Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm listener james from westwood:

Afternoon, Cheyenne and all! The ode to Photoshop on Clay's show this morning nearly made me crash my car. In a good way. (Well, maybe not for the car.)
Avatar 3:02pm Cheyenne:

Ha! Glad you liked (?!) it!
Avatar 3:04pm Sem:

Hello, Cheyenne, ljfw. Along for the new-to-me tunes, which, I am guessing, will be all of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm northguineahills:

Vibragun, new to me has me looking at my shoes!
Avatar 3:07pm Cheyenne:

Lots of shoes to gaze upon in today's show!
Avatar 3:09pm Mailman Tom:

My kind of music. Thank you, Cheyenne.
Avatar 3:09pm Cheyenne:

Thanks for dropping by & lending your ears!
  3:09pm melinda:

Hi folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Parq:

How convenient -- I just had my shoes shined!
Avatar 3:11pm Cheyenne:

Hi Parq & melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm northguineahills:

Iba a decir, mirando mis zapatos, pero, that's as good as my gringo spanglish gets...
Avatar 3:11pm βrian:

Popped out of that meeting like a watermelon seed. And now I'm here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm northguineahills:

Piatcions, this is real 90s revival ride material!
Avatar 3:15pm Cheyenne:

Lots of tambourine in today's program
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm northguineahills:

Gonna have to look up Dead Bees Recs, haven't heard much decent shoegaze material in over a decade.
Avatar 3:16pm Cheyenne:

www.deadbees.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm northguineahills:

Thanks for making my lazing fingers save themselves a google search, Cheyenne!
  3:19pm melinda:

Is the shoegaze designation based on subject matter or style? I'm no good with these music categories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Ken From Hyde Park:

This one has the proper amount of jingle-jangle.
Avatar 3:21pm Cheyenne:

Shoegaze is a genre; atmospheric rock without overpowering drums, often low BPM. A lot of shoegaze is instrumental so it's not necessarily 'about' anything sometimes, though there is certainly emo & goth/post-punk crossover.
Avatar 3:22pm Cheyenne:

Genres are slippery though and highly subjective.
  3:26pm melinda:

I guess I'm confusing shoe gazing with navel gazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm listener james from westwood:

Dug the shoegaze and loved the spaghetti-Western-esque Federale!
Avatar 3:33pm Cheyenne:

Train Song was too weird not to be included
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm northguineahills:

What james said, Federale had a nice Morriconesque vibe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Parq:

Never completely clear on what distinguishes shoegaze from other forms of atmospheric, mid-tempo modern rock, but hey, if it sounds good, it is good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Stanley:

Jangly guitar is good. I like jangly guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm northguineahills:

In the late 80s, music journalists (especially, NME) described what is now known as shoegaze b/c many of the artists were coy and shy. The sound soon coalesced around the artists you know in the UK, and that sound spread around the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm northguineahills:

originally known as 'navel gazing' as melinda pointed out.
Avatar 3:37pm Cheyenne:

@Parq -- Hence my addendum to shoegaze-genre-definition! A lot of post-rock/haze gets difficult to categorize.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Parq:

Cheyenne, dig it. Genre taxonomy is fun, but I prefer to roll my own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm listener james from westwood:

"Shoegaze: I know it when I hear it." —Justice Potter Stewart, probably.
Avatar 3:41pm βrian:

With a little psilocybin, any number of genres could manifest as shoegaze.
Avatar 3:41pm βrian:

(Based on what I've read, that is.)
  3:43pm melinda:

@ngh I didn't know that navelgaze was a category either, I was just trying to suss the nature of the genre from the name.
  3:44pm melinda:

@Parq I like to roll my own categories too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Ike:

Dig it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm northguineahills:

@melinda: It was originally called, navel-gazers, but that morphed into shoegazers, and still used as a derogatory term,

Haze Parade, well, they colored themselves accurately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm northguineahills:

TBH, shoegaze was my gateway to psychedelic music, and sounds beyond.
Avatar 3:51pm Cheyenne:

I think shoegaze has roots in psychedelia (hence all the dang ol' tambourines!)
Avatar 3:54pm Sem:

This reminiscent of late '60s folk tinged w/ a smidge of light acid aftermath. Just the organ alone...
Avatar 3:54pm βrian:

This track is more sky-gazer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Cheyenne!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Stanley:

That was great. Thanks Cheyenne.
  3:58pm melinda:

Thanx Cheyenne
Avatar 3:58pm Sem:

Much obliged, Cheyenne.
Avatar 3:59pm Cheyenne:

Thanks everyone!
