that Jeckyll guy is such a wuss.

"sort of" watching that game was the way to go, because that thing sounded like an atrocity. I stayed at work and just listened to the radio feed, and I'm sure glad I didn't leave early to watch that thing.

@Gary: check out this minor internet music hit that played those world cup days here in Brazil, it's a funk carioca sung in german http://youtu.be/Xyk1dMLSG20

Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of terrific WFMU programming, I urge you to tune in tomorrow, 9a-12p for Joe McGasko's Surface Noise program. Here is the blurb:

Twilight Nuages
Thursday, July 10th, 9am - Noon
on Surface Noise with Joe McGasko
Back in 1977, a high school music teacher named Bill Last joined forces with some of his students to record an LP in his parents' basement. Charming, poignant, and often lovely, that rare private-press album has just been reissued by the Folk Evaluation label. Renewed interest has motivated the group to get back together for a few reunion gigs, and today on Surface Noise, we'll talk with Bill and play some exclusive tracks recorded at the band's first reunion gig last month. Fans of Milos Foreman's Taking Off and the Langley Schools Music Project would do well to tune in.

I featured the 1977 album four years ago in my Mining the Audio Motherlode column in WFMU's blog, and lo and behold, the band is back together!

Read my comments from April 2010: blog.wfmu.org...
Avatar 7:52pm
Holly in NC:

@Doug - Thanks for heads up! I rarely get to listen to my beloved Joe in real time now that he's a morning guy, but I just might be able to catch some of tomorrow's show. Everything is better in real time, when possible ;-)

Yeah... what Holly said about the archives. I heard this Antropoloops song in this very show's archive from a few weeks back, downloaded the whole collection and it's still blowing my mind. Funny thing is, nobody else on woof moo has even played it yet.

Holly in NC:

Oh heck, must go wish Nick a happy birthday!

Also want to point out that Twilight Nuages = Connecticut. Connecticut has birthed a surprising number of excellent private press lps given its (sadly true) rep as a generally uncool state.

Pepe's Pizza = one of few remaining reasons why Connecticut exists :-)

Hi Jill B.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm

Mais oui, RevRab!
Avatar 8:05pm

@Holly ooooh, Frank Pepe's. That's good stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm

One of the other few reasons Connecticut exists is Logee's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm

Anyone know of a great international Disco compilation out there? Seems like there's GOTTA be one, but I haven't run across it, if so ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm

I confess I had to Google Logee's just now
Avatar 8:11pm
Holly in NC:

@Gary - not truly international , but I've really really been enjoying the recently released Tropical Disco Hustle comp, as well as "further explorations" recommended by the compiler. Have to run so can't dig up links, but Google will help you. Or hit me up later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
Doug Schulkind:

There are African disco comps, like Lagos Disco Inferno. Very tasty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm

Will definitely search for Tropical Disco Hustle, thanks, Holly! And, Doug, that album is wonderful, yes -- we'll be hearing from it later this evening!

Yo dere, Gary -- made it! Just got back from the store (and the bar), ready to whip up a batch of enchiladas w/cheese & Walla Walla onions (whatta whatta?).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm

Simon! I'm waitin on salad, myself ... I *want* enchiladas, tho
Avatar 8:31pm

Holly, What's in your mayonnaise? Or is it just great 'cuz it's fresh?

pss, Have you ridden the WSF Walla Walla? Is it still in service? It's the one with fake wood formica tables that seat 8-10 and the 1974 earth-tones color scheme and sounds like Gene Krupa on acid when throttled up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm

Howdy, Droll! Welcome to the mix!
Doug Schulkind:

Hey, my plej, Gary!
Avatar 8:35pm

Gary, Been lurking most of the show. Before it was known as lurking we called it listening. I fall back on the old ways so easily.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm

1994 = first year I heard the term "lurking" in reference to hanging out online
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
pacific standard simon:

@Droll - My not-so-secret secret is that this isn't my first time on the island; a previous attempt to live here ('93-'94) met with abject failure. So, yes, I've ridden the Walla Walla many a time (with no internet!) while commuting to a job in Seattle. I believe it's still a substitute, or maybe on another route.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
pacific standard simon:

