They are even playing in Boston the night before I'm supposed to go up there to leave for the trip, but that would mess up my plans as well. It's really bad timing. I've tried to figure out different ways to make this work and it just doesn't!

You can't do/see all things on a multi-stop trip, but little taste of Edinburgh Fringe...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm

We start in Edinburgh and head up towards Inverness, keep going north and then back down to Glasgow. 2 weeks should give us enough time to cover it all and try all the scotch on the way!

Afternoon all! Up here in Boston I work for the Hassle (online) and the Compass (in print), which seek to fill that need (though with the crackdowns on basement shows, a lot of venues are either listed under codenames, or just "Ask Around").
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
Meghan:

Ask Around.... hahaha. That's funny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm

Man, the Phoenix was the place to look there for shows....
  1:04pm
Dave B.:

Brooklynvegan is a pretty good resource here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Meghan:

I always forget to look there. It is a good source. I need to put them on my radar more regularly. Thanks for that reminder!
  1:06pm
still b/p:

Print still works pretty well here. Venues with steady full schedules advertise the calendar specifics; local columns recommend and highlight; we have a vestigial Phoenix that survived its Boston parent and has standard useful listings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
The Oscar:

Last I checked the Phoenix was still active up in Maine, but it's been dead here for years. In college my roommate and I would hole up in a coffee shop and pore through the Dig's listings, which is how we managed to see guys like Willie Alexander and Unnatural Axe (we were usually the only people there who weren't leather-clad fiftysomethings!). I run the film section of the Hassle, so I don't have to worry as much about the "secret" venues, but it's become pretty insane: www.slate.com...

Where are these guys from? I like the style of music. Hard to categorize

I have niece about to pile with a few roommates into a crazy-rent apartment near Somerville's edge and have her young adult urban adventure. Slight -- but not full -- envy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
Meghan:

I used to live at 56 Franklin in Lower Allston back in the late 90's. 3 stories, 6 bedrooms, 5 roommates with the constant flow of boyfriends. BBQ's in the backyard, huge parties and lots of fun. It was better than college for me. And most of us worked part time at Blanchards for cheap booze!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
Meghan:

power cut! Thank god you weren't in the midst of it! Sorry you were stuck in waiting purgatory.... fingers crossed for next date!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm
The Oscar:

@still b/p Been living in one of Somerville's remaining cheap neighborhoods for about 8 years now-- your niece is moving to the right place!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm

Ahh, Blanchard's-- the only place I've ever bought skunked *soda*.

still b/p:

Something in the social contract should allow for direct compensation, reparations or full apologetic recognition when such large things occur...in any context. A friend had a hugely difficult, emotional court proceeding -- stressful to anticipate, and unavoidably going to put hard awful info in his face -- postponed only when all parties were present in courtroom ready for the start on the scheduled morning.
  1:29pm
still b/p:

So different today, of course, from the Somerville image when I was growing up in southern suburbs in 60s-70s.

skunked soda?! The one on Harvard Ave?

(Two different topics in those two posts.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
The Oscar:

@Meghan Yes! It was the weirdest thing-- birch beer that tasted like dish soap. Not sure if it was an error at the bottling plant, or the fact that I was the only person buying soda at Blanchard's in years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
Meghan:

wow! Who knows! And ewwww! ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm

@still b/p I live in Winter Hill-- that and East Somerville are still pretty pleasantly lo-fi (cross the highway into Assembly Square, though, and it might as well be a different planet!)

I keep regarding the shift in Somerville as fairly recent, but it was underway at least 20-25 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
The Oscar:

It's definitely kicked into high gear in the past decade (Assembly looked like something out of Mad Max when we moved in), but I think you're right. It was funny watching people of our parents' generation blanch when we told them the neighborhood we were moving into!
