Good Wednesday, Gary and all!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm listener james from westwood:

I had to Google Upper Hutt. I figured it had nothing to do with a certain Tatooine-based gangster....
Avatar 7:02pm ndbob:

evening Gary , James, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Gary:

LOL, well if it's any consolation, I had to Google Tatooine
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Gary:

Hey Bob!
  7:03pm spodiodi:

Saints be praised! This show is very much needed at this time :)
Avatar 7:03pm Tusalava:

This song always makes me wish there was a bodega near me.
Avatar 7:04pm Tusalava:

Hi Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm steve:

yo Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Gary:

Howdy Spodiodi, Tusalava and Steve!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm listener james from westwood:

Gary, George Lucas jacked the name from the Berber-influenced city of Tataouine, Tunisia. If anyone on FMU has something from that region in their music collection, my money's on it being you!
  7:07pm spodiodi:

Howdy, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm listener james from westwood:

@Tusalava: I've got a wee one less than a block away, opened to serve to our growing population of Mexican and other Central American folk. It's ridiculously convenient.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Gary:

Aha ... well, I would have to dig around and do a bit of research ... I don't have a lot of Tunisian music, and I'm not sure where in Tunisia it's from ... Rob's a better bet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yeah - ?!?!?! :
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Gary:

Oh, man -- that's just ... hey, RevRab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Rich in Washington:

Justin Bieber's from Tunisia?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm listener james from westwood:

@True that, Rob, or Donna with some lonely desert-camp field recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Rich in Washington:

This is a great show, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Gary:

Rich, that's ... rich :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Gary:

We'll be hearing the group you see to your left after this terrific German-Turkish recording ...
  7:17pm Scuttle:

Damn! This is insane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm cklequ:

Loving the show tonight. Nice to get a chance to listen live again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Gary:

Nice to see you, Cklequ!

Kiwi hiphop, interesting....

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Gary:

Avatar 7:24pm northguineahills:

I believe /rupture has sampled/played Fnaire before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Gary:

It's very likely /rupture played them b/c their name and the album title popped up when I started to plug it in the playlist. That man is a superhero, speaking of
Avatar 7:26pm ndbob:

I really don't like domestic hip hop much - but I do like a fair amount of global hip hop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- kinda the same for me ndbob; the way it gives a voice to the underclass all over the world is really something.
Avatar 7:28pm carol:

Avatar 7:29pm Mayuko:

Got home! Good evening Gary and everyone.
Avatar 7:29pm carol:

in the hizzouse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm listener james from westwood:

There's probably a good (and likely multivolume) book waiting to be written about how hip-hip went global. If it hasn't already been written.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Gary:

Mayuko! Thrilling first show you did!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 7:34pm northguineahills:

@ndbob: there's been barely any domestic hiphop I've liked in the last 10 years, but it exists....

  7:42pm Dean:

Wait, there's sound?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Gary:

In theory ... howdy, Dean!
Avatar 7:44pm Mayuko:

@james I have a mixed feeling about Japanese hip hop so I kinda hope the book wouldn't spend too many pages on it. I don't know much at all but Mongolian hip-hop seems to be doing more interesting things. I once heard them mix it with throat singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Gary:

We'll be hearing at least one track from Japan tonight, Mayuko ...
Avatar 7:48pm northguineahills:

@James: /rupture is in the middle of sabbatical from WFMU to write a book on global club culture, w/ an emphasis on hiphop, it should be out in a year or two. I also believe David Thompkins did a book on global hiphop 10 years ago.
Avatar 7:48pm ndbob:

@Mayuko sounds interesting!
Avatar 7:51pm Mayuko:

Uh oh, Gary! But I'm sure you wouldn't pick one that embarrasses me, haha.
Avatar 7:51pm tim abdellah:

Great set, Gary - Hi Everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Gary:

Oh, I dunno, Mayuko -- I have fairly questionable taste :) ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Gary:

Avatar 7:58pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Gary! catch the rest on the archive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Gary:

Have a great night, Bob!
Avatar 8:02pm Mayuko:

haha! well I'm curious to know what people think of it anyway. It must sound very different to Japanese than to people from other countries. And I might be over-thinking and too judgmental about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm steve:

its pizza time... great show so far!
  8:09pm Dean:

Please do spell out the details of the book you recommend.
Avatar 8:09pm coelacanth:

greetings Gary; Bodegatrons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Gary:

Howdy, Coelacanth! I'll get right on it, Dean ... save me a slice, Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Gary:

Ordering info for the Norient book I mentioned: norient.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Gary:

@Mayuko -- I'm curious to see if you'll like what I'm going to play from Japan. It's not anyone super-hip like 54-71, it's a fairly mainstream rapper :)
  8:19pm Dean:

Thank you! And dang it, the campus music library doesn't hold it, but we have the first Norient title. I have made a purchase recommendation!
Avatar 8:21pm Mayuko:

I like this Hong Kong stuff! See, other Asians countries are doing much better job!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Gary:

Awesome, Dean! I seriously don't think I'm overselling it -- not if you love contemporary international pop & hip hop
Avatar 8:22pm carol:

i like Little Albert!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Gary:

Carol, I have good news for you ... click on this! littlealbert.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Gary:

I am embarrassed to admit that I played this very Yukka Shahin track before ... but I can't help myself
Avatar 8:24pm carol:

This Yukka Shahin is great too
Avatar 8:26pm tim abdellah:

I know you played Shadia Mansour last week, but I would certainly be happy to hear more of her!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Gary:

Hmm ... might have to start takin requests ... I'll see what I can fit in!
Avatar 8:27pm northguineahills:

There is good hiphop from Japan, but the only stuff I own is instrumental Japanese hiphop on labels like 'Mo Wax and Ninja Tune.
Avatar 8:30pm spodiodi:

I'd like to hear some Vatican hip-hop.
Avatar 8:30pm tim abdellah:

Wa 3liiiikum Salaaaaaaaaaaaaaam! Thx Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Gary:

"Vatican Rap" sounds like a job for Tom Leher
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm listener james from westwood:

Sounding great at the halfway mark! And I think I still know all the words to Lehrer's "Vatican Rag."
Avatar 8:32pm Mayuko:

@northguineahills like Nujabes? did he have something from ninja tune?
Avatar 8:32pm hyde:

really late. hope there's some hipping and hopping left.
Avatar 8:33pm carol:

i love this! i think palestinian hip hop is my jam. or one of my jams anyway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Gary:

How about we go for another hour and a half, just for you, Hyde?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Gary:

Then this is the book for you, Carol -- I just picked it up a week or so ago myself: www.amazon.com...
Avatar 8:35pm northguineahills:

@Mayuko: I'd have to dig through my vinyl collection. It's been a few years since I've listened to them. (It took me 8 years to listen to my vinyl collection the last time I did so in alphabetical order).
Avatar 8:37pm hyde:

@ngh that is amazing
Avatar 8:37pm carol:

Avatar 8:37pm spodiodi:

northguineahills: impressive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Ike:

Hey, a mention of Sripraphai and Thailand's Center Point. I like both of them. I went back to Sripraphai recently and it was still very good, but I like Khao Kang even better.
Avatar 8:41pm Mayuko:

@northguineahills I'm absolutely ignorant about J hip-hop because the stuff from the mainstream I heard were just awful to me and been staying away from the entire genre. but there must be good stuff if it's instrumental! Let me know when you spend the next 8+ years with your collection and find your favs out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Gary:

Mayuko, do you like Rip Slyme? 54-71? Dragon Ash?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Gary:

Avatar 8:45pm Mayuko:

nooooo, no Dragon Ash! Nor Rip Slyme. I don't know 54-71 so that would be cool! haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Gary:

OMG, I have to play you 54-71 now!
Avatar 8:49pm Mayuko:

oh, this is actually interesting. he's not just a copy cat. phew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Gary:

LOL ... maybe I will now NOT play the mainstream rapper I was gonna play :)
Avatar 8:50pm northguineahills:

@Mauko: I'll get back to you, I still like that music but's it's been a while since I djed it, the names will come back to me soon. I'm not even including my favorite avant turntablilists Otomo Yoshihide & Toshio Kajiwara.
Avatar 8:50pm Mayuko:

I thought I could only survive Schadarapa.
Avatar 8:56pm Mayuko:

I should go look into 54-71 some more. It was actually very interesting. Thank you Gary, to release me from my traumatic experiences of J-hiphop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Gary:

Here are all of 54-71's albums, but I don't know if they are still available for DL -- let me know if not, and I'll repost them! bodegapop.blogspot.com...
Avatar 8:59pm Mayuko:

Haha, the cover already tells so much about them! the DL link seems to be not working, tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Gary:

Okay, I'll have to fix it ... I'll let you know when it's back up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Liz Berg:

Loving this show, Gary! Also now a big fan of 54-71.
Avatar 9:03pm Mayuko:

yay!! thanks Gary!
Avatar 9:06pm northguineahills:

Thanks, time for dinner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm Gary:

Liz! Howdy! Okay, now I definitely gotta get those albums back up on the blog ... night, NGH!
Avatar 9:26pm tim abdellah:

This is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Gary:

Tim, I can't tell if that's Shadia or not, and there's nothing in the metadata saying who it is ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Uncle Michael:

I need a bigger subwoofer in my Escalade for tonight's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Gary:

It's Escaladee's night, UM!
Avatar 9:32pm tim abdellah:

Reverbnation see it's Shadia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Doug Schulkind:

My subwoofer is a rottweiler/shepherd mix, with maybe a little mastiff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Gary:

I'm feeling a little mastiff myself -- been sitting all day ... *stretches*
Avatar 9:45pm spodiodi:

lol Doug & Gary
Avatar 9:58pm hyde:

thanks Gary!
Avatar 9:59pm Mayuko:

Thank you Gary!
