Welcome back Drummer Some!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Alf from Upstate:

Good greetings, Alf!
  5:58pm listener james from westwood:

is this the class where they teach jude-aica?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Funny, you don't look Judish.
  6:02pm ndbob:

  6:03pm Carmichael:

  6:03pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Doug Schulkind:

(nd)bobby bubbelah!

Happy sunshine, Carm.
  6:05pm Carmichael:

None here to speak of today, Doug. Bleary and dreary.
  6:09pm monica:

hey, doug. take a sad song and make it better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Doug Schulkind:

My condolences Carmichael. Pittsburgh was none to sunny today neither.

Hey Monica! (...has a nice ring to it.)
  6:10pm chaz:

howdy. any assagai in our future?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Don't you KNOW it, Chaz.
  6:12pm chaz:

psyched! all good.
  6:13pm Carmichael:

Was it Wilson Pickett or Otis Redding that did a version of this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Next up, a soul groover from South Africa.

@Carmichael
You will find out at show's end...
  6:14pm Andy S.:

This should be interesting, since I'm familiar with only the Beatles and (awesome) Wilson Pickett versions of "Hey Jude." ... Wait, the Fabulous Counts did it too?! I have that album, shame on me for forgetting...
  6:14pm Carmichael:

Ooohh, the torture ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Doug Schulkind:

The Fabulous Counts forgive you, Andy.
  6:17pm ndbob:

Wilson Pickett
  6:20pm Hugo:

Don Ellis at Fillmore?
Assagai, for sure!
  6:22pm ndbob:

Great version here
  6:22pm chaz:

killer-diller!
  6:22pm david:

hey dude! I wish this was on broadcast so i could listen in the car. I gotta head out so i can't listen on the 'net. will have to hit the archive. such a good idea!
  6:23pm Holly in NC:

Hi Doug!
@Hugo - Don Ellis, yes!
Hal Singer? Yusef?
Sorry I missed Overton Berry :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Doug Schulkind:

Hugo, Don Ellis does a pretty wild electronified version of HJ, but the sucker is over 10 minutes long!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Doug Schulkind:

I had this Assagai version on a marathon premium about 15 years ago.
  6:24pm Paul:

Yes, Doug! The Wheedle's Groove movie
is now out on DVD.
  6:25pm glenn:

oh dear.
  6:27pm Hugo:

I was going to suggest John Klemmer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi Holly! I nixed the Yusef version at the last minute. It's really long and kind of a performance-art piece. The entire song is played at an almost inaudible level until the very end. On the back of Yusef's LP jacket, he says something like, "Do not adjust the volume, adjust your mind!" Wouldn't have worked so good on radio.
  6:29pm Holly in NC:

Cool, as long as Tiny Tim was also preemptively nixed ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Doug Schulkind:

The next version may be the smokingest of all. Got it offa the YouBoobTube. Our performer is singing before a live audience that looks ridiculously comatose. Imagine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Doug Schulkind:

No Tiny Tims allow on the premises.
  6:32pm Andy S.:

This version (Ella Fitzgerald) makes me squirm in embarrassment for the artist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Doug Schulkind:

I agree that Ella must've hated doing this, but she fucking kills it. In my humble (and correct) opinion.
  6:38pm chaz:

she does kill it, doug.
cool organ version...
but damn, now i wanna hear tiny tim's version!
  6:38pm Holly in NC:

@Andy S - Check Ella on the Jimmy Durante show & see what you think. Same song, very different arrangement, which I humbly & correctly also enjoy;-)

  6:38pm Holly in NC:

@chaz -

No. No, you don't.
  6:41pm Hugo:

Doug - save the Don Ellis for Friday ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Doug Schulkind:

Hugo, I think I'll be done with this chestnut for at least 12 months...
  6:44pm Holly in NC:

I like this! flute flute flute
  6:46pm jk:

checking in. sorry I'm late. I see you've only played one song so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Doug Schulkind:

@jk, tomorrow, I'll do an hour of "Yesterday."
  6:47pm jk:

like
  6:47pm Hugo:

I see that Area Code 615 had a version on their debut album - trawling Allmusic Guide. I do have that one, but forgot that HJ is on it. They say Internet is a cure for amnesia ...
  6:48pm chaz:

that's a surreal statement, doug.
  6:48pm ndbob:

or maybe an hour of "Revolution Number 9" ?
  6:48pm Andy S.:

John Holt! Love this guy...When I was in Negril this past December, I saw posters advertising a John Holt show. Tragically, the date fell sometime after my departure from Jamaica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Keeping it surreal, Chaz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Doug Schulkind:

This track is from Senegal. The next track not so much.
  6:51pm Hugo:

Something tells me we're not going to hear the Grateful Dead version ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Duane Allman on guitar...
  6:53pm Holly in NC:

Oh yes.
  6:54pm northguineahills:

Fun set Doug, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Doug Schulkind:

NGH!
  6:55pm Andy S.:

Oft-told anecdote about the Wilson Pickett version, recorded in Muscle Shoals AL: As Wilson was running through the song (which he may never have heard before the session), he remarked to the assembled musicians: "Man, Jerry Wexler is NOT gonna like me singing this 'Hey Jew' song..."
  6:57pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
  6:58pm listener james from westwood:

thanks,doug! a fine assortment!
  6:59pm Holly in NC:

Thank you Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Doug Schulkind:

My pleasure, everybody!
  11:14am kat330:

"...waiting for someone to perform with..." and yes, "it's a fool who plays it cool..." Some interesting covers here, Doug, and I'd have to agree the Assagai was most special. Though Pickett picked me up as well!
  11:18am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
Will keep your asbestos-lined headphones on, because Steinski does ANOTHER all-Caravan show next week!
