Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Happy new year Michael!
Love the GIF-art!
Avatar 11:59am duke:

OK, now I'm going to spend the next hour following the little balls on the gif.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

Hypnotic ... if I buy 20 cases of Amway at the end of the show I know UM's hidden a message in that GIF.

@kat very nice!

Wrestle poodles AND WIN.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Uncle Michael:

I'll go with that explanation, Kat.
Avatar 12:12pm duke:

Was that Brute Force cut sponsored by Sofa King? Remember their prices are Sofa King low.

I'll show myself out
Avatar 12:12pm kat330:

@Duke: Thanks! Just my infamous birthday ditty altered for a different celebration.
Avatar 12:13pm V Priceless:

Ha @ Brian in UK!

@ duke - was wondering about that
Avatar 12:13pm kat330:

Thanks, Bob! Hope you had a blooming great holiday in So IN!

@UM: Did you ever roast that turkey breast?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Uncle Michael:

Not yet, Kat.

Bob Hope?
Avatar 12:15pm ndbob:

@key Yep! slow but nice - and you?
Avatar 12:15pm kat330:

Heh, yeah, I saw that -- and I believe I've done that before when writing to ndbob.
Avatar 12:16pm V Priceless:

just deep-fried a whole turkey with an indoor deep fryer - came out juicy and fabulous - 13lbs in 47 minutes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Uncle Michael:

I might sous vide mine for about 47 hours.
Avatar 12:17pm kat330:

Philo and I had a quiet stay-at-home holiday this year. His job forces him to take vacation days for those not already paid holidays during the final week+ at year's end. Sometimes we go away -- like to New Orleans -- but if he can work instead to save the days, we do that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Parq:

Happy New Year, Uncle M. That's a nifty gif of my mind you've put up. (I suspect that a lot of us would say the same.) Sorry I missed that sensational Dan track, but wha'ya'gonna do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Guido from Cologne:

Nice song Kat!
Avatar 12:18pm ndbob:

@kat i meant as I typed badly lol
Avatar 12:18pm kat330:

@priceless: I hear tell those deep fryers can be dangerous.

This set is shaping up royally.
Avatar 12:20pm V Priceless:

NP - it's all good! Not one of their better efforts, IMO.
Avatar 12:20pm kat330:

You could work down the rung of office holders and play XTC's delightful "Mayor of Simpleton."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Doug Schulkind:

Wait. Is today Six Kings Day?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm listener james from westwood:

Six kings beat a straight flush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Parq:

Today's my first day back after an extended break too. I can relate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Rich in Washington:

I too am in the home stretch of a lengthy holiday. Back to work on Monday :(
Avatar 12:30pm kat330:

Best use of "abattoir" in a song?
Avatar 12:31pm Brian in UK:

@kat you read my mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm listener james from westwood:

That is a lovely break, UM. I've only had one job in house for the past week, plus my clients seem to have bosses who believe in four-day weekends, so I've been on comparative vacation of late.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Uncle Michael:

I think so, Kat.
Avatar 12:32pm kat330:

@Brian: I've been accused of that. Happy 2015 from across the pond!
Avatar 12:32pm Brian in UK:

The Butchers Boy always has a rough time in Murder Ballads.
Avatar 12:33pm Brian in UK:

Thanks and straight back to you. Good health is the best we can wish each other.
Avatar 12:34pm kat330:

IIRC, also a pointedly rough time in "Game of Thrones" -- yes, we finally succumbed and got the first 2 seasons out on library loan.
Avatar 12:34pm kat330:

@BUK: Most certainly at my age it is! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Uncle Michael:

I've had no luck finding lyrics for the Doll By Doll album. I'd like a clear reading.
Avatar 12:36pm kat330:

Raving a cappella, cool!
Avatar 12:40pm Brian in UK:

A threat from Cliff is like being tickled by the monster in John Carpenter's Dark Star.
Avatar 12:40pm kat330:

At least found lyrics for DxD's "Main Travelled Roads" here: tabs.ultimate-guitar.com...
Avatar 12:46pm kat330:

Do you have facial hair, UM?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm listener james from westwood:

Hang in there, UM. I irrationally disliked my mom's dad for the first 4 years of my life. Zero idea why, as the man was a prince and everything you'd want in a granddad.
Avatar 12:50pm kat330:

3-2-1 pie dough is easy and rather surefire.
Avatar 12:52pm kat330:

Which is three parts flour, two parts fat, and one part liquid. Here for variations and tips: allrecipes.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Uncle Michael:

Yes to facial hair...but so does her father.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Mike East:

I think I should stop being afraid of baking and just go for it. I love pie crust. and bread. and cookies.
Avatar 12:53pm kat330:

@UM: Well, she sees him every day and is used to his countenance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 12:56pm kat330:

@Mike: I don't really do baking either, mainly because I don't want to routinely keep flour and sugar around the house. Once upon a time I'd make little pecan pies (using muffin pan), and that crust was something as simple as flour + cream cheese. Probably some salt and sugar, too, don't recall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Uncle Michael:

I found 43-2-1. Thanks for the tip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Uncle Michael:

not 43!
Avatar 12:59pm still b/p:

Musicians at a holiday house party a couple of weeks ago were playing dixieland and standards. When a couple of new players sat in and launched into a cumbia, I was full of cheer.
Avatar 1:00pm kat330:

43 cups of flour would be a tad too much, yes.
  1:01pm holland oats:

El Nillsono!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Mike East:

@kat - I usually have flour and sugar around, but my fears are more that when I cook, I tend to be more artistic than scientific, which doesn't really fly when you're baking.
Avatar 1:03pm kat330:

@Mike: Exactly, thus the formula of 3-2-1. Trust that your sweet toddler, Lucy, had a grand holiday? ☼
Avatar 1:05pm still b/p:

He sang the "worship" part with a kind of going-into-town-to-gamble-and-drink gusto.
Avatar 1:07pm hyde:

we're talking baking? well, flour was on sale at the market so me I just came back with ten pounds...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Mike East:

I'm gonna give it a shot, Kat (321). Yes, it was essentially her first Xmas and she was beside herself at the sight of her presents. Her big gift was a toy kitchen play set so she can cook like her poppa....took me three days to put the damn thing together, but now she tells people "poppa make it for me"
Avatar 1:10pm kat330:

@hyde: You just might have 43 cups then.

@Mike: Awww! I fondly remember my easy-bake oven with a light bulb as an energy source. The link I first posted up top here has a pic of me a bit older than Lucy (and probably already using my easy-bake ;).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Mike East:

very nice kat. Merry new year to and Philo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Stevel:

The Twitty/Lynn song is like any great car crash. Just can't look away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Parq:

Stevel, that's the perfect way to put it. Exactly.
Avatar 1:17pm hyde:

this set is aces
Avatar 1:19pm ndbob:

great one here
Avatar 1:19pm kat330:

Melody of Golden Ring is very close to "Long Black Veil."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, hyde.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm listener james from westwood:

Holy hot damn, this set. All this and Lee & Nancy, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Stanley:

Good question
Avatar 1:23pm still b/p:

My weekly trash day is Thursday so the holidays preempted two of 'em. Who's gonna take my 3 weeks of garbage out?
Avatar 1:24pm kat330:

Hey, still, we're on the same schedule, but they just move it up to Fridays in Knob Knee. Not my worry anyway since Philo takes that on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Stanley:

This set is fab
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Uncle Michael:

I did a duets set about 13 months ago and this morning I realized I was about to use two of the same songs...and scrambled. Oh, dread.
Avatar 1:26pm kat330:

Another good question: What's creating methane on Mars? apod.nasa.gov...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Stanley:

still b/p's uncollected garbage?
Avatar 1:30pm Brian in UK:

I got the 'It Takes Two' three CD comp for Christmas. Great duets.

Stanley, it has Football Crazy on it.
Avatar 1:30pm kat330:

@Stanley: Ha! Nah, I believe Beefheart knew the answer. It's gotta be those "Big Eyed Beans from Venus."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Stanley:

Oh my-o-my!
Avatar 1:31pm Brian in UK:

  1:32pm Dean:

You drive a Leaf, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm listener james from westwood:

Oh, man, I know the gas/trunk feeling, and I've had this car for ages, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Stanley:

Brian - you mean he kicked his wife out of bed and thought it was a goal?
Avatar 1:34pm kat330:

@UM: Keep your mind and memory nimble with crossword puzzles, my unsolicited advice for the New Year. As for me, I'm determined to learn Morse Code after seeing "Interstellar" on Christmas Day.
Avatar 1:34pm Brian in UK:

The problem is when you remember what you went to get but cannot remember what to do with it.

Ah Laddie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Uncle Michael:

It's scary...so I joke about it.
Avatar 1:39pm kat330:

This is quite different from "A Summer Song."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah...very under-appreciated guys are C&J.
Avatar 1:41pm still b/p:

Oh, I hate the name lost suddenly, maddeningly, inexplicably, and more frequently now, when you're in situation where you should introduce someone to someone else. So you dodge it or just don't try and hope for the best. Name returns to brain 1 to 24 hours later.
Avatar 1:42pm kat330:

As so many young teenaged girls of the time, I had the 45 of Summer Song and swooned as I listened. Saw Peter & Gordon live, along with Sonny & Cher and Herman's Hermits -- what a bill!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Guido from Cologne:

Cooll! Electric Banana!
Knew about this incarnation but never heard it.
Avatar 1:48pm kat330:

@still: Doesn't happen with names for me, but I do stumble on the occasional precise word, like when I referred to "compound" in a recipe to UM as "emulsion." At least I knew it didn't sound right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

Interesting that your brain was able to find aother word that mapped to the concept.
Avatar 1:51pm still b/p:

As long as you don't say "kerosene" for "condensed milk" or "vulcanize" for "lightly brown."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Guido from Cologne:

I'm out of words and out of names so often.
I hate it!
Avatar 1:52pm kat330:

Compound in cooking terms is something I only learned of in the last decade and a half or so. If I have a name-cross problem, it's usually about a more recent addition to my vocabulary. I've never been a cookbook reader.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

I just call everyone Max.
Avatar 1:53pm kat330:

@Guido: How many languages are you fluent in? Bilingualism is another great hedge against normal senility.

Wow, the Skull Snaps! And not "It's a New Day", either!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Uncle Michael:

Not a lot of Skull Snaps to choose from!
  2:09pm Dean:

Hey, Curtis Mayfield covered King of Fuh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm efd:

And the Dirtbombs covered that Curtis Mayfield song (apropos of almost nothing to almost everyone).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Uncle Michael:

Funny you should mention that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Uncle Michael:

I'm having an EFD NYE hangover dance party on HDT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm efd:

I feel like I've still got a NYE hangover, and I didn't even drink!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Uncle Michael:

We're really getting on the dance floor next set...I'm sure you played some of them but I haven't read through the whole playlist,
Avatar 2:17pm kat330:

Anyone on the board familiar with blues clubs c. 1992 in Chicago? [yes, a memory gap-lapse I'm trying to bridge]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Guido from Cologne:

A term "Electric Banana" appears in the lyrics of Donovan's "Yellow Mellow".

In his autobiography Donovan explained that the phrase "electrical banana" was a reference to a yellow-coloured vibrator." (from Wikipedia)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Uncle Michael:

Maybe...what's the question?
Avatar 2:23pm kat330:

Well, I already did the online searching and came up with bupkis, at least I don't *think* the club I went to on the north side was called B.L.U.E.S.

