This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

i was thinking the other day of the cool triangular flyer i had (or maybe still have in a box somewhere?) for the Arkestra show i went to at Mass College of Art in either '79 or '80. i might try to find that this weekend. i had it up for years.

the Sun Ra was very much appreciated! there's so much in that catalog to learn and listen to. i enjoyed the book about Mr. Ra by John Szwed. and it reminds me i haven't heard 'strange strings' or 'sleeping beauty' or 'languidity' in full even though i've been wanting to for years.

holy heck, i just went in my kitchen to do the dishes only to find a giant column of ants pouring out of a crack near the cabinet over my kitchen counter. it poured rain here today, and they apparently thought the thing to do was escape their flooded tunnels and make egress into my kitchen. it was like damn Phase IV in there.

this is a cool version of this tune. i listened to the Burning Spear version of this one about a million times in the 80's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm

@coelecanth i generally get scouts every spring that come in for a few weeks and then vanish, so i've always pursued a live and let live ant policy. but this time the whole crew was coming in. may need to take stronger measures.

@Flash Strap: Things are also a little bit crazy in Brazil, it seems like the country is falling apart. Not so different if Trump wins over there. And how are the news for you?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
JtotheK:

@hyde - thanks for that link! there's a comment by one "Joe" who wonders if the vocals on Robin's Theme are June Tyson, which I've wondered as well. Sounds like it could be her...
Avatar 8:59pm

Oh things are always interesting around here, life-wise, though nothing crazy is going on. Making a lot of art and so forth. Hoping Trump doesn't become too much more of a thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
coelacanth:

i feel the same hyde; but around the 4th year in this apartment they came in the spring in much larger numbers, then didn't leave for the whole summer. even to this day (6-7 years later) they show up at all times of year...both big ones and small ones.
Avatar 9:00pm
doca:

@Flash Strap: That's good, life-wise. Actually, although I fear what Trump represents, I fear more Ted Cruz. He's more "serious" and equally bad.
Avatar 9:01pm
Flash Strap:

Right there with you Doca.
Avatar 9:01pm
ifny:

@hyde @coelacanth I had an scout-turned-problem experience last summer -- I tried a lot of things and discovered that by far the best deterrent is lemon juice.
Avatar 9:03pm
ifny:

Just get those plastic lemon squeezers for convenience and make little lemon 'borders' every day or two where they're coming in. They can't stand it and will go elsewhere. IIRC it took a week or so for me to figure out where to put it and get the message across.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm
coelacanth:

ifny, i like that idea because it repels them without killing them...but, what happens to lemon juice after it's sat there for a while, besides get sticky?
Avatar 🥁 9:05pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This Barbieri reminding me a tad of Charlie Haden's Quartet West.
Avatar 9:05pm

Avatar 🥁 9:06pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Jeanne' I mean.
Avatar 9:06pm
ifny:

@coelacanth Yes, it gets sticky, but I didn't mind much because I put it down in thin lines e.g. along the lintel of the front door. And it's not like you have to do it forever. But yeah, I feel the same about ants and everything else. I don't kill something unless I'm going to eat it (unless it's trying to kill me!).
Avatar 9:06pm
Flash Strap:

This is such a great soundtrack, my god, just a towering timeless classic
Avatar 🥁 9:08pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - ants don't like powdery stuff - but may just go around it. What's the lemon squeeze stuff?
Avatar 9:09pm
ifny:

@hyde I tried everything. That was the clincher :) Lemon juice, and washing walls and floors where the ant scouts had been walking, since they leave little pheromone breadcrumbs which subsequent ants will follow and reinforce.
Avatar 9:10pm
ifny:

@Revolution Rabbit Just lemon juice in a handy squeeze bottle. Like this: az836796.vo.msecnd.net...
Avatar 9:11pm
ifny:

But you could just get a bottle of regular lemon juice and put it in a spray bottle I bet. Not sure if it would get gummed up. I bought a regular bottle and just filled up my little fake lemon squeeze bottle when it got empty.
Avatar 🥁 9:11pm

Interesting. People warn citrus attracts roaches tho'. Which may be less of a problem (one advantage of being in the cold cold rural parts here in NewHampshuh).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
coelacanth:

i used to not kill any insect unless it was in the act of hurting me or someone else. i often wouldn't even kill a feeding mosquito -i'd just brush it off.
but, first running a natural food store which would get indian meal moth infestations, then being an avid gardener - i've hardened quite a lot when it comes to invasive, parasitic, venomous, or disease-spreading species.

Avatar 9:16pm

@coelacanth haha, yeah, some things you just have to kill. in this cabin i cultivate a cadre of various species of spiders to control the flies and mosquitoes. they won't do crap about the ants, though.

Haven't had them for years, but at one point after trying to get rid of them unsuccessfully after a move, I researched their predators in desperation...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm

ifny, it may depend on the flora. the last few years had me landscaping 3 acres in ct and the j beetles can be devastating.
Avatar 9:22pm
