The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

  8:17pm Snayle B:

Hay you got me on that one ... Big Heart right back Atcha !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm ginafrary:

Hey there Snayle!
Avatar 8:17pm bigplanetnoise:

I once borrowed a copy from Billy Miller to transfer. It arrived in my mailbox folded in half.
  8:17pm Snayle B:

Howdeeee Miss Gina!!!
Avatar 8:17pm bigplanetnoise:

So, I had to look for TWO copies....
Avatar 8:18pm Ronnie Dark:

Finally snagged a copy on Ebay about three years ago.
Bought this and "Tall Cool One" on Gardena as a package deal from a guy for $50 hehehe
Avatar 8:18pm bigplanetnoise:

Great price!

The Dog Presides
Avatar 8:21pm Joe B:

First Crow ... - with Chris Stein!
Avatar 8:21pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar 8:21pm Ronnie Dark:

Bob- he the seller I think just posted them as a buy it now. I couldn't resist. BTW I'll send you a pic of something else I just scored last week
Avatar 8:23pm bigplanetnoise:

I forgot about that, Joe!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm ginafrary:

Thanks, Matt! (:
Avatar 8:25pm bigplanetnoise:

Did he ever make a record that wasn't great???
Avatar 8:25pm Joe B:

apparently, no!
Avatar 8:27pm bigplanetnoise:

Even I want to dance to this. And that sure wouldn't be pretty.
Avatar 8:29pm bigplanetnoise:

Tic-tac bass abuse.
  8:29pm Eargasm!:

I'd heard conflicting things about Chris Stein in First Crow. Was he in the band? I'd heard there was some sort of Morticians connection.
Avatar 8:30pm bigplanetnoise:

We heard it years ago, but left it out of the liner notes, because it couldn't be confirmed. I entrust it to Joe B - he knows all!!!
Avatar 8:30pm Daffodil2:

Hi, Gina and Bob! Just remembered to join in the fun!
Avatar 8:31pm bigplanetnoise:

Hi Daffodil!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm ginafrary:

Hi Daffodil2!
Avatar 8:33pm Daffodil2:

Didn't Hoyt Axton's mom write "Heartbreak Hotel?"
Avatar 8:33pm bigplanetnoise:

Mary is yelling "hi" to you, Daffodil!!!
Avatar 8:33pm Mailman Tom:

No video of the original Orlons exists, to the best of my knowledge.
Avatar 8:33pm Daffodil2:

That's a cool version of it!
Avatar 8:33pm Ronnie Dark:

Nice cover of the King
Avatar 8:33pm Daffodil2:

Hi, Mary!!!!
Avatar 8:34pm bigplanetnoise:

Yes - Mae Boren Axton!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Matt Clarke:

Wow this is fantastic
  8:34pm Eargasm!:

Avatar 8:34pm Joe B:

Eargasm - hmmm, just found a comment post from the drummer who claims Stein was NOT in the band. He also says the Crew/Crow misprint story is false, so ... who knows
Avatar 8:35pm bigplanetnoise:

Yeah - that's about where we landed with the story! And - btw - I had the tape box in my hands. It def says "First Crow"...
  8:35pm Eargasm!:

id heard that as well about the misprint. I think MopTop Mike gave me the info I'd heard
Avatar 8:36pm Joe B:

Jim's Steaks is my go to cheesesteak in Philly based on the fact that they have the most autographed Orlons pics on their wall of any of those places!
  8:36pm Eargasm!:

Avatar 8:37pm Joe B:

so he's wrong about the tape box, could be wrong about Chris
Avatar 8:37pm bigplanetnoise:

I am SO writing down "Jim's Steaks" - because I trust your judgement implicitly with THAT, too!!!!
Avatar 8:38pm Joe B:

yes on that I will not back down!
Avatar 8:38pm Ronnie Dark:

nice set!
Avatar 8:38pm Joe B:

and of course we know what street Jim's is on - SOUTH STREET
Avatar 8:38pm bigplanetnoise:

Thanks, Ronnie!

