Hi David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi David! Gonna play "Whiskey Before Breakfast" with some lyrics?
Avatar 4:02pm northguineahills:

Does Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia actually exist? I'm just asking questions!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Webhamster Henry:

Hey she sang "Potrzebie!" <<MAD magazine fans
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm David D:

Greetings Mark, Henry, and NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Webhamster Henry:

Yes Bielefeld exists , I used to have a kind of pen pal there. She drove up to see me do a performance in Bremen in 1994, I was very impressed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Webhamster Henry:

At least in 1994 it did!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm David D:

It is rumored to be a hoax, unless you're there, or maybe even then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Webhamster Henry:

The funny thing about this song is that it's originally in Brecht's kind of English, so it's extra alienated in Polish.
Avatar 4:08pm northguineahills:

Right as your show came on, I was reading about the "Bielefeld hoax".
Avatar 4:09pm northguineahills:

Now, I have no choice but to have a dram of whisk(e)y today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm David D:

Yes, Henry it was (purposely, I believe) translated from German into that odd English, and then came full circle here.
Avatar 4:10pm Parq:

David, I will not be able to do it while you're still on the webs, but I will drink a glass of Teeling in your honor tonight.
Avatar 4:11pm Parq:

WM Henry @ 4:03 - dig it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm David D:

Cheers, Parq!
Avatar 4:12pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm David D:

Henry, you gave me a great idea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Webhamster Henry:

Another English lyric in Mahagonny has the line
"There is no Money in this land, there is no boy to shake with hand"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Webhamster Henry:

(I basically learned German in High School from recordings of Brecht-Weill works)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Brian in UK:

Hello David and avid listeners. Thin Lizzy did it for me.

@nah appreciate your spelling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm doctorjazz:

Hello David and all you out there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Webhamster Henry:

The Whiskey Before Breakfast lyrics are definitely pro-alcoholic consumption.
Avatar 4:23pm northguineahills:

Made myself spanish-styled saffron rice w/ chilies, chives, capers and octopus and sauteed asparagus on the side. I love cooking brinner!
4:23pm Dave in Vermont on the phone:

What whiskey are you drinking David, and everyone?
Serendipitously i just bought some Old Holverholt rye on my way home and started drinking it right before your show started.
Avatar 4:24pm northguineahills:

@Brian: I appreciate yours ;)

if there is spaghetti westerns, and borscht westerns, shouldn't there be kraut westerns (heck, I've seen kimchi westerns).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm David D:

Hello Doctorjazz and Dave in Vermont!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm David D:

Once I finish my virtual whiskey I might go get an actual beer from the Radio Blau fridge, how about you?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm David D:

Evening, Brian!
Avatar 4:28pm northguineahills:

I'm on a tight budget until I pay off the debt of the last three years, so nothing fancier then jameson at home (yuck, I know, but it pairs well w/ anything). Once a month I'll get a Caol Lla or a an Ardbeg. (I'm a sucker for Islays...)
Avatar 4:29pm antiparticle:

There I was, lying in bed suffering from whatever pestilence my sister-in-law dragged into town, when it hit me: It's Transcontinental Subway time!!! I'm so grateful for this show right now. Hi all :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm David D:

Hey Antiparticle - hope you recover soon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Dave in Vermont:

Jamesons isn't half bad
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Brian in UK:

Had no thought of drinking whisky but it seems there is a glass of 10yo Ardbeg near by now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm kuba:

hej! drunk łódź checking in. we were drinking with two medicine studying frat guys tonight, just beers. wish i could appreciate whisky, but maybe not with people who have expensive watches, jackets and shoes, though.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Brian in UK:

Who needs a watch let alone an expensive one. Status what....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm David D:

Hey drunk Łódź - na zdrowie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm David D:

Sounds like a fun bar over there, Kuba...
Avatar 4:44pm northguineahills:

ohh, Yamazaki is another favorite whiskey of mine (the Japanese have really upped their game in the last 15 years).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm kuba:

well, it's the "longest entertainment street of europe" (sic)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm David D:

Brian: The watch is used to check on the progress of one's status, apparently.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Brian in UK:

Never ice.
Avatar 4:49pm northguineahills:

I haven't had a watch since I got a cell phone in 2001 (which I only got b/c I broke up w/ my gf at the time as she would call me at my school or my office constantly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm David D:

Nothing wrong with watches per se, of course, just that particular kind of watch, I suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm David D:

A nice antique pocket-watch could be fun.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Brian in UK:

David did you take that photograph the other week on your excursion?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm David D:

Yes, I did in fact, Brian, just happened to stumble across the location!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Brian in UK:

A fob watch?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Ike:

The Chinese stuff may be homemade or regional herbal liquor, or it may be this: www.gokunming.com...

Many years ago, I saw an interesting-looking red drink in a huge jar at an outdoor cafe in Yunnan and tried it. It was gross, but then I don't like most alcohol anyway.
Avatar 4:56pm Parq:

Dave in Vermont: one of our local bars has Old Overholt, and I like it a lot. And you can do *so* much better than Jamison when it comes to Irish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm David D:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm David D:

Brian: Yes, it probably wouldn't go with my usual attire, to be honest.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Brian in UK:

A gentleman has to be properly attired to wear one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm David D:

Ike: That green stuff might indeed explain the Chinese saying and song.
Avatar 5:12pm northguineahills:

I had a bandmate who on his way to Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) and made recordings of the Bernard Parmegiani's alert tones at the De Gaulle airport along the way (which was sadly replaced when I was there a few years later gottverdammt) and took field recordings at that airport and in the Burkinabé countryside and brought back some artefacts, and chilies, etc, which we miced w/ and stitched together w/ the field recordings to make a combination of Pierre Henry's "Étude aux chemins de fer" and Parmegiani's " la roue ferris" . (Burkina Faso was a French colony, so we had other Burkinabé rhythms introduced).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Brian in UK:

Ireland spells it Whiskey.
Avatar 5:12pm Parq:

Camille O'Sullivan's Instagram feed included a pic of her, Nick Cave and many others singing for Shane McGowan's birthday. Man, I feel bad for the poor old son of a bitch.
Avatar 5:12pm northguineahills:

(hence my spelling, Brian ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm David D:

Brian: Good catch - corrected!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm David D:

NGH: That sounds fascinating - do you still have the recordings?
Avatar 5:16pm northguineahills:

In grad school, I had a colleague that bartended at the Subway Inn, it was the only affordable bar from the 20s - 100s, and since my uni was on 68th, we were constantly there, as it was cheap, and when my friend worked there, I drank for free.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm David D:

Parq: Yes, I saw him interviewed a couple of years ago and he seems genuinely surprised at his own survival to date.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm David D:

NGH: Wow, I should have popped in for one myself!
Avatar 5:23pm northguineahills:

@David: Yes, but so far, only my car can play the cdr. We played it at the Kitchen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm David D:

Nice! Well I guess you can drive your car places to play it as well...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Brian in UK:

Seizure later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm doctorjazz:

Frank London is very cool.
Avatar 5:42pm northguineahills:

errr.., recorded it at the Kitchen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm David D:

Doctorjazz: He is indeed, with all of his various projects.
Avatar 5:45pm northguineahills:

Vodka, klezmer, must be referring to Ukraine, and not Texas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm doctorjazz:

And, my man Andy Statman!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm David D:

I think they dropped "Fort Worth" from the title of this particular release.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm David D:

Doc: Indeed, with thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm doctorjazz:

No prob! Statman used to have a regular gig in a synagogue in the village, I believe he still plays there some days.
Avatar 5:53pm Parq:

Sigh. It feels so empty to be listening to this show sober.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm doctorjazz:

Have to go home, put on Ray Charles, "Lets Go Get Stoned", and pull out some Chivas.
Thanks David, time to head out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm David D:

Cheers, Doctorjazz! Have a safe trip back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm David D:

Parq: Virtual drinks are always available in the lounge car...
Avatar 6:02pm βrian:

Ah, I've finally made it — only to find I missed the Bottine Souriante! I saw them a couple of times during my Vermont years. Bernie was in attendance at least once.
Avatar 6:03pm βrian:

My lounge car is tangible. And stocked with Cahors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm David D:

Greetings βrian! There will always be a place for la Bottine on the show. Saw them a couple of times myself and loved the shows. Don't think I saw Bernie there, though...
Avatar 6:08pm βrian:

A related song that's embedded in my brain: How Much Tequila (Did I Drink Last Night?)

By John Prine
Avatar 6:10pm northguineahills:

Play some soundtracks from Krtek, out favorite Czech mole!
Avatar 6:15pm βrian:

Ok, the wife is in Mexico City, so I just submitted a request for some primo Mezcal? Any suggestions?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm David D:

NGH: Yes, the Mole is the best!
Avatar 6:20pm northguineahills:

βrian: You need to give me a heads up. I'm trying to get out of work by 7ish! (NYC had an ok selection, I've only found one decent bottle here. Every time my wife goes south, I ask for mezcales y huitlacoche to bring back on the plane.
Avatar 6:22pm northguineahills:

The supermarkets there have a better liquor selection then most liquor stores here (in the better parts of town)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm David D:

Not sure if I ever have had mezcal - what is it like?
Avatar 6:28pm northguineahills:

I tend to go for smoky mezcales, rather then sweet, so if found, Bozal Mezcal (Cuixe), El Recuerdo de Oaxaca (Joven) (the only non-aged variety I like), y Bozal Mezcal (Ensamble) are what I look/ask for in Mexico. Here, I'll take anything that is marginally palatable. If those varieties can't be found, repasados and anejos are the better varieties in my experience for recommended brands.
Avatar 6:29pm βrian:

Tequila is a specific kind of Mezcal. A friend brought me back a nice Del Maguey from Mexico once. I can't recall which one, but it had the scent of piñon. Beautiful.
Avatar 6:30pm northguineahills:

Mezcal is to tequila, what Islay single malt scotch is to whisk(e)y. Usually fermented underground w/ smoldering agave branches. There is cheap shitty mezcal, but the good stuff goes down smooth. Mezcal and Scotch are my poisons of choice.
Avatar 6:31pm βrian:

I also later read that Del Maguey is a fairly recent designer brand that was started from scratch — with big money, naturally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm David D:

Thanks guys - I really don't know if it is readily available here. Sounds like something else to try, someday...
Avatar 6:36pm northguineahills:

I could barely find barely drinkable tequila the last time I was Berlin, good luck w/ mezcal in Leipzig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm David D:

Sounds like a challenge!
Avatar 6:38pm βrian:

This was the one I had:
Avatar 6:43pm βrian:

@NGH: What form is the huitlacoche in? Dried? Can it pass through Customs ok?
  6:47pm Doctorjazz:

Just got home, cool ending set!
  6:47pm Doctorjazz:

Thanks, David!
Avatar 6:48pm northguineahills:

βrian: Canned is the best kind. And yes, I've taken through customs many a times. Jarred is subpar, (my mother-in-law mails me cans)
Avatar 6:49pm northguineahills:

Del Maguey is one of the best brands I found in NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm David D:

Thanks, Doctorjazz!
