Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

At the record fair, I picked up a Roland Hanna record, listened to it, and thought, huh, he's in the Tatum tradition: elegant swing, foundational stride, daring runs, lots of rubato. (I also got the Tatum Hollywood house party record and, whoa, I thought he was exuberant on the Solo Masterpieces.) Tyner, I think, for all his bigness, is not in the Tatum tradition at all - it's a totally different conception. Where does the shift happen? Maybe Bud Powell - does he have a hand in both the Tatum tradition and what becomes Tyner's?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
doctorjazz:

↳ DJ Peter @7:12
Doesn't sound like that bombastic Tyner style, I agree. Left hand quiet (for him)...
Avatar 🕰 7:14pm

↳ adamdoesit @7:13
I saw Tyner once in the late 90s, so Not Young, and he was playing so much piano that I actually stood up to make sure that he had not grown extra fingers or that no one else was helping him play. I actually did this. I have no defense, except for his performance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
DJ Peter:

↳ adamdoesit @7:13
Great question. Tyner's melodies are very pentatonic. And I think he developed his harmonies because they let Coltrane go anywhere. So too big differences from Tatum.

(Love Sir Roland Hanna)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
adamdoesit:

↳ Listener Gregory @7:14
I love it. I got to see him just before the end. He played pretty big then, too…

DJ Peter, it also occurs to me that what I'm calling the Tatum tradition is also the Hines tradition; and that this Old Devil Moon handily blurs any distinction I might want to make.

Mmm. could be. It was a double LP though.

Walter was a friend of Mahler's, I think he played it Mahler's way

recorded in '47. From what I see so far, not issued until much later.

Thanks for the tunes, DJ Peter. TLC won the dinner entertainment poll over both The Bear and the season finale of Only Murders in the Building this evening. Stiff competition! And no Electoral College to put its thumb on the scales.

Finished my catch up listen (didn't miss all that much). The Konitz track was terrific. Loved the Nefretitti. The Dutch set was quite short-done before I knew it.
I think the Smithsonial History of Classic jazz broke down the Concerto for Cootie-I'll check it (at the office now).
I have downloaded that Nels Cline, but it's oddly tagged, holding me up. I also found an unreleased Max Roach double quartet set (Blue Note NYC, I believe), could work for the Centennial (and a cool solo Joe Pass live set, unreleased).
Thanks DJ Peter!
