Options October 13, 2019: Singtime sing-a-long songs and stories

The Friendly Persuaders are back and it's a happening this week on the show.

Sister Krys teleports from WFMU in the year 1986 to share with us Subgenius Rants. Yes, these vintage vignettes can be had today (or triple your money back). The world ends tomorrow and you may, die?

Remember that time your dear host had a show titled "Whiz Bam" on CBC Radio 1 coast-to-coast every Sunday morning in 2007? Of course you don't, cause it never made it off the pilot room floor. Ah, but such sweet memories shall not fall into the sands of time. Let's relive both a demo recording for CBC (theme, home recordings) and the full length pilot (theme, Industrial Musicals) featuring phone interviews with Jonathan Ward and Dick Boyall (of Allied's 'Music to Move Families By' fame)! There's 40 minutes of your life you won't get back sucker!

B.C. Sterrett dusts off Denovangelis, a thrift store cassette found in Ogden, Utah. Let's listen to over 10 minutes of "Unity for all God's Children". Together.

Let's welcome back Archivist Viv! On this show we have, 'The Sounds of Meloncore' featuring 5 gems by Anthony Fantano from 2009!

The very wonderful Sonofabitch went on a cross country jaunt in 2005, riding the rails and recording 5 hours of her travels on a pocket recorder. Today we will hear the start of her journey arriving in Reno from San Francisco. You will hear your host a bit sloshed on wine along with a small cast and crew of Reno locals, wishing her well from an Amtrak platform, and embarking on her journey to Maine, moving through the majestic state of Utah. Today's recording is part 1 of 5 in the 'Cross Country Travelogue' series.

... and featuring the usual hodge-podge of singtime-sing-a-long songs.

A big round of applause for our sponsors this week: Kools, Circus Nuts, American Iron & Steel Institute, Colt 45 Malt Liquor, and Taystee Bread. No really, not really, so really.

i sure did miss the boat this time! i emailed you at the wrong address. :-D
Avatar 2:09pm Linda Lee:

looking forward to the show!

Avatar 2:10pm Linda Lee:

thank you my dear. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Kat in Chicago:

Hi Otis and LL! Getting cold here. Had to dig out the comforter and the Heattech from the closet this morning. Looks like a cool show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Otis!
Hi Linda Lee!
Hi Kat in Chicago!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Kat in Chicago:

Hi Rich!
Avatar 2:23pm Linda Lee:

hi Kat! hey Rich!
amazing weather here in the catskills. feels summery, as the leaves fall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Rich in Washington:

We're fully in Fall mode here. It's pretty cool and the leaves are all turning. I think I'm gonna give the lawn their final mow for the season today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Kat in Chicago:

Leaves are still green here, but the temps dropped suddenly in the last few days. Our radiators came on briefly on Friday and I wish they'd come back on again.
Avatar 2:27pm Linda Lee:

i'm just about to do the same, Rich!
i guess you're in an apartment, Kat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Kat in Chicago:

I am. Building is a hundred years or so old. Windows are pretty new so it's not as drafty as the some of the others I've lived in, but it's still kind of chilly.
Avatar 2:31pm Linda Lee:

& no thermostat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Kat in Chicago:

Nah, one is at the mercy of one's landlord in Chicago buildings such as these. The first two years I lived here it was actually overheated. Last year it started off super cold, but after repeated texts to the owner he finally got it properly adjusted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Kat in Chicago:

I didn't know Canadians had a Thanksgiving holiday at all! How is Halloween in Montreal, Otis? I find it boring in Chicago, honestly. I actually went to NYC that weekend last year. Bushwick on Halloween is pretty cute.
Avatar 2:38pm Linda Lee:

glad to hear that.
it's the same in nyc, generally. not many options aside of electric heaters to supplement.
Avatar 2:40pm Linda Lee:

always had fun in nyc on hallowe'en, 70s - 90s. nightlife, parties, parade!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Kat in Chicago:

Yeah I had one really bad landlord heating-wise when I lived in Manhattan in the 90s. And one place with electric baseboard heat which was mostly worthless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Otis Fodder:

Hi Kat and Rich!!
Avatar 2:45pm Linda Lee:

even under the best conditions baseboard heat isn't very efficient..
Avatar 2:46pm Linda Lee:

people don't like living in the same building as the landlord, but you get proper heat if you do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Otis Fodder:

Old building here and baseboard heaters. Keep blankets and space heaters handy.
Avatar 2:48pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Kat in Chicago:

I think I'm going to get off the couch and do some housey things while this is on. Perhaps the activity will warm me up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Otis Fodder:

Really worthless heat... quite often I throw plastic up over the windows and that helps. Thankfully the landlord put in new front windows 2 years back so no more drafts there... just drafts on the old wood cracks from floor to wall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Kat in Chicago:

I hate putting up plastic but I've had to do it a lot of places.
Avatar 2:53pm Linda Lee:

here's a tip for window plastic: bubble wrap! that little layer of air really makes a difference. just wet the glass a little & static keeps it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Otis Fodder:

Plastic Baseboards. My new band name.
Avatar 2:54pm Linda Lee:

Avatar 2:54pm Archivist Vivian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Otis Fodder:

First album, "THE plastic baseboards" but on the 2nd album we dropped the THE. You all are in the band, no exp necessary. We all play triangle, only.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Otis Fodder:

Hi Viv! You are on!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Otis Fodder:

thank YOU Viv!
Avatar 2:56pm Archivist Vivian:

Sorry I'm late, was watching a weird Grinch Halloween special from the 60s or whatevs
Avatar 2:59pm Archivist Vivian:

My next segment will be music by a very important and talented collaborator of mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Kat in Chicago:

Linda, that's an amazing tip about the bubble wrap. If my landlord is tardy with the heat this season, I'm going to try that.
Avatar 3:00pm Archivist Vivian:

Bubble wrap loft insulation?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Kat in Chicago:

Yay, I"m in a band! *ting*
Avatar 3:01pm Archivist Vivian:

I LOVE music that features convicted murderers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Kat in Chicago:

The Lessons are so good
Avatar 3:05pm Archivist Vivian:

A CASSETTE BLAIR FOUND? I'm v excited to hear this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Kat in Chicago:

My friend Jenn has a corpse flower and she's managed to get one stinky bloom out of it, which is hard to do in home conditions, I'm told.
Avatar 3:06pm Archivist Vivian:

Have you seen it in person?
Avatar 3:07pm Linda Lee:

hi Viv! bubble wrap window insulation. you can get it in rolls & cut to fit.
Avatar 3:07pm Archivist Vivian:

I may have to make a song called "Keys Wallet Phone" now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Kat in Chicago:

No, just pictures on Facebook. i haven't been to her place for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Otis Fodder:

Sorry not chatting so much, practicing for my new band... *ting* ! Ha!
Avatar 3:11pm Linda Lee:

Kat, if you decide to go for it i'd recommend the bigger bubbles. just figure out how much glass you have to cover & order a big enough roll. presto. done!
Avatar 3:12pm Archivist Vivian:

I should be working on my new album right now tbh but I haven't tuned in in who knows how long. I'll probably do this until I get picked up to go to work where I must scare people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Otis Fodder:

Bubble Wrap, I have a roll in the closet... Going to give that a try. Thanks, mental note recorded!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Otis Fodder:

Happy to see you here Viv, always.
Avatar 3:14pm Archivist Vivian:

PS Otis, if you have time in the future for me to do TWO segments, I'd also love to do another one with either gems from my Daniel Johnston archives, or possibly some of the most strange music in my collection (That'll be really hard to pick out)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Otis Fodder:

Do it, looking forward. I'll play 'em!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Kat in Chicago:

Do you have a Halloween-related job function, Viv, or is scaring people always part of your job? :)
Avatar 3:15pm Linda Lee:

last bubble wrap tip: i found it really made a difference last winter. i have single pane windows! just spray a little water directly on the glass & press the plastic on lightly. it should hold for the season, unless the air goes super dry.
Avatar 3:15pm Linda Lee:

then you just spray a little more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Kat in Chicago:

oh, spraying water would be soooo much more easy than struggling with duct tape.
Avatar 3:16pm Archivist Vivian:

I work at a haunted asylum. I scare people. this year my 'character' is me singing atonally or just singing in general, odd songs.
Avatar 3:16pm Linda Lee:

the water lets us use the plastic over again, too. forget the tape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Kat in Chicago:

That sounds like fun, Viv!
Avatar 3:16pm Archivist Vivian:

I brought my casiotone on Friday night. It didn't work as well as the ukulele because I couldn't get people to leave the room as quick. They'd stay in there listening to me play whatever.
Avatar 3:17pm Linda Lee:

ha! you're probably best off without an instrument!
Avatar 3:18pm Archivist Vivian:

I'll record my "The Music Of Shae Tull" segment tomorrow.
Actually, the ukulele worked very well. My bosses loved it.
Avatar 3:18pm Linda Lee:

or maybe some harsh percussion..
Avatar 3:18pm Linda Lee:

me, i'd hang out to listen to uke! :-)
Avatar 3:19pm Archivist Vivian:

I go in between singing normally to singing badly to singing in a loud, grating voice.
Avatar 3:19pm Linda Lee:

even discordant! :-D
Avatar 3:19pm Archivist Vivian:

"Rump roast"
I love this already.
Avatar 3:19pm Linda Lee:

that sounds amazing. :-)
Avatar 3:20pm Linda Lee:

i'm off to the last mowing of the year. amazing show! i'll be back.
Avatar 3:21pm Linda Lee:

carnivorous hell.. Coco Chanel! :-D
Avatar 3:22pm Archivist Vivian:

I keep on thinking he's about to like, say the name of perfumes for some reason.
Avatar 3:24pm Linda Lee:

that would've been very good.
Avatar 3:25pm Rocky Horror:

This is the meat of the tomato!!
Avatar 3:29pm Archivist Vivian:

Paper Mache Hippopotamus. That is indeed very exciting.
Avatar 3:38pm Archivist Vivian:

His favourite dish is scrambled eggs? Sounds like a real boring person.
  3:42pm BC Sterrett:

There was never a Potatoes Vol. 2 but there are the related releases: "Goobers" and "Beets." (The CD version of Potatoes has more tracks :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Mr Fab:

Hey Otis and friendly friends! Funny, just last night I was going through my bookshelf pulled out my old Subgenius books, and saw I had a one-off comic book "Bob's favorite Comics" (or something like that.) Looked it up, turns out it's quite the collector's item, going for three figures nowadays. Hope to sell off some of my collectibles soon, praise Bob!
  3:47pm BC Sterrett:

The Commercial Album is a perfect place to start in my opinion.
Avatar 3:47pm Archivist Vivian:

I'm sad I never got to see Daniel Johnston. Someone very close to me almost got to see him on his last tour but couldn't get her passport in time. I'm finally seeing They Might Be Giants next March.
Avatar 3:52pm Archivist Vivian:

Hooray, time for BC Sterrett! He's got cool stuff.
Avatar 3:54pm Linda Lee:

love that we're listening together, Otis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Otis Fodder:

I don't have the cover for BC's piece, so found an image of the universe which I hope fits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Otis Fodder:

You are so right BC (and hey!), Commerical Album is a great intro to the Residents. Another fav.
Avatar 3:56pm Archivist Vivian:

Oooh. This sounds pretty cool. I wanna see the cover art at some time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Otis Fodder:

...and hi Fab and Rocky Horror!
Avatar 3:57pm Linda Lee:

too bad he didn't send a scan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Otis Fodder:

Wow, this is great, BC, would you post a scan of the cover in the SJR group on Facebook? I'll update the playst after. No rush and thanks, this is wonderful!
Avatar 3:58pm Archivist Vivian:

Blair is one of the guys who discovered Mar-Tie and also posted Joe Meek Demos online (I believe that was him), so anything he shares is definitely gold.
Avatar 3:59pm Linda Lee:

pretty amazing.
Avatar 3:59pm Archivist Vivian:

This sounds like it was played on a keyboard I got in 1999. I think it was a yamaha but I forget. We got rid of it several years ago, RIP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Otis Fodder:

Mar-Tie yes, that was Blair!! Great backstory there, maybe for another show segment Blair?

Meek with a collab with Frank M Young and myself on my old net label.
Avatar 4:00pm Linda Lee:

aho! have a yamaha keyboard in the attic that i need to find a home for. thank you for the reminder!
Avatar 4:01pm Linda Lee:

that goes with about 400 record albums & an analogue stereo system.
Avatar 4:01pm Archivist Vivian:

Mar-Tie's grandson Phil is actually letting me put one of his songs on a compilation I have yet to release. It's a compilation of music by people with mental illnesses etc. Myself and almost every musician I'm friends with has some sort of mental ailment so we've got a bit on there. I'll try to get it out within the next two weeks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Otis Fodder:

Oh wow, he sings!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar 4:02pm Archivist Vivian:

And Mar-Tie is the final artist on the compilation, the man of the hour, if you will.
Avatar 4:02pm Linda Lee:

Vivian, that sounds brilliant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Otis Fodder:

Linda Lee... Please do a segment on this show, anything... pleeeeaaassseeeeee.
Avatar 4:03pm Archivist Vivian:

You have to, Linda!
Avatar 4:04pm Linda Lee:

i should! :-) i'll send you another email. right addy this time. :-)
Avatar 4:04pm Archivist Vivian:

I really like this, when the guy's voice started I was like; "This is gold."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Otis Fodder:

I love this, even better with the vocals. Oh yes!
Avatar 4:05pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Otis Fodder:

Blair, please share more (or all of this). Love to see this documented online in some form for download.
Avatar 4:05pm Linda Lee:

i've been asked to relocate to western maryland when i'm done here in the catskills. does this encourage me or not? i'd say it does.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Otis Fodder:

Yes, music for the next chapter in life!!
Avatar 4:06pm Linda Lee:

indeed!! :-D

Avatar 4:08pm Linda Lee:

speaking of cassettes .. really need to find the Max Fish piece i recorded in '93 about thursday night at the bar. might be amusing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm chresti:

Yay! Perfect for my after work nap.
Avatar 4:09pm Linda Lee:

back to the lawn now. loving this!
Avatar 4:10pm Archivist Vivian:

Yes, we need all of this. I'll post it to YouTube for archival purpose.
Avatar 4:10pm Linda Lee:

15 minutes. got it. ;-)
Avatar 4:11pm Archivist Vivian:

The singing is something else. This is the sort of thing I want to find at thrift stores.
Avatar 4:13pm Linda Lee:

where are the thrift store cassettes now? are they still on offer? used to find answering machine tapes fairly often.
Avatar 4:13pm Archivist Vivian:

Fantano is actually pronounced Faan-Taan-Oh.
Avatar 4:13pm Linda Lee:

i'm sorry i missed your piece, Vivian! have to revisit the archive later!
Avatar 4:14pm Archivist Vivian:

I find them whenever I can. Long Island thrift stores sometimes have cool stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Otis Fodder:

Ah, fan tan oh, nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Rich in Washington:

LL: I rarely see the classic thrift store cassette these days. I mean, like someone's homemade tapes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Rich in Washington:

Space Lady puts on a wonderful show, if she ever comes to your town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Otis Fodder:

Same here Rich... more scarce than say, 20 years ago.
Avatar 4:18pm Archivist Vivian:

The two best home made tape finds I had were: A recording of what sounded like a musical rehearsal about Shakespeare's The Tempest from the 70s (it was a big hit on reddit, it's spooky and mystical) and it also had recordings of a woman who sounded like she was imitating Joan Baez
Avatar 4:19pm Linda Lee:

when i lived in asheville i found them all the time. just amazing thrift stores ~ nickels, dimes, quarters.
Avatar 4:19pm Archivist Vivian:

The other one was of a church organ performance played by "A Professional" as the written cover put it. The best part about that tape is when the churchgoers sing, the lady holding the cassette player sings very off key, it's really endearing and sweet.
Avatar 4:20pm Archivist Vivian:

They're both online if anyone is interested. I've found other stuff too but those are the two best.
Avatar 4:21pm Linda Lee:

sounds beautiful!
i found a great one here in the catskills ~ a bunch of teenagers at a party, playing music & getting high. late 80s, early 90s, i think. just golden. melancholic.
Avatar 4:22pm Linda Lee:

i don't believe i still have it, though.
Avatar 4:22pm Linda Lee:

where do we hear those, Vivian?
  4:24pm BC Sterrett:

Thanks for giving Denovangelis his radio debut! I'll send you my latest found audio release- A sample of the homemade cassette rants and freeform/multi-track singing of local outsider cartoonist "Premium Deluxe" recorded in 1993/98.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Otis Fodder:

Wow, please do BC, that would be so great. Love to share more on the show.
Avatar 4:25pm Linda Lee:

Mrs. Miller would appear on 9th Street West, a local afternoon teenage dance program in L.A. The usual musical guests were bands like The Seeds and The Music Machine. Mrs. Miller would do Sweet Pea, which was a hit for Tommy Roe.
Avatar 4:52pm Linda Lee:

this corporate morale music just fascinates me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Otis Fodder:

That's fantastic Franco... her version of Sweet Pea is a laugh.

These shows are great, Otis! Do you have the complete episodes up somewhere?
  5:04pm BC Sterrett:

Ever since that Bathtubs Over Broadway documentary, I've had people ask if I'd sell my "Bathrooms Are Coming" lp.

Ahhh, never got picked up. Almost, but main reason was lack of Can Content on each show. Just the demo and Pilot exist, but I have written scripts and topics for 11 additional episodes... thinking I should enact those in time.

Darn that Can Con!

I would listen to this radio show. This is like the good old days of CBC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Rich in Washington:

What if you had just modified your pronunciation of about, house, etc?

We had an AM rock station,KFWB that in 1967 that would play a flower power version of the jingle from a local grocery store chain: Every Day's A Special Day At Thrifty Mart. After which the stoned DJ would talk about canned peaches and cottage cheese.