In Spring '92 I went to some small club and saw Albert Collins -- I THINK, that's right and not Albert King (I know, for shame on me, but I have a good excuse for back at that dark time). Wanted to remember for sure so I could tell the local Kentuckiana Blues Society prez about it without some obvious inaccuracy.
Avatar 2:23pm still b/p:

A naming game/direction, of course, that Steely Dan played their own version of, Guido.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm listener james from westwood:

w00t! Saturday Night Fever soundtrack!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

kat, there absolutely was a club by that name.

would that make a dj-premium theme:
bands named after vibrators?
  2:26pm Crazy Dancin' Fool:

With all due respect to the Bee Gee's flawless production, the ultimate version of this song is by a pre-CHIC "The Big Apple Band": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJhyd4fJtas
Thrillingly intense.
Avatar 2:26pm kat330:

@Guido: The local mythology around that lyric was it was some psychedelic drug ref and that "smoking banana peel" would make you hallucinate. My ex-boyfriend at the time fashioned a shoebox +bulb to make a plastic banana that lit up. Ah, innocence!

A collection called "Everybody Hum Along."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Uncle Michael:

Will check it out, CDF
Avatar 2:27pm kat330:

@UM: I know for sure there is one *now*, but couldn't confirm if it was in operation in 1992. You know that for sure? And whether it's at all possible Albert King (who died in December that same year) would have performed there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Uncle Michael:

It was there in the mid-'80s and it's quite possible that he played there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm listener james from westwood:

My guess on this Hava'ed up track was the Salsoul Orchestra.
Avatar 2:32pm kat330:

@UM: Ah, OK then and thanks! Don't want to look too foolish before the dude who said he's playing one of my own blues tracks on his show this evening. He mentioned his fave concert was Willie Dixon at the Wise Fools Pub in Chicago before and around that time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Uncle Michael:

I hope my broken brain remembers this right!
Avatar 2:34pm kat330:

Well, I'm pretty certain the word "Blues" something or other was the club's name, but didn't quite remember it as JUST that and like it was an acronym.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

It opened in 1985.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Stanley:

Was this ever a studio version? I've only heard live versions recently but my memory tells me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Uncle Michael:

It's not *really* live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Stanley:

Then this must be the version we heard back in the day
Avatar 2:40pm Brian in UK:

Cookin' show Uncle, now I gotta get cooking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Uncle Michael:

I believe so.
Avatar 2:41pm kat330:

@UM: OK, then. It's location is as I recall and the name's close enough, so the date was all I needed to be more sure. Again, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Guido from Cologne:

Love this!

Avatar 2:44pm kat330:

Thanks, Dean. I also tried like the devil searching for performance dates of both Albert's from '92, but had no luck in that either. My first memory was it was Albert King, so I'm going to stick with that.

Albert King performed there in March '92: http://screencast.com/t/3P2OH5dfgN

Albert King is my main man.

AHHH, excellent! I can always count on the listeners of FMU/GTDR to answer any puzzle! :)
  2:49pm Dean:

That same weekend "Kansas City's Psychowelders" played the Avalon. Know them, UM?
Avatar 2:50pm kat330:

Aha, and the "etc." DOES make it clear it's the club in question. I knew it had more than one syllable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Uncle Michael:

well done, Dean!

Name rings a bell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for hanging out today, everyone.
Avatar 2:52pm kat330:

Speaking of "ask and ye shall receive" through Internet info: I was concerned about how long "Interstellar" is, and so I put in search terms for "best time for bathroom break" and, sure enough, there was a discussion forum about it. And the info was solid, too, as I found out firsthand.
  2:53pm Dean:

For an abbreviation, "etc." sure has a lot of syllables.

Speaking of Chicago in March, I'll be there this year at the end of the month (23 years to the day, in fact, that King played). Any recommendations for good clubs along the lines of Empty Bottle?
Avatar 2:53pm kat330:

Thank *you* for hosting such a fine hang-out, UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Rich in Washington:

that whole Love, Peace & Poetry series is amazing. Why don't I own it all?

Have a great 2015, everyone.
Avatar 2:57pm kat330:

@Dean: Sorry I can't return the favor. Haven't lived in Chicago since the end of '92.
