Holly in NC:

@ndbob -HORRIBLE, and for once problems are NOT due to silly Southerners being unprepared/not knowing how to deal. Honest to god perfect shitstorm.

*outside proof - tonights's Duke/UNC game cancelled as Duke bus can't get to campus to p/u Duke players to drive to CH. Anyone who follows college basketball knows this is serious!

Fully expect to lose power later tonight, but have flashlight & candles & a lantern at the ready, laptop & phone fully charged, several books & tons of canned fish and red wine. I figure I'll need to stay where I am 'til Friday, and thankfully can do so.

Would also like to say folks in my 'hood are being AMAZING. Several neighbors are currently walking the 2 I-85 exits in our area to bring water, hot drinks and protein bars to stranded folks, and everyone who has extra rooms/floor space has been entering themselves into a data base via our listserv, which we've shared w Durham police, so they can start bring vulnerable people down from the highway to our houses for shelter.

I am NOT in my own neighborhood, am dog-sitting across town in a house where I am now totally trapped due to crazy-long iced uphill driveway - but I'm so proud of my hood. Go Duke Park!

Hi Mom!

Meteorologists got this one right and unbelievably local governments listened. All nearby school systems (Durham, Wake, Orange counties) were closed today, which seemed beyond silly when at noon skies were still totally clear. Then WHAM! Like a dump truck from the sky. If the school buses were on the road this afternoon.. well, I don't want to contemplate.

Apparently large numbers of my neighbors are now forming human chains at the exits to push cars up the hills. BRAVO.
