Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Don't think I've ever heard Chelsea Dagger all the way through. Fans of 29 other hockey teams tend to hate this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm efd:

I feel like I've heard that Fratellis song in so many commercials (or maybe just MLB Network promos?) and never knew what it was.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Mike East:

Danko! right on.
Avatar 12:32pm Spaniel:

Friday is always crunch time at work so usually listening and enjoying but not always commenting. Enjoyed the anthem, and the recent Stanley cup and NBA championship anthems. I wonder how the protocol of whether or not it's ok to yell during the anthem got started. Seems very geographically dependent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Doug Schulkind:

But must we "sip" the wine? Guzzle maybe?
Avatar 12:35pm hyde:

dang, i haven't heard this song in a LONG time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah, cheering the SSB is a Blackhawks thing...for better or worse.

Hi Mike. Hi Spaniel.

Go for it, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Mike East:

I'd advise against that, Doug. I think Rick's got the right idea. Though whether he followed his own advice could be debatable.
Avatar 12:37pm Holly in NC:

I really like the Moles' version of Going Down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Uncle Michael:

Which song, hyde?
Avatar 12:39pm hyde:

the Jeff Beck thing. sounds good, but i haven't heard this in 30+ years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Mike East:

and by the way, Uncle Michael - I don't make my own granola, but its been on my mind for a while. A coworker does and we have an ongoing granola discussion happening. my brand is Bare Naked Fruit & Nut variety.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Uncle Michael:

It's easy to make. I cookie sheet nets me two quarts.

Os Progtantes.
Avatar 12:42pm hyde:

@Mike East there's a great + easy granola recipe in the cookbook "A Real American Breakfast" by Cheryl + Bill Jamison. used to make it all the time, not sure why i stopped.
Avatar 12:42pm Spaniel:

UM, yeah, it was the first time i saw, they seem to choose the singers well to belt out over it. kind of interesting and unique

yeah, i want to make granola too. just don't add raisins until the end (they'll get rock hard)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Uncle Michael:

Mine has toasted rolled oats, toasted sliced almonds, cinnamon, honey and oil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Mike East:

I'll make it happen. Just need a bit of motivation.
  12:47pm Peter & Sarah:

Hi Mike. Great playlist again. This one's a bit odd...I thought it was a lost 'Yes' track before I looked. Ouch! Heavy influence or plagiarism?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Uncle Michael:

Heavy Plagerfluence!

Hi P&S.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Rich in Washington:

I wanna get as many family reunions over with before the election cycle starts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Listener Scott:

I too was waiting for Starship Trooper to blast through that track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Uncle Michael:

Hi Rich. It's funny...politics isn't a problem in my clan we skew entirely from center-left to conspiracy-whacko-left.
  12:57pm Peter & Sarah:

I'm not normally a fan of Bowie, but he did a lovely version of this in the early 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Listener Scott:

I found my birth family (families actually) last year. Both families turned out to be fairly large. So my appearance triggered a few family reunions. Pretty amazing to suddenly be part of a bigger thing like that. With people who kind of look like me at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Uncle Michael:

I need to find that, P&S.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Uncle Michael:

That must have been very stimulating, Scott.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Listener Scott:

Politics on mother's side fall on both sides, but mother's politics (and cultural tastes) identical to mine. Politics on father's side skew left like me. Everyone on father's side is a string musician.
Avatar 1:01pm northguineahills:

Reminds me of the Caravan marathon....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Uncle Michael:

Paul Whiteman commissioned Rhapsody in Blue and Gershwin is playing the piano on it.

Hi NGH...who did the Caravan Marathon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Listener Scott:

I played violin between ages 8-10 and was pretty good. I chose sports though. But my birth father and I are going to Maine Fiddle Camp in August, which should be something else. He goes every year. I just picked up violin again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Uncle Michael:

very cool!
Avatar 1:05pm northguineahills:

That's a good question, I believe it was about four years ago. It was either Doug or Kurt, or neither. I suppose I could ask either or just do a playlist search.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm efd:

The Bowie version of "Wild Is The Wind" is on Station To Station. I always thought it was his song... he certainly makes it his own on that album.
1:06pm Jeff g. back from eye doc, still dilated:

How do.

(That Bowie mentioned above is on Station to Station.)
Avatar 1:07pm hyde:

i hope it was a marathon of the song Caravan, not the band Caravan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Uncle Michael:

Oh. I have that album.

I've thought about a Caravan thing...glad to know it's been done...before I do it.

How many centimeters, Jeff? How far apart are the contractions?
  1:09pm Peter & Sarah:

Paul Whiteman was the biggest selling recording artist of the 1920s. Who knew?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Listener Scott:

This version is making me imagine a version of Woody Allen's Manhattan done with cartoon mice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Uncle Michael:

That's an amazing idea, Scott.

Yes, Whiteman was the biggest star of his day. A true monster.
  1:11pm Peter & Sarah:

Gave Bing Crosby his break, amoung others.
  1:12pm Dean:

Beg to differ. I'd love a marathon of the band Caravan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Uncle Michael:

Father's Day tribute...right here.
  1:14pm Peter & Sarah:

@Dean. Me too. Love that band.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Uncle Michael:

I don't bag...I mulch. Three hours was a new record.
  1:22pm Listener Robert:

3 hrs. was record for fast, or slow? Seriously, how much acreage we talking about?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

Fast. The mowable portion is 3.5 acres.
  1:23pm Listener Robert:

And is it level enough that we can put in goal posts?
  1:23pm Sarah & Peter:

Ha ha - I had exactly the same thought Doug - oud = food...I'm off to the kitchen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Uncle Michael:

Ground is cheap in Kansas. It costs more time than money.

I once fancied my own softball diamond.
  1:24pm Listener Robert:

3.5 acres? Never mind goal posts, we're talking holes & flag sticks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Uncle Michael:

Plus 2.5 more covered by woods, buildings or gravel.
  1:26pm johnk77:

  1:31pm Listener Robert:

As I child I wanted to get into rocketry, but after I got into pyrotechnics I wound up making skyrockets the last part of the art to work on. There are just so many things that can go wrong compared to aerial shells, for instance. I've yet to consistently get into the sweet spot between motors blowing up & just fizzling, and when they do fly, not becoming audience-seeking missiles.

  1:33pm Peter & Sarah:

Hm. When I was 15 my cousin and I used to muck around with gunpowder...making fireworks...until the police came to visit. The 70s in Britain was not tolerant about making bombs at home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Uncle Michael:

The guy I know is Billy Burk. I'm not sure when he was out with Cody...mid-to-late '70s, maybe.
  1:34pm Dean:

Do you know Joshua Adams, who mixes Sandy Bull, Hamza El Din inspiration with Free Jazz approach? (He plays a Marrocan lute called Goumbri) Not for everyone, but if you are open fo it, it is really hynotizing. Joshua Adams Information Society from Chicago - great group - killer drummer.
  1:44pm Sarah & Peter:

Hey, no problem Stanley - you were right...."Peter & Sarah" is Peter (a bloke) and "Sarah & Peter" is Sarah (a lady) ! ha ha ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Uncle Michael:

No Guido...I will delve into it.
  1:47pm Stanley:

I suppose mucking around with gunpowder sounded like a boy's thing. We were a lot freer to experiment in the seventies
  1:48pm johnk77:

so i played an udu

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

We did similar at boarding school. We made our own gunpowder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

Kudos to Kodos.
  1:50pm Dean:

Guido, I think you mean Joshua Abrams in Chicago? Didn't know he plays that instrument. But I do know that Sam Shalabi in Montreal plays something of the sort. (One of his best records is called "Luteness.")
  1:51pm Sarah & Peter:

Yes, as a girl I missed out on those gunpowder experiments. Never too late though...
  1:52pm Stanley:

@UM I hope you didn't try smoking it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Uncle Michael:

No, we just blew out the windows of the auditorium with it. Though there was smoke, as I recall.
  1:53pm Peter & Sarah:

What did I miss...I was in the kitchen making quiche.
So is that straight? P + S is me, Peter. S + P is Sarah (the artist formerly known as Listen With Sarah).
Avatar 1:53pm Brian in UK:

@Guido I saw Joshua Abrams supporting Noura Mint Seymali recently.Takes a while to adjust. Yes, great drummer. Always watch the drummer.
Avatar 1:55pm Brian in UK:

I thought he said a Gimli at the show but that's a dwarf.
  1:55pm Peter & Sarah:

Yep, we were more free to experiment in the 70s....but for those incidents with bombs in pubs in B'ham...put the kaibosh on buying saltpetre freely from garden shops.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Guido from Cologne:

I loved how he re-adjustes the drumset while playing, even while playing in the forefront. This is a truly relaxed approach. I would love to be as relaxed myself.

@UncleMichael How did you know I was droppin' by? RE: This set, so far. Yeah!.
  2:12pm Peter & Sarah:

Uncle Mike...this is a great set. Thanks very much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Uncle Michael:

I'm glad to not be the only one having fun!
  2:13pm johnk77:

@um thanx
for righteous selecting
for the people
Avatar 2:13pm Sean B.:

Northern Soul, Southern Soul, Blue Eyed Soul; It's all soul to me when I feel it.
2:15pm Jeff g. back from eye doc:

What's a good working definition of Northern Soul, please?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

Obscure Motown-inspired soul popular in the north of England a decade after it was recorded.
  2:19pm Peter & Sarah:

You just answered a question I was about to ask...what does Northern Soul mean in the US, 'cos I thought it was a British thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Uncle Michael:

North of England...American records...fast...four on the floor beat.
Avatar 2:20pm Sean B.:

@UncleM Killin' it. Nice. Thanx.
  2:22pm johnk77:

did the live djs
in uk really speed up
the discs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

This doc is the best explanation I can offer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm doctorjazz:

Great set, digging whatever soul it is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

I think they did speed them up sometimes. I think DJs still play with speed.
Avatar 2:24pm Sean B.:

The Wolfman never messed with that stuff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Guido from Cologne:

It's debatable if Northern Soul is a musical style as such.
Though your hear it after seconds when you are into it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

I meant dancefloor DJs.
  2:25pm Dean:

And Kurt Gottschalk. He messes with rpm, too.
2:28pm Jeff g. back from eye doc:

Aha. Thanks!
Avatar 2:29pm ndbob:

I've always had mixed feelings about Northern soul - lots of records I like, but many I think are pretty poor - @UM agreed
Avatar 2:30pm chromaphone:

Look forward to checking out the doc, thanks.
Avatar 2:31pm Sean B.:

Ok @UM Although In poor taste, you got my joke; One of the greats nevertheless; If not such maybe the pinnacle. Pretty much one of the DJ's that were the soundtrack to my childhood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Guido from Cologne:

It is part of the art of DeJaying to improvise the sequencing that makes even the most rediculous singles come over as absolutely awesome masterworks. Very often poor songs with great session musicians making the best of it. Often enough great song as well.
  2:35pm Peter & Sarah:

Tara a bit. Dinner time. Great show. Hear you next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks P&S...see you next time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

Junk drawer set alert!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Uncle Michael:

I wonder what the cutoff age for knowing what True Confessions magazine is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Guido from Cologne:

Brook Benton: anyway a pioneer in singing "ecology anthems" - or what it should have become.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Goyim in the AM:

I was born at the end of the '60s and my mother used to snatch it out of my hand at the grocery store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Uncle Michael:

There was always a woman in her underwear making an escape from a dank basement on the cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Guido from Cologne:

I must have that Traffic track and I'm irritated why it passed my attention ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Uncle Michael:

Put some ointment on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Doug Schulkind:

Gotta shuffle of to Workalo. Have a great last six minutes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Doug. Take some ointment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Goyim in the AM:

Ointment for EVERYONE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Uncle Michael:

Unguent for Peter Stormare.
Avatar 2:57pm ndbob:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Goyim in the AM:

Bad news coming down the wire that Phil Austin of Firesign Theater has died. :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Uncle Michael:

  2:59pm Stanley:

Loved the show thanks UM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Guido from Cologne:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Uncle Michael:

That's terrible news, Goyim. :(
  3:00pm Dean:

Bad news, indeed. He was 74, still a kid.
  3:02pm Dean:

I wish some of the things I know as of the last few minutes were wrong.
3:02pm Jeff g. back from eye doc:

Thanks for the wonderful show, @UM. Looking forward to some Firesign next week...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Guido from Cologne:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Uncle Michael:
