Avatar 7:08pm LambdaCalculus:

I admit I haven't heard a lot of Jarre's earliest works yet, so this should be interesting!

Whaaaa?

it's true!

Yup, just found the article about it: www.straitstimes.com...

Avatar 7:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That Leonard Cohen track style of finger-picking...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Franco Twinkie:

Hi Gary. Was Jean-Michel considered a French Pink Floyd/Hawkwind kind of thing? I really missed the moment with him. The band picture makes me think of a Hipgnosis sci-fi mash up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Gary:

It's funny because I don't remember any of the hype around Jarre or how I would have even known about him, growing up in a town of <2000 people, but I *do* remember having a similar-to-Pink-Floyd-listening-feeling when I first heard Oxygène
Avatar 7:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Closer to Tangerine Dream maybe? & 'New Age' as decades went by...Soundtrack?...'Hearts of Space' eventually...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Gary:

True, but I was ignorant of Tangerine Dream as a kid
Avatar 7:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Right - all only much later...
Avatar 7:49pm hyde:

Oxygene was a monster hit of an LP. it is def. in the Tangerine Dream mold, but it sold much bigger than any T. Dream, i think. it was kind of the weird electronic record you'd have along with Tubular Bells
Avatar 7:50pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oxygene live concert, incl. analogue synth warmup: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 7:50pm hyde:

according to the internets, Oxygene sold 12 million copies worldwide. i don't really know how it took off like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Gary:

Kenzo!
Avatar 7:51pm LambdaCalculus:

I'm glad I have Oxygene in my library.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Gary:

Damn, that's popular. It made it to the record store I would drive to in Salinas, I know that much. You gotta be popular to get into a Salinas record store
Avatar 7:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Everything here sounding very Advanced - & simple crisp Production...
Avatar 7:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Advanced in terms of sophistication & year released...the French got Style - who knew...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Franco Twinkie:

This is interesting, like many aspects of French pop culture, Americans seem to be a little hazy about the how, why, what, where. Plastic Bertrand anyone?
Avatar 7:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This one more like Chanson (?) ...like Leonard Cohen sort of an incursion of it into our awareness almost...
Avatar 7:58pm TDK60:

Hello, a bit late.
Avatar 7:59pm LambdaCalculus:

I remember hearing about Magma when I watched the Jodorowsky's Dune documentary. Apparently Alejandro Jodorowsky wanted them to compose the music for the Harkonnens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Franco Twinkie:

Magma looked like Druids, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Gary:

TDK60!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Gary:

Oh, shoot -- I saw that doc, and I don't remember that detail
Avatar 8:03pm LambdaCalculus:

Alejandro Jodorowsky wanted Pink Floyd to compose music for the House Atreides and Magma composing for House Harkonnen.
Avatar 8:05pm hyde:

i forgot about that Jodorowsky/Magma bit too
Avatar 8:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Interesting.
Magma - their own Language - quite an involved thing...never knew a lot about it!
Avatar 8:11pm TDK60:

..anyone know about their language? how extensive? for use only in their songs? etc?
Avatar 8:14pm LambdaCalculus:

Here's the language they used: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Gary:

Oh, right! Zeuhl isn't the language, it's the word for the kind of music!
  8:17pm Carmichael:

Heya Gary et al ... Magma is French and made up a phonetic language. Pretty odd, unless you like prog as much as I do.
  8:18pm Carmichael:

Called Koomei or something.
Avatar 8:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

On 10 albums !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Gary:

Carmichael!
Avatar 8:23pm LambdaCalculus:

This definitely sounds like something Magma would've played for Baron Harkonnen if Jodorowsky made his Dune movie!
  8:26pm Jeffrey C:

Oh, this is a nice selection of Magma tunes. Really enjoying this set so far!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Gary:

I point out this 2012 New Yorker article from time to time. The subject is one of my best friends elementary through high school (his twin brother being another): https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2012/12/24/utopian-for-beginners

You'll see the reference to Magma and Kobaïan.

Pourquoi, I could hear
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:47pm chresti:

Many electrocutions?
  8:51pm Dean:

I confess sometimes I can't find the groove in rap sung with an accent à la Pepé Le Pew. Somehow, French punk didn't pose that problem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Gary:

Oh man, that is not a problem that I have, Dean :)
  8:59pm Carmichael:

Gary, I agree about French punk. But I love the jazz scat stuff. Double Six of Pairs (?), French Rat Race, I find amazing.
Avatar 9:01pm LambdaCalculus:

This track's giving me a faint Serge Gainsbourg vibe!
  9:02pm Dean:

I've never bothered with Gurdjieff's music. Anybody? I suppose one point of entry would be Keith Jarrett's recital?

I'm hearing Brel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm coelacanth∅:

hello Gary and all

Ceola-C!
  9:05pm Carmichael:

Oh, I was agreeing with Dean. Imagine that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Gary:

Oh, no -- I love French punk; I meant I didn't have a problem with le rap
  9:07pm Dean:

Skornik, Lake & Palmer, for crying out loud
  9:09pm Carmichael:

I was gonna say Dream Weaver.
Avatar 9:10pm TDK60:

Whoa, this magic carpet is really sailin' high..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Gary:

Haha
  9:11pm Dean:

Good call, Carmichael. I picked up that album for a buck or two maybe a year ago. Saw Wright at a festival back in '76 with Gentle Giant, Peter Frampton, and Yes.
  9:16pm Dean:

Even here I find the French a bit off-putting. The articulation doesn't settle into the music, somehow. Maybe the fit peaked with Marc-Antoine Charpentier?
  9:17pm Carmichael:

Gary, did you know Johnny Clegg passed on yesterday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Gary:

Yes, I saw that somewhere -- but I wasn't very familiar with his music, although I've long known his name, it seems
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm coelacanth∅:

too young.
rest in peace.

Stick around after this show for Larry Grogan's Testify! - What's Going On - The Songs of Marvin Gaye: wfmu.org...
  9:23pm Carmichael:

He was revered in South Africa for his social/political work. He almost single handedly pressured the govt into releasing Mandela.
  9:24pm Carmichael:

And, as it always seems, his music was so carefree and joyous.
Avatar 9:24pm TDK60:

oh yeah, Clegg, South African anti-apartheid singer, the "white Zulu." that early Juluka stuff is good.
