Just saw Dave Burrell with William Parker. Amazing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am
Jeff Golick:

Oh, jealous, @Andrew. He just played the Vision Fest as guest of honor, not ten blocks from my home, and I missed it.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:01am

He was supposed to play here a year ago but had emergency surgery instead.

Sad I missed Dave Burell as well...

I was looking forward to catching Burrell at the Stone many moons ago, but a snow storm kept him from making it. I think Craig Taborn may have sat in...?

Get out there for a few shows (not much worse than schlepping/parking in Manhattan from here or Staten Island)...
Philly Inquirer had a nice article on the show, which I can't seem to cut/paste on my wife's ipad...

That does look like a great festival...lets of Eugene Chadbourne on the schedule.

Late arrival (actually, I checked in at 9:10, but the show hadn't started yet). Is it all piano all the time today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am
Jeff Golick:

@Doug! @Listener Gregory!

It might be, @LG...we'll see!
  10:48am
Listener Gregory:

I did catch "Makin' Whoopie," which is one of the greatest performances of all time, in my humble opinion.

  10:56am
Listener Gregory:

The connection between Takase's song and Fats Waller is not evident to me, though it was perfectly nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am
Jeff Golick:

@Andrew: well, that's something! The "chores" we need to do here to prep for this upcoming move leave me nearly paralyzed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am
Jeff Golick:

@LG: that was an Takase original, on a album of mostly Waller tunes. "Inspired by," I guess. (And agreed re "Whoopie.")
  11:05am

Idea for future show: Only versions of "Yacht Club Swing"!

Oh, glad you enjoyed. That Self-Portrait revisited has a lot to recommend it.
  11:37am

I listened to the Self Portrait bootleg package recently and realized that the out-takes were really good, and the album not very good in general. In my opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am

My favorite banner in town appears twice a year: HUGE LIBRARY BOOK SALE. I love the variety of meanings that emerge depending on the noun qualified as huge. Same for Another Self-Portrait, if you ignore the hyphen.

Listening to Tatiana Nikolayeva's second traversal of Shostakovich's 24 Preludes & Fugues (dedicated to her by the composer), I read a review of Jarrett's recording. According to the reviewer, Jarrett is one of the few pianists to respect Shostakovich's metronome markings.

it's unusual for me to listen to radio by 9am and especially on sunday; of course today i tuned in by 9. i really disliked what i heard and left! (def not Rosco Mitchell) but i've been back sporadically for most of the past 2 hours and i'm glad for the make-up time now.
  12:04pm
Listener Gregory:

@Dean, I have the Jarrett recording of the Shostakovich. I do not know enough to evaluate it, but it struck me as a tremendous piece of music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm
coelacanth∅:

(...and, hi Jeff)
  12:07pm
Dean:

@LG: The Nikolayeva on Hyperion is glorious, which probably goes without saying, but I need to add the Jarrett to the collection. His recital of Handel suites is quite beautiful. Given Shostakovich was emulating Bach, and Jarrett is a huge proponent of Bach, I'm not surprised that KJ's 24P&F is impressive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm

Hiya, @coel! Glad you made it back!

Overtime fits well with my schedule. Bowie sounds better to me now than when I was buying his records in the '70s. I'm not sure exactly why.

The show Taylor almost didn't make...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
Jeff Golick:

Happy to, @rw!

@Dean: what's the story, again?
  12:41pm
Dean:

He had trouble at the Canadian border. Program was to be Marilyn Crispell opening for CT. When it looked like CT wasn't going to make it, John Oswald and Paul Plimley opened, followed by MC. CT then arrived and went on, hence the long Complicité program. It happened to be the Victo show for which a group of us purchased a ticket for the retired nurse who ran the B&B where we stayed in town. She really enjoyed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
