Howdy, Bodegans! Joining you all at a toxique moment, I see!

I'm so curious about the lyrics but I'm not good enough to decipher them.

Oh man, not me, ifny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm northguineahills:

There is also Haitian recording studios in Miami I know of.

Leaving work in 5 mins, merci, Gary!
Avatar 🇰🇷 7:38pm tim abdellah:

Haven't read this, but I remember the title from my ethnomusicology days: Gage Averill, "A Day for the Hunter, a Day for the Prey: POPULAR MUSIC AND POWER IN HAITI" University of Chicago Press, 1997.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Gary:

Happy trails, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Gary:

Ah, thank you, Tim -- I'll have to track it down
Avatar 7:44pm geezerette:

Tim A., sounds like a great read!
Avatar 7:47pm hyde:

heh, i have temp access to the Harvard library, and all three copies of the Gage Averill book are out ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Gary:

Dang! well, there's at least one for like 8 bucks on Amazon
Avatar 7:49pm hyde:

@Gary oh, that's good. the academic books that i can't find there generally are like 40-50 bucks used. gobble that up!
Avatar 7:52pm hyde:

Gage Averill also wrote a social history of American barbershop harmony, so i think the guy is legit
Avatar 🇰🇷 7:52pm tim abdellah:

These drums are WILD!
Avatar 7:53pm geezerette:

Of course there's nothing surprising about the similarities between this music and the NOLA Mardi Gras.and other Carnivals.

Our current Pres. has no idea what he's missing. What a crabbed little life. ( No offense to crabs.)
Avatar 🇰🇷 7:54pm tim abdellah:

I saw Gage Averill give a paper on barbershop once - super interesting!
Avatar 7:54pm geezerette:

Yay Hyde!
Avatar 7:55pm hyde:

@tim whoa, cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Gary:

Whaaa? Where was that at, Tim?
Avatar 7:55pm hyde:

@geezerette haha. also please stop insulting the crabs
Avatar 7:56pm geezerette:

Oops! Sorry, seafood!

Society for Ethnomusicology meeting, sometime in the 1990s...
Avatar 7:57pm ifny:

Wow, this track of Vodou Le's is gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Gary:

I kick myself for not studying ethnomusicology
Avatar 🇰🇷 7:58pm tim abdellah:

@ifny - agreed!
@Gary - it's not too late ;)
Avatar 8:03pm ifny:

Anyone visiting NOLA on a Sunday afternoon in fine weather, make sure you stop by Congo Square. There's a drum circle not to be missed. When I was there, the drumming was prefaced by a Santerìa ceremony, and a tribute to Buddy Bolden by a banjo player (who also read us a story).
Avatar 8:04pm geezerette:

IFNY, WOW, jackpot!
Avatar 8:05pm hyde:

@Gary pssst if there's any recent ethnomusicological academic article stuff you want to get a hold of, i know a guy
Avatar 8:07pm ifny:

@geezerette Blew my mind as I had just arrived fresh Buddy Bolden's graveside, which had taken some hours (and two friends) to locate. (It's easier to find now since his previously unmarked pauper's grave has been replaced with a large tombstone near the entrance to that particular cemetery (still a challenge as it is a cemetery among many). I recommend that as well. Bring a little whisky for Buddy.
Avatar 8:09pm geezerette:

Have followed Santeria sounds in Central Park to an extraordinary group of dancers and drummers. We joined them in the dance. Nothing but love and smiles.

I would indeed! Doesn't it drive you nuts that he left no recordings?
Avatar 8:10pm ifny:

As my mother likes to say, it's a short drive :)
Avatar 8:11pm ifny:

He left recordings, we just lost them. We silly mortals.
Avatar 8:14pm geezerette:

I thought he refused to record in case of imitators! I'd rather think you're right and records might still show up. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Gary:

Hmmm ... lemme put together a shortlist, Hyde!
Avatar 8:15pm hyde:

do it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm melinda:

Saw a voodoo exhibit at Museum of Natural History in NY almost 20 years ago that was fantastic. Flags, and those altars! It wasn't extensive but what was there was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Gary:

btw Hyde, I found a copy of a $2 Morita Doji CD at Bookoff a few weeks ago -- thank you for turning me on to her!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Gary:

Avatar 8:22pm ifny:

@geezerette A few other musicians attested to having made recordings with him. Anyway, even if we don't have recordings, it's fun to use the imagination to make the sounds of Funky Butt :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Gary:

Gotta love any songs that opens "Mon existance ..."
Avatar 8:26pm still b/p:

Missed early portion because was chopping the mad dangerous ice sheets out front...trying to do it one handed (bum shoulder) with a gravel shovel alternating with a tool made of a heavy clunky spike taped and lashed to a long thin pvc pole. Cro-magnon and petro-chemical technologies teamed to shatter the foe!
Now warm music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Gary:

Avatar 8:32pm geezerette:

no kidding!
Avatar 8:33pm ifny:

I love these chanteuses!
Avatar 8:35pm still b/p:

This reminds me nicely of Garifuna flavor.
Avatar 8:35pm glenn:

sheeesh. what did ice sheets ever do to you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Gary:

Sheeeet .... Glenn!
Avatar 8:39pm still b/p:

It's a ritualized form of combat. Total destruction and victory isn't the purpose. Ice will have its satisfactions to boast of later around the fire. No, wait....
Avatar 8:44pm hyde:

@Gary oops, wandered off for a bit. a two buck Morita Doji disk is a steal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm coelacanth∅:

hey Gary and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Ike:

@Glenn, get your Canadian pro-ice propaganda outta here, you... errr... so-ice-alist! Nyuk nyuk....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Gary:

Ice E Ike!
Avatar 8:56pm ifny:

For the record I have no allegiance to ice, and I have the same passport as Glenn.
Avatar 8:57pm ifny:

But then I am an ice traitor, it is spring in Vancouver.
Avatar 8:57pm hyde:

this is fantastic
