Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Thanks UM! I love these kind of specialized collections. A friend did a show about albums of music written for trade show productions - song writer bitterly commented that it's easy to write about love but you try writing a song about a new Chevrolet model.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Parq:

Rich, I bet Bobby H got that a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Parq:

A good player makes the soprano sax sound angelic. When I tried to play it as a kid, it made sounds that would have worked well as folely cues for Weird Al's "Weasel Stomping Day".

Ha, crazy, I've been listening to so much Boney M lately! Far out! I highly recommend their song "Somewhere in the World," it's been crushing me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Someone in my neigborhood is learning to play sax. They just play this riff of like 6 notes over and over. Where's my gun??
Avatar 12:49pm burke:

Boney M! They played in Roseland last year. I think they are pretty big in Chicago's Polish and Russian communities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Uncle Michael:

Whoa. Boney M. still rolls on?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm doctorjazz:

Paul Desmond, of the Brubeck band did indeed have a lovely tone!
Oh and hi Dinksteroons!

Jack must be a sugarholic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Funky16Corners:

For some reason my two sons (aged 12 and 14) are well acquainted with Boney M's 'Rasputin'. It must be in some Youtube/meme or something. It knocked me out when it came on the radio and they started singing along.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Uncle Michael:

Rasputin is so so so great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Parq:

Lizzie, that was a Bobs lyric. ("Your boyfriend is really a jerk/Will he ever learn to play the saxophone/He plays the same song over and over")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Jeff Golick:

The answer song was "My Friend Jack Takes Insulin."
Avatar 12:52pm Roberto:

For some reason my daughter had heard the Rah-Rah-Ras-pew-teen song in high school. She was randomly singing it one day. She's a good singer too.
Avatar 12:53pm Sem:

Jeff: heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Thanks - I didn't know that Bobs lyric.
Avatar 12:58pm Dominick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Funky16Corners:

@LittleDanny - Have you heard this: ironleg.wordpress.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm 23 Wolves:

At least part of the modern love for Rasputin comes from the Just Dance game series:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm listener james from westwood:

Boney M! I just copyedited a book about Rasputinesque figures through recent history (including the Mad Monk himself), and the author quoted the Boney M song. (I flagged it for the production editor to inquire about lyrics clearance.)
Avatar 1:06pm burke:

Boney M are an unassailable authority on many historical subjects!
  1:08pm dan:

And who said that Brits can't sound Southern?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Lane Gray:

If you're in Nashville on Monday, you MUST check out the Time Jumpers. Western swing and classic country from pickers on the A Team (Paul Franklin is the steel man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm listener james from westwood:

Was stunned to learn that the guy who hustled up Boney M also created Milli Vanilli.
Avatar 1:11pm Little Danny:

Lovely voice. Makes me think of a swampy Fred Neil during the verse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Uncle Michael:

This Floyd Tillman record goes weirdly dixieland in spots,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Lane Gray:

It's odd to hear Floyd without his trademark crazy swoops.
That lap steel is a knockout.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Funky16Corners:

@Listener James - The Omnibus podcast did an episode on Milli Vanilli where they go into the history of that guy (Frank Farian?)

This Marty Robbins song should be the national anthem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm listener james from westwood:

Went a bit waterheaded later on, I see.
Avatar 1:25pm still b/p:

I was likin' this bounce-along by Marty until I paid attention to the...diverting lyrics. Now it's a curiosity instead of a number to remember and sing for fun.

I'll say it again...I don't understand how anyone can not like ELO.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Lane Gray:

Loser is probably my favorite Dead song.
(and Jay Dee's name is pronounced like anus with an M in front)
Jay Dee was the steel player on Ray Stevens' "Misty"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Uncle Michael:

2.5 more minutes
Avatar 1:57pm still b/p:

I like some ELO, especially earliest exposure, but for me they suffered from that 70s Top 40 OVERexposure and crank-'em-out redundancy that for a while made me lean toward wearily impatient wave-offs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Uncle Michael:

Yu just wanted to say "anus" into your voice recognition, Lane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Lane Gray:

Heh. I'm in the sleeper and typing.
I see you found the Farr Brothers. (I'm in the Colorado mountains coverage is intermittent)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Uncle Michael:

Yep, thanks for the Farr Bros. tip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm listener james from westwood:

I am now so regretting, after this fine gamble-tastic set, that Florence likely will cause me to cancel my Atlantic City trip next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Lane Gray:

Dean, Bobby Black earned his legend status by both being the Commander Cody steel man during their heyday, and then playing on the cool, but way out, Asleep at the Wheel album "Framed." But probably second tier legend; not up there with Buddy, Lloyd and Jimmy Day, but second tier great is still great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Jeff Golick:

Great set.
  2:03pm dan:

Who do you think had the better jazz rock voice, David Clayton Thomas or Terry Kath?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Uncle Michael:

I don't know about about "jazz rock," but I'm a DCT man. I like bombast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Jeff.
  2:05pm Dean:

Thanks, Lane, for both the Bobby Black summary and for the proctological pronunciation heuristic.
Avatar 2:08pm still b/p:

Was talking to someone the other day about general Atlantic City matters after he was there -- persisting blight despite the casino decades, etc. -- and the interesting glimpses along the city character timeline to be found before and at time of change in films "King of Marvin Gardens, 1972, " and then "Atlantic City," 1980.
  2:09pm Dean:

"Betcha By-Golly, Wow"...a song about gambling?

I've been to Las Vegas precisely once in '76 to hear Yes and Donovan at the Alladin. I was not old enough to gamble, but I ran through the (old, pre-fire) MGM Hotel casino dropping nickels in slot machines, and I netted five bucks. I will never return to Vegas. They'll never get it back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm listener james from westwood:

I got a lucky taste of the old old Vegas when I visited the Riviera, Stardust, and Sahara back in the early 00s. Narrowly missed visiting the Desert Inn, which was being used for a Jackie Chan film after its shutdown. All of them mostly gone except for street names and their signs in the Neon Museum.
  2:14pm Dean:

Er, spelling: Aladdin.
Avatar 2:15pm still b/p:

Single Vegas experience was a late night arrival to drop off a couple party members after coming out of a Grand Canyon hike. A couple hours on the strip, then slept in a van in Frontier parking lot until lot-cleaning machines woke us up pre-dawn. What a town!
  2:18pm Tina:

The Queen of Diamonds mentioned by Robert Hunter in "Loser" may also be a direct reference to Garcia himself. In a very old divination system based on the standard 52-card deck, August 1 - Jerry's birthday - is symbolized by the Queen of Diamonds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Uncle Michael:

Tina! layers....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

Canadien hippie exotica.
  2:23pm Tina:

Yep. That pretty much sums up the Grateful Dead's oeuvre!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah, I'm always on shaky ground if I get into what Hunter *means*. It's as flexible as the Bible or Shakespeare.
  2:25pm dan:

Quebec had some interesting prog rock groups like Mashmakhan, Harmonium and Beau Dommage. It's a shame that neither one of them had an impact on the US charts.
Avatar 2:27pm βrian:

A beautiful shame, in fact.
Avatar 2:28pm still b/p:
