Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28am ausmanx:

good evening Uncle M and listeners, it's a little easier for me to be first since it's 10.30 pm here, so there is actually a dark end of the street,,,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47am doctorjazz:

Hey all, here for the pre game show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48am Uncle Michael:

The end of my street is still dark. I'm going to start the treat in 10 minutes, then run to take care of an errand before the show begins at 9:00 ET.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48am Uncle Michael:

And good morning!
Avatar 8:02am Brian in UK:

Hello folks, carpenter fitting fire doors so lots of wood chippings and such like. Sunshine here, no dark ends. Beautiful crisp sunny Autumn day.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48am Uncle Michael:

Good morning everyone.

Sadly, airchecks from soul stations such as this one are rare...hard to find.

Stanley! Holland! Lane!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Uncle Michael:

Avatar 9:07am Brian in UK:

Hello Lane, some good steel from Jay Dee Manees on Chris Hillman's new one, Bidin' My Time. Sad to say Tom Petty who produced it, was not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Lane Gray:

Isn't that the Hillman and Pedersen thing? While no Jay Dee, Herb is no slouch on steel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am doctorjazz:

Nice version of I'm Your Puppet, don't think of Warwick as such a soul singer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Uncle Michael:

Stererng away from the obvious version of some of these songs...more interesting....
Avatar 9:13am Brian in UK:

Lane, yes. Think Jay Dee played on Sweetheart in '68.
Avatar 9:13am Brian in UK:

Does Merrilee do DIY?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Stanley:

Fire doors Brian? Is the house turning into a night club?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am redkayak:

Morning, all :)
Avatar 9:15am Roberto:

Puffball looks a bit like my other kitty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am ausmanx:

Eucla is a very curious place, bang in the middle of the Nullarbor Plain crossing, it features on every weather map of the continent of Australia even though less than 100 people live there, simply because there's no other town within 1000 kilometres in any direction. for some reason, i have been there, but once we hit the border we turned around and drove the 1500 kilometres back to Perth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Uncle Michael:

Brian, I don't undterstand the uestion/get the joke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Lane Gray:

Who did this before Ronnie Millsap?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am redkayak:

Ahoy Uncle Michael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Lewis:

i thought this was Ray Charles for a moment...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Stanley:

@ausmanx: I read the bit about the Nullarbor Nymph
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Uncle Michael:

Patsy Sledd, Lane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am ausmanx:

yes, afraid we never sighted The Nymph, Stanley... but i'm sure she's out there
Avatar 9:21am glenn:

did dan penn die? i must have missed it, if that's the case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Lewis:

kinda like the surface noise...
  9:22am Stevel:

Is it possible that I had too much bourbon, last night? Asking for a friend.
Avatar 9:23am Brian in UK:

Uncle, well she is handy, with the hammer and chisel? DIY over here means Do It Yourself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Lewis:

many years ago, when I first started listing to wfmu, there was a DJ who did a segment each week called "old scratchy records"...

wish I could remember who that was...
Avatar 9:24am Roberto:

Nope Dan's still breathing, last I checked. I wonder did he use a Penn when writing his songs.
Avatar 9:24am Brian in UK:

Recommend Marlin Greene's Tiptoe Past the Dragon album. Great steel from Leo Le Blanc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Uncle Michael:

Glenn! Steve!
Swag For Life Member 9:31am Rich in NC:

Hello all, Hey Uncle Michael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am mauri:

Hellou there. is there a sunny side up song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Lane Gray:

Leo is an underappreciated name. (Rich, I was in NC earlier today, just left Greensboro/Kernersville)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Uncle Michael:

Mauri! I'm to scrambled. Maybe when I'm over easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am mauri:

I need to buy a new frying pan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Uncle Michael:

Me too. My old one is shaped like Tom's face. Damn you, Jerry!
Avatar 9:42am Dominick:

All these great songs are a treat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Lane Gray:

I think the 7 string Frying pans are cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Uncle Michael:

That would do Tom's face like an egg slicer.
Avatar 9:50am Dominick:

Saw Dan perform with Spooner a few years ago. Perfection!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Pedro G.:

Thank you Dan Penn for not being dead. It's been enough of a bad week in the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Pedro G.:

And I HIGHLY recommend visiting the archives to hear Evan Funk Davies' interview with Petty biographer Warren Zanes.
Avatar 9:53am northguineahills:

Waiting to hear from Joe Mcgasko that he has my new address before I donate. (I want my swag to end up on my porch!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Uncle Michael:

Pedro! NGH!
Avatar 10:00am Dominick:

Speaking of Spooner, we've been working on the next "Bootleg series" release by the still living Lucky Wilbury. It focuses on the 1979 - 1981 "christian trilogy" era. Lots of fantastic live performances with Spooner in the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am joe:

'ello folks
Sorry I'm felling out of it today and don't feel up to reading back to the top of the comments. Can I get some Cliffs Notes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Uncle Michael:

(Dan Penn's not dead.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Uncle Michael:

Two living Willburys...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Stanley:

@ngh: I got a letter today to tell me Customs are holding up my swag and want £26 ($35) to release it. Daylight robbery
  10:06am Mr C:

  10:08am Mr C:

You're a Do Right Man Uncle Mike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am joe:

Even the long standing rumor that Del Shannon was to take up the #5 spot after Roy's passing just makes it all the sadder to think about
Avatar 10:12am Brian in UK:

Uncle. Just been singing this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am doctorjazz:

Another great cover, James Govan, huh...?
Avatar 10:14am Brian in UK:

I was doing it Otis style ofcourse.
  10:19am Mr C:

Rainbow Road may have been Dan's best song, done by Arthur Alexander,, but it was never a hit...Bill Brandon's original version was pretty good too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Uncle Michael:

Didn't chart at all for Arthur?
Avatar 10:22am βrian:

She has no wheel power.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am joe:

Uncle Michael I'm going to have to swipe that Ry Cooder track to play tomorrow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Uncle Michael:

Do it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Lane Gray:

Damn! Solid coolness from Kitty
  10:25am Mr C:

Rainbow Road was never released as a single by Arthur Alexander. By the time in was recorded, 1972, deep Southern soul was long out of fashion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Uncle Michael:

Ah, I see. I'm out of fashion too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Lane Gray:

Michael, your avatar was in time to Wife of the Life
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Uncle Michael:

It's not easy being married to a clown, Lane.
  10:29am Jeff g.:

Please keep me awake on this ride to long island, uncle Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Uncle Michael:

Jeff! I'll try.
Avatar 10:33am northguineahills:

wait, Jeff, don't you live in Long Island?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Lane Gray:

Weldon didn't get too much of a chance to sing. He was too busy smoking the steel (check out Connie Smith's "I'll Come Running").
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Lewis:

Dot was a very cool label...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am doctorjazz:

If that's Destination Out Jeff G, he is a Park Slope, Brooklyn resident.

  11:01am Alex in Illinois:

Brooklyn and Queens are actually part of the Long Island. They are like the head of the fish.
Avatar 11:02am burke:

And the fish rots from the head?

As a Brooklyn Expat (now in the wilds of Jersey), I can tell you NO Brooklynite I ever knew identified him/herself as a Long Islander.

  11:32am Alex in Illinois:

It's true that politically and culturally, Brooklyn and Long Island are not the same.
Avatar 11:32am βrian:

Never heard of that. Sounds like it could go either way.
