - it really is a lovely place :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Linda Lee:

she's got to end with the fab 4.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Linda Lee:

:-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

There you go ;-)
Avatar 5:57pm Franco Twinkie:

How about a Weetabix advert?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Linda Lee:

yowwwwww!!! the record i owned at age 4!!!!! yay!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Have a fantastic rest of today and a wonderful weekend everyone :-)
Huge hugs from me :-) xx
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Linda Lee:
