Now that's the girl for me: Brunette and fictional!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Gary:

Howdy, James! Just getting set up here ... and cooking gnocchi & broccoli simultaneously
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm listener james from westwood:

Ah, the old gnoc & broc. Well done. Was going to make Trader Joe's ravioli with veggies, but got pulled in by the TJ's bean burrito and chicken taquito combo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Gary:

My default is gnocchi and pesto -- probably not the healthiest of choices. This is the great Aiha Higurashi right now, of Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her fame
Avatar 6:54pm carol:

that trader joes gnocchi is really freaking good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm listener james from westwood:

Not bad in moderation, those two. Really well-made examples of both make it tough to be moderate!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Gary:

Good afternoon/evening, Carol!
Avatar 6:55pm carol:

hey gary and james!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Gary:

When I worked as a prep cook for a fancy Italian restaurant in San Francisco in the 80s, I made pesto from scratch -- and put it on everything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Gary:

And this here is the utterly sublime HK singer/songwriter Ketchup
Avatar 6:58pm carol:

i make huge batches of pesto in the summer and freeze it in 1/2 cup portions. and yeah it's amazing on everything
Avatar 6:58pm ndbob:

Heya Gary and everyone!
Avatar 6:58pm carol:

oh cool!!! i love ketchup! the stuff you've posted is all ive heard
Avatar 6:59pm carol:

hi ndbob!
Avatar 6:59pm ndbob:

My cooking is setting the microwave properly:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Gary:

Hey Bob!
Avatar 7:01pm glenn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm listener james from westwood:

Howdy, Carol and all!! A friend of mine grows basil (or stands back while the basil grows; it needs little prompting!) so she can freeze batches of pesto that same way. She uses ice cube trays and then thaws cubes when needed. (I do the same with unused stock.)
  7:02pm Doug Schulkind:

I was just walking my black cat under a ladder to get to the show, Gary. We're so lucky to have you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Gary:

Glenn! And Doug! So happy to see you guys!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Gary:

I had friends in Minneapolis when I lived in St Paul in the 90s whose front yard WAS basil.
Avatar 7:08pm carol:

omg i would love that! i always have a hard time growing it without it going to seed immed. this Hoàng Oanh is beautiful btw
  7:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Jeez, Oanh song into the show and you are KILLING it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Gary:

Ha ha -- Oanh likes to try
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Gary:

I'm going to go serve myself some gnocchi & brocc while this is playing, mmm ...
Avatar 7:11pm Holly in NC:

Hi Gary, Carol, ljfw, Glenn, ndbob, Doug!

I am noshing on Trader Joe's kimchee at the moment, which is surprisingly good. I added anchovies ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Gary:

Happy Wednesday, Holly!
Avatar 7:13pm carol:

hi holly! <3 anchovies!
Avatar 7:15pm ndbob:

Heya Holly!
  7:15pm Doug Schulkind:

About to bathe the whole wheat fettuccini in butternut squash sauce and toasted pignoli. I'm glad I have two ears and one mouth and not the opposite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Gary:

OMG, I want some, Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Gary:

After the Ni-Hao!, track for Doug then a track for Carol
  7:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Okay, I am plotzing, just like you knew I would.
Avatar 7:21pm Holly in NC:

There's not much I won't do for toasted pignoli. I mean, I won't trade sexual favors, but I would consider groveling on my knees, barking like a dog, cleaning your toilet, weeding your lawn, etc.
Avatar 7:23pm Holly in NC:

@Carol - yay anchovies! And yay for song Gary picked for you!
Avatar 7:29pm carol:

oh i didnt see that that was for me! thanks gary! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Gary:

Mais oui, Carol!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Gary:

The metadata is trying to say this is "Vamo Animal," But it's not. It's "Electrico."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm northguineahills:

Any Control Machete? It would fit in nicely here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Gary:

NGH! Maybe next week (will reveal next week's theme at next break)
Avatar 7:46pm Holly in NC:

@ngh, you just made me go listen to Si Señor and No se Fracasa!
Avatar 7:50pm earrie:

Hey. Music. Yay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Gary:

Yay Earrie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm northguineahills:

jajaja, Holly! que chido!

@Gary, I'll need to run in a wee bit.......jejeje.
Avatar 7:57pm Holly in NC:

Holly in NC:
I LOVE habaneros. But why the hell were they mixed in w. wood chips at a playground? I'm guessing total accident, but poor kids.

Avatar 7:58pm ndbob:

@Holly Wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Gary:

Whoa, that's horrible
Avatar 7:59pm ndbob:

Excellent first hour Gary! Catch the rest on the archive
Avatar 7:59pm hyde:

holy heck, there's already themes planned for the next three weeks of shows? dj expert mode.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Gary:

Hyde! Yeah, I freaked out a bit because of this talk I'm giving in Seattle at the end of the month. I desperately felt the need to be on top of everything. Also, I think I was procrastinating on the talk ...
Avatar 8:02pm carol:

sorry ive been away doing a pedicure but ive been listening and i just wanted to say that i love Les Rita Mitsouko! and i love Bear-Garden! one of my super fave songs is off the album you had/have up. its the one with Electro Version in parenthesis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Gary:

Happy trails, Bob!
Avatar 8:02pm hyde:

just plan the music and the talk will take care of itself, i always say
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm northguineahills:

@Holly: ok that's weird. did someone toss their salsa on the playground?.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm northguineahills:

"Unknown Rembetiko Singer " rocks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Gary:

@Carol, I found a bunch more Bear-Garden after I posted that album, and that song I just played is among that stash. But it's from a variety of different albums ... maybe I'll make a Best of out of it all and post it at some point?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Gary:

This rembetiko singer would totally be known to anyone (unlike me) who could read Greek. Alas, name didn't make it into the metadata ...
Avatar 8:06pm carol:

Avatar 8:10pm carol:

i'm really into this "oudie" buisness!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm listener james from westwood:

Killer first hour, BTW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Gary:

The artists thank you, James!
Avatar 8:15pm Holly in NC:

Loving Guitar Wolf :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Gary:

Guitar Wolf just wants to be your favorite hard rock band of all time, Holly. It's that simple!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm northguineahills:

I can read Greek names (phonetically) in the Greek alphabet, but I know nothing about the language outside of classic Greek.

Taking a stroll outside, will be back soon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Gary:

See you in a bit, NGH--enjoy the gorgeous evening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm northguineahills:

I had a Greek coworker a decade ago give me a bunch of rebetiko records that his father was getting rid of. Recorded in the 30s-50s, rereleased in the 60s, all in Greek.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm northguineahills:

(Even got some Greek Beatles recs out of the deal, and Hollywood soundtracks).
Avatar 8:22pm Holly in NC:

Veering off on wild tangent - Is anyone else upset about new Monopoly rules? The cat was bad enough (& y'all know I love cats), but codifying that stupid free parking rule, doubling Go $, etc. pisses me off. I guess I'm a reactionary fart. Don't get me started on Clue...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm northguineahills:

I still use the house rules for my Simpsons Monopoly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Gary:

@Holly, what did they get rid of for the cat again?
Avatar 8:29pm Holly in NC:

The iron.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Gary:

And, wait -- they fucked up Clue?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Gary:

I loved the iron!!!!! :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Gary:

No, your radio's not broken.
Avatar 8:31pm hyde:

me, i didn't even know they changed the monopoly rules. i learn so much on the drummer stream playlists!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm listener james from westwood:

My mom always played the shoe. I liked the dog until I started using a Jawa action figure.
Avatar 8:38pm Holly in NC:

@Gary - oh, yes. Sickening.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Gary:

OMFG. Cassandra? Really?
Avatar 8:45pm hyde:

ouch, professor plum is a dot com billionaire
Avatar 8:46pm Holly in NC:

On, the other hand, I defy you to NOT laugh at this silly thing:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Gary:

Well, that didn't work out very well :-?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Gary:

Goaty! Goes well with the "baa baa baa" chorus of this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Santos L Halper:

Pow pow pow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Gary:

Santos! Come on in and get our goat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Gary:

Next up, one of the strangest Aretha Franklin covers of all time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Santos L Halper:

Soup's on!
Avatar 8:54pm Holly in NC:

Melt Banana is meant to be jarring. Pretty sure their excellent and uncharacteristically listener friendly cover of We Will Rock You is the only song of theirs that I've played more than twice.

@Gary - re Goaty - true!
Avatar 8:54pm Holly in NC:

@Santos -

What kind of soup?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Santos L Halper:

Goat's head, natch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Gary:

I am a huge Melt Banana fan, Holly. Gonna make it my mission now to find another song you might willingly play more than once ... :)
Avatar 9:00pm Holly in NC:

@Santos :-)
@Gary, I'm open.
Avatar 9:00pm Holly in NC:

Super show Gary, will catch end via archives. xo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Gary:

Have a great night, Holly! No end in sight, just one 13th song after another into eternity
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Gary:

Someone is baking gingerbread in my apartment ... mmm ...
Avatar 9:14pm hyde:

there's no denyin' that gingerbread baking smells goooood
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Gary:

Very distracting, I'll say that much.
  9:27pm Jill B.:

Hi Everyone, Better late than never! could not drag myself inside.....the weather here is glorious!!!!!! Sitting at the computer with a nice cold glass of Pinot Grigio and a bowl of left over spaghetti with Bolognese (sp) sauce. Really yummy, but probably not as yummy as the chicken pot pie from the recipe that Gary sent to me. Thank you!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Gary:

Mom! Looks like you're feeling better now?
Avatar 9:28pm hyde:

heh, unsurprisingly googling about the Flower of Isan record led me back around to an old Gateway to Joy playlist on WFMU. Reminded me I hadn't heard Donna for a long time, which I do not enjoy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Gary:

I need to go look at Gateway to Joy -- it's new to me
Avatar 9:30pm hyde:

and it's about time he finally sent Mom the recipe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Gary:

I had to type it out!!!
Avatar 9:32pm hyde:

man, Gateway to Joy is right up your alley, I think. Her last show in November was a tribute to the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm listener james from westwood:

Gateway to Joy is lovely. So wish Donna had a regular show. Her fill-ins are appointment radio and mandatory downloads.
  9:33pm Jill B.:

Hey Gary, Well I'm better than I was, but not totally myself. Such is life as you get older!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm listener james from westwood:

Dang, I need to go check her out after tonight's show. Mom, sending healing vibes

Donna's show would sure be a great Drummer Stream show HINT HINT HINT HINT HINT

Sir Lancelot was also an actor, in one of my favorite movies of the '40s: 'The Curse of the Cat People'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Gary:

Seriously, Pat? That's awesome! I had no idea ...
  9:40pm doca:

Hi, Gary! Cadê o mocotó???
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Uncle Michael:

Greetings, Bodiggers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Gary:

Doca! Did I get the title wrong?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Gary:

Unka Mike!
  9:43pm doca:

No, it's right, up to the diacritics(?) even! Do you know what is mocotó, though?
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Uncle Michael:

I'm late! I had to assemble the new grill after work, then go eat, then assemble a new monitor support for one of the monitors in the studio....and keep an eye on the Cubs.
Avatar 9:44pm Pat of Jolon:

@Gary, sure enough, Lancelot Victor Edward Pinard did some small character parts in Val Lewton movies ('I Walked with a Zombie' is another) and others like 'Brute Force' and 'To Have and Have Not'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Gary:

*blush*, no I don't Doca. Mebbe I go Google translate it & see ....
Avatar 9:45pm hyde:

UM! you made it.

also, I never grabbed this Yao Su Rong. Now rectifying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm northguineahills:

Back, hey fellow hosers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Gary:

Google translate says it means "Where the Mocoto?" (It left out the comma and "bitches")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Gary:

NGH, welcome back -- we're trying to get doca to tell us what mocoto means :)
  9:46pm doca:

haha you won't find it. It is one of the grossest Brazilian dishes, I can't even stand it. It' a soup cooked with the cow's feet and its intestines, usually the intestines filled with even more meat.
  9:47pm Jill B.:

This is a great mix of music tonight. Glad I mad it inside in time to catch the last bit. Mother loves you!
  9:47pm doca:

It is even sold cold for people to heat it up at house, where I live this is very popular in the winter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Gary:

Mmm, cow's feet. I'll be right over, doca!
Avatar 9:49pm hyde:

@doca I'd try that, honestly. And let me guess: it's hangover food?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm northguineahills:

@doca: sounds like a dish for me! (had my friends take me to a restaurant in Mexico City that had similar ingredients. Great for killing a hangover!
  9:54pm doca:

@hyde: I don't know, maybe. But as I've said, I can't stand it, the smell of it...
@Gary: here what goes on mocotó, which is a powered up version of this dish here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sopa_de_mondongo
Avatar 9:57pm hyde:

ah, mondongo. that i've tried and liked...
Avatar 9:57pm carol:

this Karol Conka is cool! great show tonight gary! thanks!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Gary:

Someone is cutting me a slice of gingerbread as I type this .... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Gary:

One more song after the Conka, and then we're outta here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Gary:

This whole album, Carol, is so, so, so rawkin
Avatar 9:59pm hyde:

jeez, gingerbread taunts are the worst. (heh) but thanks for the tunes, as always!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Santos L Halper:

Gingerbread sounds more my speed than the mocoto. Thanks for the tasty sounds tonight Gary!
Avatar 9:59pm carol:

i can imagine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Gary:

Oh god it's so warm, so moist, so delicious
  10:00pm doca:

@hyde: yeah, mocotó is mondongo plus the feet, like if mondongo was mixed with feijoada.
@Gary: didn't know this Karol Conka, actually, but I liked it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Gary:

Great hanging out, everyone ... see you soon!
  10:02pm doca:

Just to finish the mocotó thing, there is also a thing called "geléia de mocotó", which is kind of a jam made from the bone's marrow, just like gelatine in the old days. Never tried as it though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Gary! Enjoy the gingerbread!
