Hey Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Gary:

Lemme know if you want to go out to RBC Video in Brighton Beach some weekend -- I feel like all the bodegas and media stores are drying up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm fleep:

Greetings and the volume's okay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Gary:

Fleep!
Avatar 7:11pm northguineahills:

I wonder who's father's regime sponsored this album? (still glad they did, the music in invaluable)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm chresti:

The opening seemed quieter to me, It sounds fine now (I turned up my volume)
Avatar 7:12pm hyde:

volume seemed ok, maybe a little restrained
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm chresti:

Also, it may have seemed quieter compared to the GTR stream, which was blasting.
Avatar 7:15pm LambdaCalculus:

My speaker is pretty loud so everything sounds good here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Gary:

I think I had it low to begin with ... hi, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm melinda:

hi Gary & folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm chresti:

That Dabke is fierce!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Linda Lee:

wow. beautiful voice, incredible music.
hi Gary! are the bodegas really leaving the island city?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Gary:

Hi, Linda! Bodegas are vanishing at the rate of one or two a week, according to an article I read a while back. I don't know if that's still true, but what I do know is true is that the opportunities to find physical media in them are definitely drying up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Gary:

Last year at this time there were two places on Steinway still selling Arabic CDs and cassettes. Both places have stopped selling them and the inventory has vanished
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Linda Lee:

gosh, i'm sorry to hear that. what's going on? digital media?
Avatar 8:10pm Franco Twinkie:

Hi Gary. I just woke up from a very disturbing dream: I came in the house for awhile and when I went back outside someone had removed our bushes, trees and fence. All the neighbors were different and we seemed to be under nuclear attack because there was all this very peculiar activity in the air.. No one could or would tell me what was going on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Gary:

Franco! Yeah, basically, physical media is becoming obsolescent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Linda Lee:

sounds nasty, Franco.
but then, dreams are the place for us to experience & work out difficult emotions safely..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Linda Lee:

that's really too bad. common ground removed..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Doug Schulkind:

History will one day turn to you, Gary, for stories of the bodega.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Linda Lee:

yet another way we're being driven to isolate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm chresti:

Franco, were there any missionaries or conquistadors?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Linda Lee:

& who was it who decided we no longer need or want analogue media? i don't remember being consulted.
Avatar 8:17pm Franco Twinkie:

I think I must have heard you talking about that while I was asleep, and just twisted it around. I fell asleep during Kenzos, show and woke up about fifteen minutes ago. But yes, it's getting harder to find newspapers. All the vending machines are smashed in and full of trash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Linda Lee:

wow. taking command of the reality studio is cheaper & easier every day!
Avatar 8:21pm listener rick:

Enjoying the Syrian music very much. A revelation. Thank you.
Avatar 8:22pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes Linda, dreams for me have become a disturbing landscape that are demented version of my waking life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Gary:

Rick! Thank you for tuning in!
Avatar 8:25pm listener rick:

My pleasure, Gary. Mrs. Listener Rick also enjoying the set very much.
Avatar 8:25pm LambdaCalculus:

Beautiful music tonight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Linda Lee:

are things a little difficult in reality right now, Franco?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Linda Lee:

it's amazing how we're evolved to create pressure release in dreaming..
Avatar 8:30pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes
  8:32pm seth from muddy creek:

Dunno where you should go but this set is rad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Linda Lee:

difficult times? i'm sorry.
so then! sure, your dreams are images made of emotion.. when things are difficult dreams will be difficult.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Gary:

Seth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Linda Lee:

no idea where to advise re vacation, Gary. my idea of a vacation is to get into the woods & sit under an oak tree. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Gary:

Haha ... mine always involves a big city somewhere
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Linda Lee:

busy busy! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm chresti:

Franco has very funny dreams, never fails to crack me up in the morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Linda Lee:

ah! good! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Linda Lee:

absurd, eh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Linda Lee:

it's good to have someone to share them with. sharing them helps us remember them & that helps us work through our stuff.
Avatar 8:43pm Franco Twinkie:

Linda, me too! I remember once telling my father that I would consider all the miserable shit about summer in L.A. worth enduring if I could just sleep under a tree for a couple of nights.
Avatar 8:45pm listener rick:

Gary, I don't pretend to know my way around Europe much. But I will point out that Spain is only a hop away from England. I'd be interested in what music you might turn up there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Gary:

Spain, now there's a place I've never been to, and very close, yes
Avatar 8:46pm LambdaCalculus:

Someone crossed the streams!
Avatar 8:46pm LambdaCalculus:

I would absolutely love to go to Spain! That's part of my heritage! (Sephardic Jewish!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Gary:

So, I've got Spain, and I've got Istanbul--that was me, Lambda-C, I accidentally looked at some video of a music store in Istanbul, and it had sound ... sorry!
Avatar 8:47pm LambdaCalculus:

:P
Avatar 8:49pm Franco Twinkie:

Anyway, the take away from this afternoons bad dream was this: As I was standing there looking at our exposed house it seemed like an excellent time to paint it now that all the bushes were gone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Gary:

Spain is expensive! OMG, I could stay for three weeks in Istanbul for what it would take for one week in Barcelona
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Gary:

Is Egypt off limits these days? Because I gotta go to Cairo some day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Linda Lee:

@Franco ~ ha! i like that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Linda Lee:

making lemonade from emotional lemons. you're resilient!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm melinda:

I want to go to Istanbul and visit the cats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm melinda:

@Franco sorry to hear you're having stress dreams, I've been having some too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Linda Lee:

just recently saw the delightful film 'kedi' ~ about the street cats of istanbul & how they fit into human society. istanbul looks beautiful in the film. welcoming. for human beings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Linda Lee:

not machines..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Gary:

OMG, I loved Kedi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm melinda:

meow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Linda Lee:

if you're on the fence about visiting, this film about cats might tip you over, even if you don't like cats. it's really a film about istanbul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Gary:

Fuck it, that's it, voting is closed: I'm going to Istanbul
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Linda Lee:

wasn't it neat? :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Linda Lee:

haha! good! i agree!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm melinda:

@Gary I thought of you when I saw the film and wondered if you had seen it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Linda Lee:

we cross posted about the cats, melinda! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Gary:

I am crying now thinking about those cats
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm melinda:

In the same article I read that called Istanbul a cat lover's paradise (sign me up!) they also said it wasn't a cheap city to travel in, which must mean that Barcelona is outrageous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm melinda:

Then again they didn't say what their point of reference was, might have been Albania.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Linda Lee:

what is it that brings on tears about those cats? i'm crying too :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Linda Lee:

i think it's the kindness shown toward them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm coelacanth∅:

hello Gary and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Gary:

Coela-C!
  9:06pm seth from muddy creek:

Ooh. This play out is killer! Great background
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Gary:

Just that they're these cats and that ... the city is so ... gosh ... and the cats are all ... I'm crying again
Avatar 9:13pm listener rick:

Been a while since I've been to Spain, Gary. Prices have gone up! I endorse the Istanbul scenario.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Gary:

Fuckin Asala, man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Gary:

I mean, come on, this is Callas-level
  9:28pm Doug Schulkind:

Gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

I just transferred flights in the Istanbul airport and wished i could have had time to visit while i was there. The airport is GIGANTIC and has a lovely napping area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Night, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37am nostrangerer:

Very interesting show. My ears and nerve endings thank you for the excellent stimulation and culture expansion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am nostrangerer:

Another archive listen comment. Yes, bodega / local ethnic neighborhood physical audio / video media is fading fast. Live in the 74th and Roosevelt station area in Queens and there used to be three or four places primarily devoted to South Asian / Bollywood and another half dozen appliance / dry goods places that all had CD and DVD. I think that is all gone now. A few Latin American bodegas on Roosevelt had music and vids as well. Have not checked recently. I assume mostly due to every one listens and watches on their phones now.
  3:45pm Marie:

Hey, Gary, this might be late but you could probably get on a low-budget tour or Turkey or parts of it with this tour company called Intrepid
