Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Saw a story yesterday about Charlie Parker playing Birdland with Stravinsky in the audience. Quoted "Rite of Spring," causing Igor to gleefully pound glass on table, sending liquid contents skyward: http://www.openculture.com/2016/10/the-night-when-charlie-parker-played-for-igor-stravinsky-1951.html

nice set here UM!

Thanks, Bob.
  1:07pm Dean:

Come to think of it, the CGUTLY motif sounds like Stravinsky lite.
  1:11pm Dean:

Value in today's dollars of $2500 in 1951: $23,652.50.

Lonely Avenue
bio of Doc Pomus
is a great book:>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

Tate! Welcome back.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Parq:

This is such a White Guy thing to admit to, but my first encounter with "Youngblood" was the early 70s Concert for Bangla Desh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Uncle Michael:

I think I can make the same admission...Leon.
Avatar 1:23pm Dominick:

Wow, I haven't heard this one for scores of years.
  1:24pm Dean:

Story in SF Chronicle, Oct. 18, 1981, about Mink DeVille's career, mentions that Doc Pomus assisted with "Le Chat Bleu," which had trouble making it in the States.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Uncle Michael:

We have a song from that album coming up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Parq:

Dig it, but regrettably, I gotta head out. Have a great second half.
  1:26pm Dean:

Per the article: "I know Jagger," says DeVille, who is not known for his humility. "And he *knows* I can sing better than him."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm listener james from westwood:

Interesting early draft here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Jeff Golick:

Can't believe I missed a second shot at Lil Green today...

Ah, well. Early Elvis will do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Uncle Michael:

Green Day Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm doctorjazz:

Missed Green Day last week in Brooklyn (likely was a Zoo anyway).
Avatar 1:32pm Dominick:

Willy was astonished to have Doc, one of his idols, ask him if he wanted to write some songs together. He put his heart & soul into "Le Chat Bleu" only to have Capitol USA shelve it because it wasn't "punk". Fortunately it was released in Europe and import sales to the USA changed Capitol's mind.
Dean, Willy was actually quite self-effacing about his talent and yes, he could sing rings around Jagger.
  1:32pm johnk77:

yes Willy DeVille and Mac Rebennack
both co-wrote w/Doc
Willy could be difficult to work with
both when he was strung out
and when he was in rehab:<
Avatar 1:32pm chromaphone:

Only reason i know Mess of Blues is cuz of Zeppelin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Jeff Golick:

She plays the cello in Short Cuts, iirc --- oh okay yeah never mind.
Avatar 1:35pm hyde:

i love this one.
  1:37pm Dean:

@Dominick: The Chronicle article does not depict a self-effacing guy, but we can chalk some of that up to the writer, I suppose. Anyway, according to the article, DeVille left NYC in 1973 because "[t]here was nothin' happenin' in New York." Gets to Bay Area. "That two years was a very hard time for me. Cause I'm a very city-oriented guy and everybody was still hung over from the hippie thing."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Uncle Michael:

And no, Doc didn't write this...he just loved it.
  1:39pm Dean:

A guilty pleasure (of which, I know, there are none here): I like James Taylor's version of this.
  1:45pm johnk77:

Mink DeVille returned to NYC
primarily because CGBGs got hot
and they were 1 of the original
bands there-they ended up
getting on an early compilation
of CBs bands
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Jeff Golick:

I find this chorus irresistible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Jeff Golick:

Hits keep comin'!
Avatar 1:49pm Dominick:

Dean, Yep, Billy Borsey moved to SF around '73 and returned a few years later as Willy DeVille with Manfred and Ruben in tow.
Johnk77. I'm not certain there was any scene at CBGB. More like he was in the first wave that made CB's hot.
  1:49pm johnk77:

bill kirchen does little sister

both w/his bands
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Jeff Golick:

The flip of "Little Sister" is also a great tune. Two A sides, really.
Avatar 1:50pm chromaphone:

This sounds a bit sped up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

I agree.

  1:55pm johnk77:

you are correct they made it hotter
