Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm listener james from westwood:

Evening, Gary and all!!
Avatar 7:02pm TDK60:

Hello again Gary, for my 2nd trip down to the cornershop. I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Gary:

James and TDK60!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Gary:

These'll be hour-long sets tonight -- less maw, more Mali
Avatar 7:05pm arcadeproject:

Amadou & Mariam!!!!! I saw them at Joe's Pub a decade-plus ago, a highlight of my live-music existence. Good evening Bodega Pop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Gary:

Wait, what? Where was I?!? Super jealous, Passagenwerk!
Avatar 7:12pm TDK60:

Mali is one of my favorite African lands for music. // Dig those huge amps in the photograph!
Avatar 7:13pm northguineahills:

Didn't get back to work until 7. Was feeling ill and had to do some car maintenance. (first time in 17 years, brain still works....somewhat)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Gary:

Amazing deep well of music, which we'll obs just be treading the surface of tonight ... I think that's Super Rail Band in the photo. Hi, NGH!
Avatar 7:15pm arcadeproject:

yeah Gary where were you! always washing your damn hair! it was somewhere in 2004-5. my bad I shoulda made sure you had tix, iou.
Avatar 7:15pm hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Gary:

Haha, no probs, AP -- but still jealz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Gary:

Hy de ho!
Avatar 7:17pm northguineahills:

plaisir heureux, super onze! (the lingua franca in Niger, can't tell if they're singing in a Tuareg dialect or some other language).
Avatar 7:19pm hyde:

gotta shower and eat some food so comments may be sparse, but i'm here!
Avatar 7:19pm TDK60:

Gary: Oh, Super Rail Band, have them on some comp w/longer name of some hotel; may have been a steady gig for them. (Railroad Hotel?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Gary:

I think Bamako Hotel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Gary:

Nope, sorry, I was wrong. Just looked it up, it's: Super Rail Band of the Buffet Hotel de la Gare
Avatar 7:21pm TDK60:

sparseness is very hep, hyde, sometimes almost poetic.
Avatar 7:22pm TDK60:

..and Gare = railway station in French.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Gary:

That means my name means "I'm feeling kind of like a railway station in French."
Avatar 7:29pm TDK60:

Conductor Gary: Know several fellows from Mali via work-life. // a hotel lounge in/near a railway station in Mali must have some interesting ebb & flow of folks!
Avatar 7:37pm hyde:

great stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Gary:

I got this one in a store run by a Gambian DJ off 116th Street
  7:39pm Jill B.:

Hi Gary,

Just stopping by to say hey there. Great sounds tonight!
Avatar 7:40pm TDK60:

which borough and cross street?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Gary:

Hi, Mom! I owe you a call this weekend. Job's going great -- tired, but happy!
  7:41pm Jill B.:

I am very, very happy for you by dear son. Life is good.....yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Gary:

Life is good, mom! Yours, too, I hope!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Gary:

@TDK60: Harlem, and I *think* it was on Lexington? It was in 2014, and I haven't been able to find the place again. Run by a certain DJ WOW. You might be able to find it by looking him up? Not sure he's still in business, at least the retail business, anymore
  7:43pm Jill B.:

Life is mellow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Gary:

Oh, wait -- here's his store info! afropop.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Gary:

Also got this incredible Nahawa Doumbia CD at DJ WOW's
Avatar 7:58pm northguineahills:

Just called my Mom. Don't think she would voluntarily listen to any of my dj sets (although she did like some Tony Coulter's and Micah's show). Still at work, I prefer to work late, when I get to be alone.
Avatar 7:58pm northguineahills:

(she heard it when I was visiting).
Avatar 8:09pm hyde:

have i mentioned lately that this is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Gary:

I'm so glad you're enjoying it, Hyde -- and am glad I have an excuse to just sit here listening to these guys & gals myself as well
Avatar 8:14pm northguineahills:

(maybe w/in the next decade I can master the English language, then I can focus on others)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Gary:

^I feel the same way, NGH
Avatar 8:15pm northguineahills:

Back in '98, the band I was in at the time, got a gig in my hometown. My parents came and left w/in 7 mins. I asked them later why they left, they said, "It sounded like noise" (Not a totally inaccurate description)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Gary:

Haha, oh well. I don't know that my mom ever saw me play in my band
Avatar 8:20pm northguineahills:

Ha, found the super onze bancamp link looking for them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Gary:

Worth grabbing!
  8:26pm ?:

Gary your band must be somewhere on YouTube?
Avatar 8:27pm arcadeproject:

^^ oh the anon youtube comment so creepy! that was me, I got signed out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Gary:

Haha, no it wasn't creepy, but, also, no, not on YouTube -- I don't think there was any footage. Photos, tho. Here's one: scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...
Avatar 8:32pm northguineahills:

@Gary: Jaja!
Avatar 8:32pm northguineahills:

That Adaman Fané, Solomani Fané, Aruna Sumanan, Sinanli Fané, Alu Fané & Masa Fané was sublime!
Avatar 8:33pm arcadeproject:

YES!! so good WOW
Avatar 8:34pm TDK60:

photo: Stylin'... like 70s power pop, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Gary:

TDK60, sadly we thought we were punks. But, we were decidedly power pop I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Gary:

Band name: Submission
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Gary:

Apparently we were aspiring Writers Digest subscribers
Avatar 8:38pm TDK60:

whatever, I'm ecumenical. Submission does sound like a h/c name.
Avatar 8:42pm northguineahills:

My first band was just our given names except I, it was somewhere b/tn the Orb and Pierre Henry. I played French horn through a mic and pedals, and my bandmates played drum machines, sequencers, and micromoogs (and tons of fx). The punk band that we opened for in the aforementioned show literally pulled the plug on us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Gary:

OMG, but that sounds awesome, tho, NGH
Avatar 8:45pm TDK60:

closeminded punx
Avatar 8:48pm northguineahills:

Oumou Sangaré , chinga! este Moussa Doumbia!
Avatar 8:48pm TDK60:

...le musique has been amazing the last hour +
Avatar 8:51pm hyde:

aint that just like a cat
Avatar 8:53pm TDK60:

From whence in the realm does your show emanate?
Avatar 8:56pm TDK60:

ah, Astoria, Queens. Yes, I'm in the same Jersey City Metro Area: Wash Hts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm coelacanth∅:

hey Gary & Bodegatrons
Avatar 8:58pm northguineahills:

@coel: about to transform out of work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm coelacanth∅:

there it is. Testify! wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Gary:

coelacanth∅, hi, and thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm coelacanth∅:

hey ngh -just finished working about 25 minutes ago, and it's taken that long to get from laptop off to sound coming out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Gary:

Night, NGH!
Avatar 9:04pm northguineahills:

not leaving yet, Just finished all of the work that needed my brain. Now for the brainless work for the next 10 minutes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm coelacanth∅:

(well you may want to post it again near the end of your show. - i,for one, wish links for all [live host] shows up next were standard practice across wfmu)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Gary:

Ah! Nice
Avatar 9:07pm northguineahills:

I spent a lot of time in Astoria (I used to look for discarded vinyl in Astoria, there and Bed Stuy were huge scores for discarded wax.) (also a big fan of Wash Hgts).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm coelacanth∅:

i need to focus on preparing dinner now. i'm really tired but i've eaten little today and i like good food, so it is fate.
Avatar 9:09pm northguineahills:

I know the frustration coel (have an antique 7 year-old laptop, that I keep together through basic digital hygine).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm coelacanth∅:

i've had family and friends in queens, brooklyn and the bronx but i never committed to memory what all the neighborhoods are called.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm coelacanth∅:

7 years old? that's middle-age!
Avatar 9:11pm northguineahills:

I had kreatoptita today (Greek meat-pies). I need to learn how to make them (never tried to make greek cuisine (greek salad doesn't count).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Ike:

Good evening! Sounds lovely!
Avatar 9:14pm northguineahills:

Last night, leaving work I almost hit a "d'oh, a deer, a female deer". Hadn't seen one in the city limits yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm coelacanth∅:

i was with a 1/2 greek woman for a few years; her mother's side. her mother's non-greek cooking was fairly terrible, but her greek food was astoundingly good. easily better than any i've ever had in restaurants or elsewhere.
Avatar 9:17pm northguineahills:

If you want to troll a Greek friend, just tell them Greek cuisine is actually Turkish.
  9:18pm rw:

Howdy! I forgot to tune in on my way home from work. Here now though. Sounding great! Thanks as always for the Pop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Ike:

I would never do that. That could get violent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm coelacanth∅:

my gf had a few specialties, but never learned her mother's techniques...maybe because her mother was an asshole to her! when we lived together i was the chef; she was quite happy being the prep-cook. good arrangement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Gary:

Avatar 9:19pm hyde:

thanks for this show. it is crazy good
  9:20pm rw:

All Mali? Dang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Gary:

I totally forgot about my Armenian roommate once and brought home a bottle of raki that I put in the fridge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm coelacanth∅:

ngh i don't think i could bring myself to do that! i have turkish friends, too; but as a country in general, Fuck them!
Avatar 9:23pm northguineahills:

All of my Turkish friends have fled Turkey for the US or Germany since Erdogan took over (most left in the early-mid 2000s). In the last few years, they won't even go back to see their family. 'Tis a shame, Istanbul is a city I really want to see.
Avatar 9:24pm northguineahills:

@coel: My wife taught me how to cook Mexican. I just perfected it. (she will begrudgingly admit it).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Gary:

I share your lust for Istanbul visit, NGH. Also, Orhan Veli Kanık = one of my fave poets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm coelacanth∅:

i've tasted raki only once, but with that little experience i'll say i prefer ouzo.
  9:25pm still b/p:

Looked forward to being done with stuff and getting home to listen, and now the listening’s plenty good.... and good and plenty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm coelacanth∅:

turkey must be beautiful, and the exchange students i knew 10 years ago claimed the people were much less oppressed than in the us. (and they were living/going to school in a very "progressive" community here)
i could believe it, but maybe that's changed...and maybe the levels of freedom are different depending on one's religion, ethnicity, class or whatever.
Avatar 9:31pm northguineahills:

Ok. out out, thanks Gary and friends!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Gary:

Night, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm coelacanth∅:

tchau ngh a pleasant if not amazing journey home or wherever to you!
Avatar 9:33pm hyde:

bye ngh
Avatar 9:34pm northguineahills:

@coel: my Turkish friends have been rather vocally critical Erdogan(demonstrated at the NYC consulate), There's a reason they're in the US. (the last 16 months might make them reconsider, or not....)
Avatar 9:34pm tim abdellah:

Hey y'all - looks like a great set, Gary! Will have to catch it in the archives. Was gripped listening to the A's game. They finally beat the White Sox in the bottom of the 14th, after nearly 6 hours of play! And the rookie reliever who had his debut last night got the win, with 3 innings of scoreless relief. Something different every day in baseball!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Gary:

I saw your pics of those giant As players on the train platform, Tim!
Avatar 9:37pm tim abdellah:

I love those big guys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Gary:

Up in 20 minutes, Larry Grogan's Testify! give us "Beat Boom! 1963-1967": wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm coelacanth∅:

ngh, i never did bring up with the turkish people i've known (i'm still occasionally in touch with 2 of them) the subjects of greece or armenia, or anything else that might've set us on our separate ways.
Avatar 9:44pm tim abdellah:

This is gorgeous! I'm off to pedal home. Have a great night everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Gary:

Happy peddin', Tim!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm coelacanth∅:

yes -gorgeous! ...this voice reminds me strongly of someone else but i'm blanked out on who.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm coelacanth∅:

(Baaba Maal??)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Gary:

I *think* Baaba Maal = Senagalese
Avatar 9:50pm TDK60:

Yes, Maal Senegalese. Great too, saw him in Central Park.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm coelacanth∅:

yes - but i'm just referring to the quality of the voice. i'll think of it; it's someone i know well but i'm distracted by this what's on - i i WILL NOT turn it off!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Gary:

Ah, got it --- sorry! (and speaking of Sorry ...)
Avatar 9:56pm hyde:

killer show. thanx!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Gary:

Thank you, Hyde!
Avatar 9:57pm TDK60:

Sounds great over here, thanks Conductor Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Gary:

Thanks, TDK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm coelacanth∅:

i'm about to fire up the stove; i'll be back! Thanks Gary!
see y'all later
