If you wanna turn on to Musics beyond the typical USA commercial cultural neighborhood
...from a friendly & unpretentious neighborhood store approach
- ya gotta get into this generous, beautiful, amazing & unfailing Program man - ! ! !

Evening, Gary and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Gary:

Doug! LambdaC! Going to try and add photos to the songs tonight ... for instance, that photo you see for Taxi Driver is from the scene when this song plays
Avatar 7:14pm LambdaCalculus:

My brother is telling me about one of his coworkers who plays these old showtunes at his job!
Avatar 7:17pm hyde:

love this
Avatar 7:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...got a Bollywood flick - & another whole disc of Video Toons
...well I'm hopelessly besotted w/ Priyanka Chopra now for one thing...but nevermind...
Listening to Bolly tracks on Transpacific Sound Paradise on FMU Saturdays I came to the conclusion they invented Mashups several decades ago...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm chresti:

Gary. have you seen any of these movies?
Avatar 7:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...told they go on for hours - great musical epics
...& people make a picnic of it - whole thing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Gary:

@Chresti: I have seen hundreds of them -- not every one that we're hearing from tonight, but most of them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm chresti:

What is your name? Nothing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Gary:

A girl has no name
Avatar 7:25pm LambdaCalculus:

I need to look for some of these movies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Gary:

This scene is well worth watching. The whole movie is a bit overindulgent, but the cinematography in some of it is ... *chef's kiss*: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 7:27pm hyde:

i do too. i have seen a fair number of Bollywood movies, but got a lot of work to do
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm ParUbi:

i need and would love to see more (only've seen a half dozen)
Avatar 7:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...real precursor to the currently huge businesses of JapanPop & KoreanPop

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm WR:

Hmmm. Looks like tasty selections tonight. Am at a concert (Dear Hunter) which starts in a few minutes so will be an archive listener for this Bodega show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Franco Twinkie:

Someplace in this dump I call home is a book on hoardins, the hand painted billboards advertising movies in India, that were quite common until the advent of digital crap art.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Gary:

WR! Happy concert to you!
  7:50pm Martinibomb:

I Heart Asha Bhosle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Gary:

Avatar 7:52pm hyde:

@Franco i think i've seen that book
  7:52pm Martinibomb:

The first time I ever heard her was Southern Oregon State/Ashland AM college radio. They played Dum Maro Dum and then Marty Robbins El Paso - Hah.. maybe 1980? Huge impression on my 7yr old brain never forgot those two songs.
Avatar 7:53pm hyde:

@Martinibomb that sounds like a great show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm chresti:

Being a woman is very difficult
  7:53pm Martinibomb:

@hyde they also aired Doctor Demento but it was very rare I could get them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Franco Twinkie:

Hyde, I bought it at The Hammer Museum bookstore.
  7:55pm Martinibomb:

@Hyde I actually lived quite a distance but the way AM waves work you can pick them up if conditions are right
Avatar 7:59pm hyde:

this song is so cool

Avatar 8:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...step foot in India.
Avatar 8:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...one video - fella just stalks Aishwarya Rai
...camera just focuses on the most transfixing hazel eyes in the universe...you forget Sophia Loren existed
....takes all the tropes of Swinging Western Kewl & adds the richest Subcontinental palette in the history of the world...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Gary:

Sholay is another must-see
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm chresti:

I want to see Sholay, too.
Avatar 8:28pm TDK60:

..has anyone talked about the often delay/echo-ed vocals?
Avatar 8:29pm LambdaCalculus:

This track's pretty funky!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm ParUbi:

Also, the mixing can be strange-- like the levels on the vocals are too high and clipping the ceiling
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Gary:

Yeah, hearing lots of delay/reverb in this one -- Lata supposedly sang one of the songs from Mughal-E-Azam in the W.C. to get the right reverb
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm chresti:

The production get's so wacky, I love it.
Avatar 8:34pm TDK60:

hey chresti: yeh to that.
Avatar 8:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...think of Lennon saying he wanted the sound of the Dalai Lama on a mountain for Tomorrow Never Knows - & the lengths they went to satisfy
....or Os Mutantes in Brazil trying to get a backwards tape sound - but improvising aerosol sprays instead!
...the cross-cultural transliterations !
Reverb associated with 1950s Rawk/Pop - cause it was available...& still into 1960s Psych (Elevators...) til dif things came along...
We make so much if Indian influence of Rawk - its interesting to get the opposite from the other direction!
...So much one could say about Bollywood!
....It's submursive - as intended...
Avatar 8:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...or compare to Jamaican Dub effects...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm chresti:

I know what you mean about some high vocals, on some tracks it hurt@PearUbi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Little Danny:

Love these screen captures. Hey Gary, hey all
Avatar 8:39pm TDK60:

I'm an advocate of WFMU DJs in the main studios using the Echo machine more when they announce. I'm starting a caucus...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Gary:

Little Danny! I was listening to your great show from last week this morning on the bus in to work
Avatar 8:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...its also of course Theatrical - which would emphasize Voice?
Again - we make a big deal of Pop / Orchestral works over here - & Bolly is doing it routinely ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm ParUbi:

This link has some interesting information on the overdriven vocals (scroll almost all the way down)--www.gearslutz.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Little Danny:

Oh man, thanks Gary! That makes me very happy
Avatar 8:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Great link ParUbi. Compressed... Very much a movie theater - even a drive-in sound...
Gary's bringing us trax from the 50s...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Little Danny:

Agreed, very interesting ParUbi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm ParUbi:

I've gotten used to this effect already, but it drove me crazy at first
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

hi, Gary and folx! This sounds wonderful!

Granny S-T!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Little Danny:

I used to play random '80s Bollywood cassettes I'd found through a late '60s Ampex Gemini Twin. Sounded about the right fidelity to my ears.
Avatar 8:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This episode of 'Switched On Pop' is very good
- relating broadly to sound characteristics & how they identify recorded music :
...some same territory looked @ in 'This Is Your Brain on Music' book...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Gary:

I've always wanted to read This Is Your Brain on Music
Avatar 8:55pm hyde:

@ParUbi huh. thanks for that link!
Avatar 8:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Gary: Author is both Neurologist & Producer. Not light - but intelligible. As many questions as answers...might read it again....
Avatar 9:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...on the whole - with MRIs - I think whole brain patterns are being considered where was research on isolated lobes for long time - same as with some LSD research now!...
Avatar 9:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

These women ! ...a tradition where sexuality & spirituality have a whole different relation - the great courtship of Krishna & Radha a metaphor for many things - as if Romeo & Juliette were in the Bible...
Avatar 9:10pm northguineahills:

been here, loving it.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Little Danny:

Love the vaguely Latin accents in the pop moments of "Aaiye Meharban" - sounds like plucked strings, almost
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Gary:

Avatar 9:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Its just crazy this is fully developed & distinctive in 1950 & The Beatles get endless cred for mixing Pop & Indian musics a little in 1966...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Gary:

This scene, in which Asha Parek shakes her head like nobody's business, is one of the great dance scenes of all time

Thanks for an awesome show, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm WR:

Archive listening, first two sets so far. Bollywood music has been a guilty pleasure for me for the 20 years I've lived a couple of blocks from the Eagle theater (it's been gone 5 years or so?) and perversely I never saw a movie there. Have dozens of DVDS but no systematic knowledge or understanding of the rich "genre". Glad you included Geeta Dutt, perhaps a feature on her in future?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm WR:

Oh! Don't know if I have any Usha Uthup but gotta find more!
