Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

right back atcha NGH, best listeners are all here
Avatar 10:11pm northguineahills:

If I bought all the vinyl I liked, I'd be a tragic case on the series, "Hoarders". (and I have years of zounds on my music hard drive).
Avatar 10:13pm Little Danny:

Melinda! There you are. Hi!
Avatar 10:13pm Little Danny:

you won't hear a discouraging word around here re: hoarding, NGH
Avatar 10:16pm Little Danny:

What's for dinner tonight, friends? We have a garden full of late-season arugula, so it's been nothing but salads for the last few days. I LOVE arugula but still don't know what to do with the excess, except pesto
Avatar 10:16pm coelacanth∅:

if i had more money i'd have much too many albums. even as it is i'd like to unload maybe 1000.
Avatar 10:20pm coelacanth∅:

i love arugula but i ate so much for so long i got tired of it. i had an endive salad a few minutes ago (w onion, parsley, walnuts, olives oils, lemon juice, ume vinegar and fresh sage)
now i'm eating gortons (?) breaded fish fillets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm chresti:

it goes well with eggs
Avatar 10:22pm Little Danny:

Oh, endive salad. Excellent. I'm starting to feel the same way about arugula. It springs up like a weed here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm chresti:

Avatar 10:23pm Little Danny:

yes it does, chresti! Just wish there were more ways to freeze it besides pesto. Perhaps there are...
Avatar 10:23pm northguineahills:

My tomato plants have taken over my yard. I have over a dozen of ghost peppers ready to harvest, and, I'm scarred of, about 10 Carolina Reaper peppers are about ready. My herbs mostly died this month, as, since I'm against monoculture, I intersperse my plantings w/ native wildflowers, and they eventually overshaded my herbs. (But I got a lot while they lasted).
Avatar 10:25pm Little Danny:

Jealous of your tomato sitch, NGH. All of those Scoville-breaking peppers terrify me, basically anthing that requires that I wear gloves to process
Avatar 10:26pm coelacanth∅:

arugula grows so easily that after i harvested a million times more seeds than i or she will ever use my sister threw them onto the space between a stone wall and the street where she can't seem to make grass, clover, wild strawberry, thyme or anything else she's tried grow. it came up and covered a good patch along the road. had to be mowed periodically!
Avatar 10:30pm Little Danny:

That doesn't surprise me coel! Arugula has been re-seeding itself in the thin soil layer that lies just above our backyard weed barrier. It's like 1/4" thick at the most, this layer
Avatar 10:31pm Little Danny:

Having so much arugula is normally not an issue. So what do I do with it all?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm chresti:

I wonder if it is good dried
nettle is what grows around here, if it rains
Avatar 10:33pm coelacanth∅:

yeah, doesn't freeze well, like basil does. doesn't transplant well either.
Avatar 10:34pm Little Danny:

Huh, don't know chresti. What part of the country are you in?
Avatar 10:34pm Little Danny:

yes and yes, coel. I've tried both!
Avatar 10:34pm coelacanth∅:

i wish i had nettles growing here. and burdock.
2 "weeds" i'd make good use of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm chresti:

southern California
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm chresti:

love burdock
Avatar 10:36pm Little Danny:

Do a google image nettles search and report back, chresti! Nettles fascinate me
Avatar 10:36pm coelacanth∅:

does burdock grow where you are, chresti?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm melinda:

I have no advice re: arugula. I'm a tired gardener so I never end up with an abundance of anything except maybe dandelions and borage. I just let things grow and don't worry about harvesting everything. I let one quadrant of my garden get taken over by dandelions and ate them all summer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm chresti:

not sure if burdock grows wild here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm melinda:

I buy burdock root sometimes because it's tasty and good for liver function but after 1 day it gets bendy and hard to peel.
Avatar 10:39pm coelacanth∅:

your kidneys thank you melinda! (your liver too if you use the roots)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm chresti:

dandelion in abundance here
Avatar 10:40pm coelacanth∅:

chresti i've never peeled burdock! i just scrub it good and cut off any dark spots.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm melinda:

Every now and then I dig up a root but then my follow-through is bad.
I suppose I could try just scrubbing the burdock but it looks dark and gnarly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm chresti:

I peel the outer part with a peeler and add it to brown rice
Avatar 10:42pm coelacanth∅:

i said chresti but meant melinda -sorry! (about peeling burdock)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm melinda:

The aggressive plants tend to be ones with great medicinal or nutritional value.
Japanese knotweed is a concentrated source of resveratrol as well as having antibiotic properties, it's used for Lyme disease among other things.
Avatar 10:44pm coelacanth∅:

you do have to really scrub it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm melinda:

Dandelion is bitter but burdock is sweet and nutty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm chresti:

the markets have it- I need to study it before looking in the wild
Avatar 10:46pm coelacanth∅:

yeah i can't eat dandelion root. call me a wimp if you must! i can shake goldenseal root powder directly into my mouth but dandelion, no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm chresti:

I love a japanese dish of burdock rice made in a bamboo steamer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm doctorjazz:

Hi! Been here from the git-go, but was driving home so couldn't post up early tomorrow, this is my little break.

Hard to grow food in the garden here in lovely new Jersey, lots of deer wandering around, hear they eat it all. Basically grow green weeds...

Definitely fall into the record hoarding group... I don't think I could listen to them all if I listened 8 hours a day before I leave this world .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm chresti:

dandelion should be cooked, I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm chresti:

you have mushrooms in Jersey?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm doctorjazz:

Just ate too clog my arteries, kosher pastrami, fries, will die happy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm melinda:

I find dandelion greens unpleasantly bitter but eating a handful raw is easier than chopping and cooking regular greens.
@coel I too have eaten goldenseal powder straight. Blecch! Knotweed powder was worse. Tasted like moldy floorboards from an old barn.
Avatar 10:50pm Little Danny:

Doc! Glad you could make it! Got some Tord Gustavsen Trio lined up for the second hour
Avatar 10:51pm Little Danny:

I don't think I've ever had burdock. Color me interested
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm doctorjazz:

Cool Danny looking forward to it!
Liking this soul set!
Avatar 10:52pm coelacanth∅:

i spend many hours cutting japanese knotweed. i even reach over into the neighbor's yard and cut their's down. i likely have lyme disease too but i haven't researched how to prepare it. the weed is not going away though so i'll get to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm doctorjazz:

Chresti I'm sure we must have mushrooms here in Joisey, see them around sometimes, why?
Avatar 10:53pm coelacanth∅:

oh melinda that's sad news. free medicine that i can't stomach. that does sound worse than bitter.
Avatar 10:55pm Little Danny:

This green/s talk is super interesting. I will be re-reading when I'm not scrambling to cue up 45s. Love all manner of greens here. Again they truly fascinate me
Avatar 10:58pm Little Danny:

I've prepared delicious greens from dandelion leaves before
Avatar 10:58pm coelacanth∅:

chresti all kinds of mushrooms in jersey (& upstate ny, where i live, and in ct, where my sister's property has a wide variety, including hideously ugly and smelly but fascinating ones, morels and oysters, etc etc)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm chresti:

maybe you can have them with pastrami, doc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm melinda:

@coel it would take some effort to prepare but powdered root (the part you ingest) can be put in capsules.
Avatar 11:00pm coelacanth∅:

i've gathered shopping bags full of meadow mushrooms in nj, and seen 2 different species of hallucinogenic shrooms in abundance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm doctorjazz:

Past few days got FMU inspired vinyl in... Dizzy Gillespie's Carribesn Suite (your fault, Danny), also The Nazz 1st album and a 45 of Otis Rush, doing You Don't Miss Your Water, all heard recently here.
Avatar 11:01pm Little Danny:

good hallucinogenic or bad, coel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm melinda:

My collards struggled for most of the summer but have been doing well lately. Holey, but abundant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm chresti:

is knot weed like kudzu?
Avatar 11:01pm Little Danny:

Always delighted to inspired your worst impulses, doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm melinda:

@chresti it doesn't smother trees like kudzu, but it is considered invasive. I think it is beautiful, stalks look sort of like bamboo and leaves are big.
Avatar 11:03pm coelacanth∅:

melinda i've read that people in parts of asia eat the aerial part of knotweed, just very young ones. that's not so medicinal though?
Avatar 11:04pm Little Danny:

Very inspiring discussion! The Cool Blue Flame, your Thursday night home to hot foraging talk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm melinda:

It probably has benefits of some kind, but pretty sure it's the roots used to medicinal purposes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm chresti:

I get my music from wfmu these days-I have a long list for when I buy music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm chresti:

lot of mustard grass...
Avatar 11:07pm still b/p:

I hacked and hauled away a lotta Fallopia japonica over the summer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm melinda:

chresti me too, I hardly use any other sources and have so many things starred for future reference that I often don't know where to start.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm chresti:

kudzu root is beneficial for liver and tinnitus, I've read
Avatar 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

knotweed is gorgeous when it flowers too. it pains me every year when i cut all those flowers off to let them rot before they go to seed.
even doing that, it still would eventually take over any and all land by the roots spreading.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm doctorjazz:

Going out on Sunday with my mother in law and family ,for her 102nd birthday (Sunday is the day). Where does she want to go? Lox Stock, And Deli, a nearby kosher Deli, natch (she's more likely to have tongue or flanken). It worked for her... Then again ,I don't have her family's genes...
Avatar 11:13pm coelacanth∅:

Danny, a friend recognised them. both were psilocybin species so, relatively safe. we also saw endless fairy ring mushrooms, which i heard were mildly hallucinogenic but i don't know.
Avatar 11:15pm Little Danny:

Awesome. Didn't know psilocybin species grew that far north, coel
Avatar 11:16pm coelacanth∅:

they were past their prime or i might've harvested some. i was in my early 20s then, still dropping acid and such...as it turned out i never tried psilocybin until i was in my 40s - years after i swore off hallucinogens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm chresti:

thanks for the link melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm melinda:

Nite everyone, time to hit the sack!
Avatar 11:21pm coelacanth∅:

g'night melinda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm doctorjazz:

Good night Melinda (should go too but hanging in)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm chresti:

I thought so- title
Avatar 11:29pm coelacanth∅:

chresti do you have garlic mustards? they were trying to take over this year here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm chresti:

a good, odd set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm chresti:

coel- not sure, they have yellow flowers and grow in wild and empty lots around here. Pretty mild tasting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm chresti:

it's 8:33 here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm chresti:

hafta wait till payday...
Avatar 11:35pm coelacanth∅:

you mean the mustard grass, right? i wish i saw more of that around. the garlic mustard has white floweres and has a mild garlic AND a mild mustard taste. not bad on a veggie dog!
Avatar 11:36pm Little Danny:

Doc! Just a heads-up that I prolly won't get to the Gustavsen 'til next week. But don't go!
Avatar 11:37pm Little Danny:

Thanks chresti, I agree re: "good, odd"
Avatar 11:37pm coelacanth∅:

(wish it was more peppery though, like the one you've got there)
Avatar 11:39pm Little Danny:

Whoa I've never heard of mustard grass. Wish more in the way of edible leafy plants grew wild here in the desert...
Avatar 11:41pm coelacanth∅:

Danny what kinds of berries do you have around there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm chresti:

it's probably where you are Danny-or a version of it
Avatar 11:42pm Little Danny:

I don't know of any common wild berries here, coel, but that doesn't mean too much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm doctorjazz:

No problem Danny! Enjoying the sounds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm chresti:

wow this is great! At first I thought it was Japanese
Avatar 11:43pm Little Danny:

Lots of what looks edible here is either poisonous or insidiously prickly
Avatar 11:44pm Little Danny:

Awesome, chresti. I hear that now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm doctorjazz:

It does have a Japanese sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm chresti:

it's good to go on a hike guided by a native plant person
Avatar 11:46pm still b/p:

Just walk in the grass in Texas and some hard little burr will give you a yowtch-foot -- make you yelp!
Avatar 11:51pm coelacanth∅:

just wondering Danny. i've noticed the acres of blueberries on the ridge near here. on the highest plateaus where there's very little topsoil and it's very windy and presumably water flows away pretty quickly, the blueberries thrive.
-still not desert conditions though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm chresti:

when we moved to California, my older brother ran after a gopher in a vacant lot, next to a gas station. When he got 3/4 of the way he fell down on his knees my dad carried him back-he was covered in what we called goathead stickers
Avatar 11:51pm coelacanth∅:

wild raspberry is an invasive weed here too; but that definitely need water.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm chresti:

we had wild raspberries in Illinois
Avatar 11:53pm Little Danny:

Yeah. Definitely no blueberries. I think not enough rainfall, alas
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm doctorjazz:

Thanks Danny Night all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm chresti:

there are plenty of blackberries here
Avatar 11:55pm coelacanth∅:

i had to look that up,chresti. i see it's sometimes called "devil's thorn" and it sure looks like it! jeez.
