There's no disputing Vandermark's song choices, but the instrumentation isn't OUT enough. And, yes, musical saw would be nice, too. Also conch shell. Ocarina. Cigar box banjo?

hyde:

@Jeff it was pretty cool. He was a bit of an oddball professor and was kind of a reticent lecturer, but he was really interesting. I also had a class with Archie Shepp there, who I'm proud to say actually gave me a really good grade on a 25 page final paper I wrote on the "African origins of Avant Garde Jazz"...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
pacific standard simon:

@Jeff - You're right about the cufflink -- I misremembered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
pacific standard simon:

My first jazz record was Stan Getz at The Shrine (father's record), but what really opened my eyes was Frank Zappa's "Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbeque", and an Impulse! Records 3-record set.
Avatar 🥁 2:04pm
hyde:

I'm not sure what my first jazz record was. I do remember reading a lot of Downbeat in the library as a kid and finding some stuff that way. I also don't really know when I started on more "out' jazz, but I did somehow see the Arkestra play at Mass Art when I was in high school....
Avatar 2:05pm
Shaun:

@pss I'd say it was Tony Williams' up on that ride in Maiden Voyage playing anything but ten-to-ten that hipped me but Jeff will just play his jazz trance clip at me ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm
Jeff Golick:

@hyde: That Shepp grade is pride-worthy! Geez. I recall being scared shitless as an undergrad in a class taught by poet (and Trane liner note writer) Michael S. Harper. We read (and discussed!) his own poetry.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm

Yeah, props to the public library systems of America -- mine had a lot Ornette, Coltrane, Davis, etc. and nobody else wanted to check them out.
Avatar 🥁 2:14pm

@Jeff. you want terrified? after i got the grade, before one of the last classes I got REALLY stoned 'cause I had already gotten my grade and then I went into class and Archie Shepp ASKED ME TO READ IT TO THE CLASS. what a disaster. I was completely nervous and baked and totally flubbed the whole thing. D'oh.
Avatar 🥁 2:16pm

@pss ditto. I got great jazz stuff on vinyl out of the local library as a kid. I remember grabbing that early Ornette stuff from there.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm

So which instrument do you want in the Destination:Out jazz jug band, Uncle Michael?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
Jeff Golick:

@UM: even though I'm guessing (hoping?) that's a rhetorical question, I do believe it's an ode to the city itself. That album is something of an homage to family road trips Friedlander took as a tyke, iirc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm

Avatar 🥁 2:34pm

@pacific standard simon the greatest irony of my anecdote is that Shepp generally came into class smelling like weed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm

If this is free jazz, though, we may have to list the ocarina in the liner notes as "sweet potato".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm

I once heard a set on Pacifica radio DJ'd by John Zorn in which he played some kind of amazing Indian jazz with a lead on conch shell (cut off end blown into like a trumpet, apparently).
