  5:58pm listener james from westwood:

dressed to the nines for 6/19!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Without Texas, Scott, there'd be no Juneteenth.
  5:59pm holland oats:

let's do this thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Hope the puddles have dried up, LJFW. Greetings holland oats!
  6:02pm ndbob:

evening Doug and everyone!.. did not get an email about today's show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Evening to you, ndbob. I sent out my email at 5:31. You didn't get it? I just checked and it appears that I didn't screw it up. A mystery. Thanks for arriving in style anyway.
  6:05pm ndbob:

of course:)
  6:06pm listener james from westwood:

thanks, doug! the waters, already shallow, have fully receded. i think my maintenance guy might moonlight as moses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Did Moses work "Part" time?
  6:11pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Doug Schulkind:

Bright moments, my dear radio family.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Doug Schulkind:

An Arizona radio talk host called our president a monkey on the air today. This is progress. It could never have happened in Texas in 1865.
  6:26pm Van in DC:

Quick rare live HI DOUG and everyone
  6:27pm listener james from westwood:

what is it with that state?! can't we deed az back to mexico or something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey, Van on a Tuesday night! Save me a buffalo wing.

You're a 'Zonan, LJFW?
  6:28pm listener james from westwood:

this goes with joe the plumber deciding recently in his wisdom that gun control caused the holocaust.
  6:28pm Van in DC:

Will do
  6:28pm northguineahills:

Arizona, the Florida of the SW......
  6:29pm listener james from westwood:

nope, actually a bronxian transplant to nj. it just seems like az is the source of the country's asshattery lately. which sux, b/c it's got some breathtaking scenery i'd love to visit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Oops, sorry LJFW. In haste, I read, "What is it with MY state." My apologies.
  6:31pm listener james from westwood:

i guess it's like nc after their anti-same-sex-marriage vote: visit it, but try to spend your dollars at the businesses of sane kindred spirits.
  6:32pm listener james from westwood:

oh, no, when it comes to nj, i have a few reasons lately to say that very sentence. :) most stem from king christie.
  6:32pm Stanley:

Thanks for the celebration music Doug. Lets stick it to racism in all its forms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Doug Schulkind:

Arm in arm, Stanley!
  6:37pm Le Petomane:

Doug,
I hope you play Slavery Days by Burning Spear, one of his and reggae's greatest roots tunes and on the classic Marcus Garvey album.
  6:38pm Holly in NC:

@Doug - correct, radio didn't exist 1865.

AZ, FL, MI, TX, MI, MO, TN, VA, GA, and yes, NC all in dire need of change. As a proud Yankee liberal who LOVES my adopted state, I assure you change *is* happening here!
  6:38pm northguineahills:

Technically, slavery was made illegal lastly in DE, DC, MD, WV, KY, & MO on Dec 6th, 1865 w/ the enforcement of the amendment. Before then, said states were exempt from the Emancipation proclamation. Enforcement was a different matter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Doug Schulkind:

@Le Petomane
I adore Burning Spear. That would be a wonderful cut to add...

@Holly
Your adopted state loves you. (Had to get in line to tell you, but it waited patiently.)

@NGH
That true? OK, folks, the party's over. Break it up!
  6:40pm Le Petomane:

slave master - Gregory Isaacs, who appeared in the film Rockers and that song.
  6:43pm northguineahills:

As a WV/Floridian transplant to Brooklyn, I can say FL is a mixture of all types of people. That makes it good, bad, and wacky. Some people tirelessly put up the good fight.
I meant to say the 13th amendment. Those states (territories) that where slavery was legal, but stayed w/in the Union weren't affected by the Emancipation Proclamation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Doug Schulkind:

The distortion on this track is gorgeous and necessary.
  6:47pm Le Petomane:

talking about Freedom and Slavery, just watched today the film - The day James Brown saved Boston. Following Martin Luther King's assassination in 1968.
  6:48pm listener james from westwood:

naples, fl was quite nice. a couple of alarming bumperstickers, but i didn't feel like a visiting alien or an ambassador from sanityville.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Doug Schulkind:

James's stret cred took a hit with that move, Le Petomane.

Speaking of alarming bumperstickers, one of my neighbors down the street has John Birch Society shit on his sedan. And he's Hasidic! Jesus Fucking Christ that's alarming.
  6:52pm ndbob:

sorry I'm not saying much - looks like my email is messed up - test emails ailed - and just got one from four hours ago.. been listening though - and it's great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Doug Schulkind:

I just assumed you were stunned to silence, ndbob.
  6:55pm Le Petomane:

sounds like a very confused gentleman!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Doug Schulkind:

Confused is a very generous way to put it, Le Petomane.
  6:56pm ndbob:

well that too Doug:)
  6:57pm listener james from westwood:

maybe he thought he was supporting reforestation efforts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Jesse Kaminsky and KAMINSKY KAMOUTSKY follow this show next. Playlist page here:

  6:58pm ndbob:

the primary election here went well - as far as referendums at least - both the elimination of property taxes and the "religious freedom" measures were voted down handily
  7:00pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
  7:00pm Le Petomane:

yep people are full of contradictions, but you put on a nice show Doug,
thanks alot!
  7:00pm listener james from westwood:

thanks for the fine juneteenth tribute, doug!
  7:40pm glenn:

sorry i missed the show. i was at the underground railway museum in north buxton, ontario on friday. this is the place where a great many runaway slaves from the u.s. ended up, and is the setting for uncle tom's cabin.

  9:21pm Holly in NC:

Hasidic. And John Birch. Wow. Rationalizing...how?
  9:44pm Van in DC:

k, I'll catch up tomorrow as usual...now engrossed in the NBA finals.

Juneteenth ALSO happens to be my mother's birthday today. She and I are native Texans. She's like, I don't know, 147 or something.

I just KNEW we Texans should have started our own country so many years ago. DANG it. That's okay, I'll go back and see that things are set straight. :)
  9:51pm Doug Schulkind:

Wish your Mama a happy 147th from me, Van! (She doesn't look a day over 132.)
  9:34am Van in DC:

It's that time again...time to Give the Drummer Some!

You know what's funny about that Juneteenth page you linked to Doug?

"This page last modified on August 23, 2011. " - that was my 50th birthday, I'm from Texas, I was living in Dallas on that day, and on that day last year is when the earthquake hit in the DC area and damaged the National Monument. Ha! And here I am back in DC.
  10:00am Doug Schulkind:

I remember that day very well. Was vibrated up out of this very seat here in Pittsburgh. 'Twas a mere two months after my 50th, too.
  10:33am Van in DC:

Always informative, always enjoyable, always entertaining, this GTDS presentation was no exception. Thanks for all you do Sir Doug!
