This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

it pops all the themes, makes them hurt

Apologies if you covered this in the intro, but did you bite the bullet and buy the box set? (I didn't even know there existed one, but just looked at it on Amazon)
Avatar 7:24pm
Flash Strap:

Hello Mayuko!
Avatar 7:25pm
Flash Strap:

well.... I didn't BUY it, alas. I do HAVE it, and it's essential. Depending on how devoted you are to outtakes and studio patter. The 2 disc version could do, as it's reconstructed Smile is THE one, I think

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
listener james from westwood:

It was on FMU, years ago, when I first heard the rough cuts and takes and instrumental bits that made up some of the Beach Boys' later songs. It's not that I didn't know how much layering and how many takes went into producing their music, but I'd never heard the process in such detail. Amazing and exacting craft.
Avatar 7:32pm
ndbob:

I've heard it but don't have it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Gary:

I had the Brian Wilson Presents version (if that's what it was called), but Holy God it gave no indication of how awesome this is so far.
Avatar 7:34pm
Flash Strap:

One of the best things is hearing how brilliant and not crazy Brian sounds. There's also just so many ideas going on, it's almost unbearable. It's a universe splitting in half for an overabundance of life
Avatar 7:34pm
Flash Strap:

I really don't like the Brian Wilson Presents, though I want to
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
Santos L Halper:

Ooohh, just tuned in. I've got the SMiLE box (thanks Mom!) and it's pretty great. Kind of hypnotic, all the tons of outtakes and bits and pieces

Avatar 7:48pm

still one of my favorite Beach Boys songs!

Mine too, Bob. I love the way he shreds his vocals, and this totally Zombies keyboard break
Avatar 7:51pm

I love this one too. The sound of a total genius slacking off. Shoulda been a huge hit

As long as it's not damaging, it's cool. I find thunder to be a mind-altering substance. I don't think this is tornadic.
Avatar 8:21pm
Flash Strap:

Yeah, that's doable. The tornadoes are awful but a good thunderstorm is just fine
Avatar 8:22pm
hyde:

20/20 isn't bad overall, but i sure find that "cotton fields" cover to open side 2 tough to take
Avatar 8:22pm

I am not. I agree with you, that one is such a hot stinker

It fit in well in a rather wistful, bittersweet, melancholic set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Gary:

Great, now I'm obligated to YouTube "Beach Boys" + "Cotton Fields" after the show
Avatar 8:28pm
Flash Strap:

This is the song that snapped Mike Love's twig-like mind. WHAT DOES IT MEAN? WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Avatar 8:30pm
Flash Strap:

specifically this lyric:
Over and over
The crow cries, uncover the cornfield
Over and over
The thresher and hover the wheat field
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
Santos L Halper:

"snapped Mike Love's twig-like mind". Priceless! : D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
Uncle Michael:

Gary, stick with the Highwaymen's "folk scare" era version:

www.youtube.com...
Avatar 8:32pm

I think I actually first got really into the Beach Boys after I had sort of burned down Nilsson thru overlistening. They were the only thing that seemed to fill the void
Avatar 9:05pm

I actually don't know, C. My guess would be Carl?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm
Uncle Michael:

I would be sad if I ever grew weary of Harry.
Avatar 9:08pm

It was more that I wanted to make sure I never would. It was 24/7 for a while. Of course, now I have that problem with the Boys, more often than not

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm

Melinda, I reached that common Beatles saturation point that so many of us do. It;s kind of nice to now be back to being able to hear how certain of their stuff is so good that it truly transcends that familiarity. It's almost like new music again in those moments.

Fire (Mrs. O'Leary's Cow) is of course the track where Brian had a fire going in the studio, had everyone wearing firemen's helmets, etc. and eventually came to feel it had psychokinetic properties when a nearby fire broke out. he may or may not have tried to destroy the tapes in fear
