Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Oh god, I've spent more time mapping the oil infrastructure of Lake Charles 20 years ago, before I graduated, before I care to remember....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Artie:

Cripple Creek is an all time favorite in my book.
Avatar 12:07pm Brian in UK:

Uncle, some things do not date. Garth Hudson driving it as ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

One time I was listening to a program on KPFA about addiction and the presenter said, "Here's a song that describes enabling" and played Cripple Creek. Had to admit it's true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Artie:

We should all have such a sanctuary available in times of need.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm listener james from westwood:

This is why I come to this station: from Cold War spy themes to Lonnie Holley!

  12:12pm holland oats:

had heard this new holly yet thx man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm coelacanth∅:

i have a bootleg of the clash on it's an interview and Joe Strummer uses Matt Monro as an example of correct pronunciation in singing that they don't want anything to do with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Rich in Washington:

Lonnie's playing Pickathon this year. I am tempted to go.

Would love to hear Kate Smith's "God Bless Fucked-Up America."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Parq:

Lucinda Williams has a song about Lake Charles. Just noting that for the record.

Useful Idiot’s Delight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Artie:

Lonnie is amazing. Also, we just visited the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore - highly recommended for everyone, but especially Lonnie Holley fans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Uncle Michael:

Parq! Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Stanley:

Hi Brian. rained up here, too. Probably getting ready for the festival in August when the visitors arrive.
  12:16pm Dean:

Here's what's fucked-up about America: I returned from Baltimore, where I fully intended to make time to visit True Vine record shop per Doug's rec. Work, family, and weather prevented me from doing so. That's fucked-up.
  12:17pm Dean:

Wow, @Artie. Baltimore, too? Conference?
  12:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Hinky Dinky Time, bringing you this Lonnie Holley masterwork like only Give the Drummer Radio can!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm listener james from westwood:

Fucked-up indeed, Dean! Missing out on a record store is extreme cruelty on the part of the universe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm listener james from westwood:

And one of my colleagues is vacationing in B'more right now, too. It's the place to be!
Avatar 12:18pm northguineahills:

Wow, this is wild for even Lonnie Holley!
  12:18pm Dean:

Yeah, @ljfw, but I got my revenge yesterday at Down Home. That'll teach the universe.
Avatar 12:18pm northguineahills:

We all woke up in a fucked up america....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Uncle Michael:

  12:19pm Dean:

Dined well in Baltimore, though. Decent beer, too.
  12:20pm Dean:

Er, "The Band Up?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Artie:

Family friend's 50th anniversary party at Camden Yards took us up there. Only time for one side outing, and AVAM was the easy pick. I didn't know of True Vine. Thanks for the mention, that's going on the A list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Dean.
  12:25pm Dean:

I went to Baltimore for work, but brought the family. They had fun, took train to DC, played around. I had one free afternoon, so while the wife slept I took the kids "dragon-boating" in the Inner Harbor during the half hour when, suddenly, a squall hit. We were soaked. It was fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Funky16Corners:

This Angelique Kidjo cover is very cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Funky16Corners:

Jen loves this song! Great show, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Stanley:

Did anyone see the tv series this was written for?
It was wonderful
  12:28pm Coe:

‘Ello folks
Avatar 12:29pm northguineahills:

Angelique Kidjo , new to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm listener james from westwood:

I'm doing bloody amazing—last workday before vacation. Atlantic City Sun–Fri. Might hear some Bawlmer accents there, along with South Jersey and Philly.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Artie:

Angelique Kidjo is touring the Remain in Light show next spring. Reeeeally excited about this.
  12:34pm Dean:

She played here in May.

A great article about how Angélique discovered Remain In Light https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/angelique-kidjo-interview-myth-of-cultural-appropriation-covering-remain-in-light/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Jeff Golick:

Hi, @UM, and all. I am glad to learn of this Detectorists. Looks wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm coelacanth∅:

i was just lamenting how the jukebox at the pub has very little pretty things
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Uncle Michael:

Joe! Jeff!
  12:38pm Joe:

Speaking of Remain in Light anybody in the NJ/Philly interested in a couple of tickets to see D Byrne in Camden next week. Price = a kind word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for that link, Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm listener james from westwood:

Oooh, love hearing the sources of samples, especially when the whole track is a banger on its own right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

The Detectorists really is a delight.
  12:41pm Dean:

A sample from Hamza el Din? Stream slip?
Avatar 12:41pm βrian:

I watched all the episodes of the Detectorists that I could. Have they wrapped up?
  12:43pm Uncle Michael:

posting from my phone. There is a complete power outage at my place. I have no ETA for when I'll be back on the stream. I'll do my best.
  12:43pm Dean:

Ah, bummer. Just goes to show you that when you play house you need to wear a condominium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Artie:

Oh no!
  12:44pm Uncle Michael:

I think that it's playing radio station that's the problem.
  12:44pm Funky16corners:

That sucks. We just had a blip but it eventually came back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Stanley:

Hopefully, soon UM
Avatar 12:46pm northguineahills:

Could be worse, the multiple pipe explosions knocked out power to my wife's office's building and put asbestos in the air. They're already scrambling to find a new temp office.
Avatar 12:46pm Brian in UK:

The Stream proves it has value yet again.
Avatar 12:46pm βrian:

"Storms cause thousands to lose power across NE Kansas"
  12:47pm Matt in Nebraska:

Re: Talking Heads, one of the memorable moments of my youth was the time my old man opened for Talking Heads at Omaha's Music Box, there was an after show party at the bowling alley above the club and David Byrne asked me if I was "the pin boy".
Avatar 12:48pm Brian in UK:

Can you sort out some way to take power out of Washington?
Avatar 12:48pm βrian:

Zippy the Pin Boy.
  12:50pm Uncle Michael:

still no power. There's no reason to think the show will resume anytime soon. If it can resume before 3 p.m. eastern time, it will. As a side note, Matt, I was at that show in 1979. While your dad was finishing up, I went up to the bowling alley to buy cigarettes, and Talking Heads were up there bowling during your dad's set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Parq:

NGH, we're nearby, but fortunately, not near enough to be directly affected. Some day yesterday, with sirens and helicopters non-stop from 6:45 AM to well into the night, with both still intermittent at 1 in the morning.
Avatar 12:51pm northguineahills:

@Brian in UK: Some WoofMooers would probably prefer that not to happen (I know we have quite a few in that area.)
Avatar 12:54pm βrian:

UM: You could hook up a generator via the PTO on your tractor, no?
  12:55pm Dean:

Who puts a bowling alley *above* a club?!

I went bowling yesterday, and I clobbered my kids. No, I did not use bumpers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Parq:

Dean, did they?
  12:56pm Matt in Nebraska:

Cool you were also at that Talking Heads show. I remember seeing Devo at that place, too.
Good luck with the power outage.
  12:56pm Dean:

The youngest did, yes.
Avatar 12:57pm Brian in UK:

Dean is this you.
  12:57pm Uncle Michael:

I was at that Devo show too, it kind of scared the hell out of me. But that's another story. Dean, I never once heard the sound of bowling during a show at that venue. It was an old dance Orchestra place that my parents went to in their youth and probably my grandparents before them.
  12:59pm Matt in Nebraska:

I was pretty young at the time (9 or 10) but as I recall, yes... there was a bowling alley upstairs.
  1:00pm Dean:

@Brian in UK: I'm more like the mom on the sofa. There was a dad with his two kids in the lane next to ours acting like a drill sergeant. He made his kids to push-ups after the game.

I remember hearing Mingus Big Band at Fez under Time Cafe in NYC. You could hear the subways rumbling below.
Avatar 1:00pm Roberto:

Sorry I'm late, wudimis?
  1:01pm Uncle Michael:

I just checked the power company's outage map, this outage stretches 100 Mi easily. It's huge.
Avatar 1:02pm Roberto:

Power outage, I guess.
  1:03pm Uncle Michael:

From Westar: Due to weather, we are experiencing widespread outages. We're working hard and will send an update asap! See westarenergy.com/outage for more info
Avatar 1:03pm βrian:

I've toyed with the idea of getting a generator, but outages are rare and short where I live. So far, at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Jeff Golick:

More like wearentenergy.com amirite.
  1:05pm Dean:

Westar was giving me 404s a few minutes ago.

If the 'fridge starts to warm up, you'll lose the beer. I'd risk opening it just once to retrieve a few cans right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm doctorjazz:

Just got home, checking the board, sounded like the stream in the car. Good luck, UM!
  1:05pm Uncle Michael:

I'm going to take a nap. This would be a good time to listen to Kurt gottschalk
  1:06pm Dean:

Heh, he's playing Angelique Kidjo right now.
Avatar 1:07pm βrian:

Beer has been known to be drunk when warm, remarkably.
  1:10pm Uncle Michael:

it's 93 degrees right now. Eventually, the lack of air conditioning will become something of an issue.
  1:14pm Uncle Michael:

don't be alarmed if somebody comes along to change the status of the playlist from live to offline. You can still comment until the playlist is closed but I'd like to show not to show up as live on the stream in the meantime
Avatar 1:37pm Jeff Moore:

Hey, guys! About to do that thing UM warned of.
Avatar 2:08pm ndbob:

afternoon UM and everyone!
  2:11pm Uncle Michael:

I'm sorry to say there will be no resumption today. The power came back on for about a minute, and as I headed downstairs to try to resume the show we lost it again. So I'm not confident that when it comes on it will stay on. See you all next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Jeff Golick:

Just checking in to see what condition your air conditioning is in...