Some of the people I work with now weren't even born, then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm

Am I wrong to love this remix as much as the original? Is it blasphemy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
pacific standard simon:

See Uncle Michael's comments regarding "no guilty pleasures".
Jill B.:

Has anyone out there ever made soy yogurt successfully.
Ah, riding a ferry in Puget Sound, it does not get any better than that! The very best way to travel.....peaceful....exceptionally beautiful. Used to travel on the WSF between islands in the San Juans when I had a small business on Lopez.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm

I would be surprised if Holly hasn't made soy yogurt!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
pacific standard simon:

@Jill -- so true... San Francisco still has a few ferries, NY too, but nothing compares to the WSF.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm

My GF and I have ridden the ferry from just south of our apartment in Astoria/LIC to DUMBO and lower Manhattan. It also goes to Williamsburg, but it's so easy to get to Williamsburg on the subway we can't quite justify the (more expensive) ferry ride
Avatar 8:48pm

whoa, that Sony tape link is actually months old. I miss everything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm

That scene at the beginning of Pal Joey (released in '57?) where Frank Sinatra steps off the ferry boat into San Francisco always gets me right **here**.

ah, King Sunny Ade, I haven't heard this stuff in a looong time. I saw them on what I think was their first US tour at the Rusty Nail in Sunderland, Mass. It snowed a little after the show and suddenly there were 30 grown Nigerian men playing in the parking lot like little kids.
Avatar 8:57pm

Loving the show, but my butt's bed-bound. Will luxuriate in the third hour via the archive. Thanks most kindly, Gary!
Jill B.:

@PSSimon.....I know! My first WSF trip was in the 1950' when I was 11 years old We traveled out to Lopez to visit my paternal grandfather and aunt for the first time. Spent hours at Agate Beach exploring and collecting beautiful small pebbles. I loved it out there so much. I was lucky to return in 1990 to live there myself. I miss it so much. There is nothing like living on an island in Washington. Nothing!

Holly in NC:

find a wide mouth pint mason jar.
1 egg yolk (best you can find, if not local, def. cert. humanely raised & organic) Save white to make a Ramos Gin Fizz or a Pisco Sour ;-)
1 t. prepared dijon mustard
scant T. fresh lemon juice
scant T. Bragg's apple cider vinegar
1 T. whey
-- YOU CAN GET 1 T whey in under 5 minutes from draining Seven Stars Farm Organic Full Fat Plain yogurt, or your own homemade yogurt, or your homemade paneer or whatever. And no worries! 1 T. plain old water is fine too, just decreases life span & health benefits of mayo. So use that tap water if need be :-)

Throw about 1C high oleic expeller pressed safflower oil on that mess. Yo seriously, olive oil is not your friend here (becomes bitter), but neither is nasty supermarket veg oil (will kill you sooner than later)

OK. now follow instructions @ Serious Eats for how immersion blender needs to be on bottom of vessle and stay there, creating vortex. After about 30 seconds no motion & then some tilting & swirling, you will have mayo. You will know when you have mayo. NOW AND ONLY NOW add salt to taste, and adjust whatever else you want.

If you used whey not water, let sit out for about 8 hours, before tossing in fridge. You heard me! Developed probiotics increase deliciousness & overall mayo shelf life by weeks. If you used water, put in fridge immediately. Water mayo life = about 2 weeks, whey mayo = about 4 weeks. ***********IF YOU ADD RAW GARLIC TO MAKE AIOLI YOU ARE BACK DOWN TO WEEK FRIDGE LIFE BEST - BOTULISM NOT YOUR FRIEND ***********

If anyone really cares, e-mail me.

Also, at this stage in my life I am anti-soy so no, don't ask me :-)

@hyde - was it in '83-'84? Ade was on Island, and had major label backing, so I got to see him in Berkeley. We pasted dollar bills on his forehead, because we heard it was traditional!

pacific standard simon:

OK, Holly, I need to read all that in the archives when it won't mess up my enchilada instructions. ;)