Avatar 8:41pm bigplanetnoise:

I love the Hesitations. But - man - a lot of Northern Soul leaves me pretty cold.
Avatar 8:43pm Joe B:

with ya BPN.
Avatar 8:43pm bigplanetnoise:

East LA - pretty distinctive stuff.
Avatar 8:44pm bigplanetnoise:

I hear that Mr. Eargasm is a HUGE Northern collector....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm ginafrary:

Joe B!
Avatar 8:46pm Ronnie Dark:

"I like the smack talk" lol You two crack me up ;-)
  8:47pm Eargasm!:

I'll bequeath the northern soul collection to you in my will, bob!
Avatar 8:47pm Daffodil2:

I Googled Hong Kong, Mississippi while it was playing, and apparently there's no such place -- only in Bo Diddley's head! :)
Avatar 8:47pm Joe B:

don't know about hong kong but there is a philadelphia, Mississippi. ! (Yes, my attempt to keep talkign about the orlons!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Matt Clarke:

Don't hang up Joe.
Sonny and Cher is always a good idea
Avatar 8:48pm bigplanetnoise:

Ronnie - I DO love "smack talk" records!!!
Avatar 8:48pm Joe B:

  8:49pm Snayle B:

Avatar 8:49pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar 8:49pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm ginafrary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Matt Clarke:

Big 4 Seasons vibe here
Avatar 8:51pm bigplanetnoise:

Check that Gary Usher production!!!
Avatar 8:51pm Ronnie Dark:

I forgot that S&C covered the Zombies!
Avatar 8:51pm bigplanetnoise:

Somehow I love this, while the Newbeats can drive me right out of the room!
Avatar 8:52pm Joe B:

great segue!
  8:52pm Snayle B:

oooohhh nice seg !
Avatar 8:52pm bigplanetnoise:

Thanks, Joe!
Avatar 8:54pm bigplanetnoise:

How many folks took a shot with this song??? Standells... Chubby Checker... No one hit!
Avatar 8:55pm Daffodil2:

Just googled Barry Mann -- wow, he wrote a LOT of songs!
Avatar 8:56pm bigplanetnoise:

Can someone tell the sax player to come in the room?
Avatar 8:56pm Daffodil2:

Uh oh! Surf's up! :)
Avatar 8:56pm bigplanetnoise:

Daffodil- yes!!! SOOO many.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Matt Clarke:

Did anyone ever do a completed version of that Mann/Weil song Masking Tape the Monkees attempted during Headquarters?
Avatar 8:57pm Ronnie Dark:

The sax was recorded somewhere IN the graveyard I guess...for authenticity!
Avatar 8:58pm bigplanetnoise:

Matt - not that I know of.
Avatar 8:58pm bigplanetnoise:

Searchers B-sides. C'mon. How good were they?
Avatar 9:00pm Daffodil2:

Got their band name from the John Wayne movie, "The Searchers." How's that for trivia?
Avatar 9:01pm bigplanetnoise:

You're Googling like mad over there!!! OR - did you just know that?!?!?!?
  9:01pm Snayle B:

that's so cool Daffodil2 !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Matt Clarke:

@BPN: one of the best. Along with these amazing fellas here
Avatar 9:02pm Daffodil2:

Was Graham Nash still with the Hollies when they recorded this?
Avatar 9:02pm bigplanetnoise:

Matt - for sure.
Avatar 9:02pm bigplanetnoise:

This was one of his last with the band.
Avatar 9:02pm bigplanetnoise:

A Tony Hicks song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Matt Clarke:

Amazing you could mistake it for a 1966 song
Avatar 9:03pm bigplanetnoise:

Graham was NOT on the A-side. (He Ain't Heavy...)
  9:03pm Snayle B:

ah so wish I coulda been at Epic during the Hollies' years... sigh.
Avatar 9:04pm bigplanetnoise:

It was the very first set I compiled for CBS! "The Epic Years"!
Avatar 9:05pm bigplanetnoise:

The best Paul & Barry Ryan track?
Avatar 9:05pm Ronnie Dark:

I remember buying that Hollies comp in '97 at Lechmere's and loving the CSN arrangement of "Magic Woman Touch"
  9:06pm Snayle B:

Sooo Cool... I didn't know you were in the halls until later...! WOWZA ! Gonna have to track that down... !
Avatar 9:06pm bigplanetnoise:

Yes - great harmonies on that. Another B-side!
Avatar 9:07pm bigplanetnoise:

Snayle - 1989!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Matt Clarke:

Sometimes their B-sides were better than the A. Now that's the Midas touch
Avatar 9:11pm Daffodil2:

"B-Side Bob!" Love it! :)
  9:11pm Eargasm!:

Paul McCartney is quote somewhere during Beatlemania as having a real fondness for the Searchers
  9:11pm Snayle B:

ah.... wow, that was def before my time there.... who knew ? I was still trekkin' to the Capitol District for Blotto shows at the QE2 ... and taking side trips to that little record store on the "other side" of the tracks... hehe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Matt Clarke:

I love the version of "Do The Best You Can" in Yugoslavia when.Tony adds that third harmony to the bridge. So great.
Avatar 9:12pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar 9:12pm bigplanetnoise:

Tell me you're joking.
Avatar 9:13pm bigplanetnoise:

Is it okay to have mixed feelings about the Fugs?
Avatar 9:14pm Mailman Tom:

Tom Rapp. R.I.P.
  9:14pm Snayle B:

What Tom said...
Avatar 9:14pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Matt Clarke:

There was a video on YouTube. It got taken down a few months ago. Let me check and see if its there.
Avatar 9:15pm Ronnie Dark:

the eternal question: Farfisa or Vox Continental?!?!?!
Avatar 9:15pm bigplanetnoise:

Had the pleasure to meet him at Terrastock.
Avatar 9:15pm bigplanetnoise:

That's a Farfisa. Midrange bump.
  9:15pm Eargasm!:

Love this album!
Avatar 9:16pm Ronnie Dark:

Avatar 9:17pm bigplanetnoise:

Need to spread the love for the early period for these guys, too.
Avatar 9:17pm Ronnie Dark:

Bob and Gina are you familiar with "Silver Morning" or "I Am Up for Europe" by The Association? Strange psych with sorta heavy guitars even!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Matt Clarke:

Terry sent me a signed recorder. What a great guy and fantastic band. This single mix is tops along with Looking Glass.
Avatar 9:18pm bigplanetnoise:

Matt - that is so cool!
  9:18pm Snayle B:

oh yes,,,, ... tired of only hearing Windy ....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Matt Clarke:

No luck on the Hollies video. It is on that Reelin in the Years DVD of them. Amazing DVD
Avatar 9:19pm bigplanetnoise:

Ronnie - that later period is hit or miss for me. I love the hits (Time For Livin', Six Man Band) and I love "Just About The Same". I'll have to give the others another shot.
Avatar 9:19pm bigplanetnoise:

Matt - I've got to hear it!!!
Avatar 9:20pm Ronnie Dark:

Those two songs are worth the listen. I agree some of the later cuts are...eh. Then again a song like "Take a Stand" off Country Wine by The Raiders is a great lost rock track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Matt Clarke:

I'd love if they found the Jerry Yester produced demos for Insight Out. Wonder if they're lost to tyme...
Avatar 9:21pm bigplanetnoise:

That'd be amazing to hear.
Avatar 9:22pm bigplanetnoise:

Sopwith was SO good.
Avatar 9:23pm Ronnie Dark:

Matt-I bet you they are out there somewhere. Either in the possession of Jerry Yester, or Curt Boettcher's estate
  9:26pm Eargasm!:

I'm still waiting for that Randy Fuller single to arrive!
Avatar 9:26pm bigplanetnoise:

I'll find you a copy in Alabama in two weeks.
Avatar 9:27pm Joe B:

one of my fave Zimmy covers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Matt Clarke:

@Ronnie: Hope so!!
Avatar 9:27pm Ronnie Dark:

Yeah that Randy Fuller tune was great! And so is the L5!
Avatar 9:28pm bigplanetnoise:

So glad y'all are listening!
  9:29pm Snayle B:

Lothar !!! Loved "Comic Strip" Is that one anywhere abouts ?
Avatar 9:30pm bigplanetnoise:

Ahhhh. I'll happily play that for you next week, Snayle!!!
Avatar 9:31pm Ronnie Dark:

Just found "Space Hymn" (Lothar) at a record store in Rochester, NY for $15!!
  9:31pm Snayle B:

oooohhhooohhhh !!!! My HERO !!!! :)
Avatar 9:33pm Ronnie Dark:

Hey @Bob @Gina could I request "Girl Go Run Away" by the Bedford Set next week?
Avatar 9:34pm bigplanetnoise:

  9:46pm Eargasm!:

Avatar 9:46pm bigplanetnoise:

Impossible to wreck this song!
Avatar 9:47pm bigplanetnoise:

Derek Quinn is on Facebook. Such a fun guitarist.
Avatar 9:47pm Joe B:

best part about this version is it's not possible to do the Freddie to it!
Avatar 9:48pm Ronnie Dark:

Graham's album is very cool! @Bob @Gina we played The Mockingbirds' "You Stole My Love" last night!
Avatar 9:48pm bigplanetnoise:

Joe - I will absolutely do the Freddie with you the next time we're together!
Avatar 9:49pm bigplanetnoise:

Who's drumming on this? So good. And weird.
Avatar 9:49pm Joe B:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Matt Clarke:

Avatar 9:50pm bigplanetnoise:

Clem Cattini?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Matt Clarke:

Just a guess. He was on so much.
Avatar 9:51pm bigplanetnoise:

The drums are just so weird on that album tho.
Avatar 9:52pm Ronnie Dark:

Avatar 9:52pm bigplanetnoise:

I love the way the drums cue the breaks, but the band keeps on a-playing!!!
  9:53pm Snayle B:
