A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Yes, but they were NOT named after the Mothers track like I first assumed. Dave's not a Zappa fan.
He told me the name was inspired by the Wham-O toy and other things--like the title of an episode of the anime series "The 8th Man" (though I think he might've meant a "Gigantor" episode with that title).

When the Foolkiller first appeared in Steve Gerber's "Man-Thing" in 1973, someone wrote in asking if the character was named after the Eagles song. Gerber said it was actually inspired by that Mothers track. I assume he was kidding.

I watch the movie a bunch, and just keep writing down jokes.

Then it's a layered process of recording, watching it all, cutting the jokes that don't work, writing new jokes, and then watching it again to see if it all works again. I probably have to watch the movie at least 5 times to make it any good.

I have thought about turning this show into a "Public Access" style show, too, but I'm not sure I want to commit to making video EVERY time. Maybe a couple times a year.

Some group of vandals were defacing the website, so they have been offline for a week or so, to make sure there isn't any permanent damage. I think they have changed some of the back-end, to ensure the data is safe.

He wrote / recorded this in the early 2000's, and it was available for DJs to play on the radio for YEARS. I don't have a pristine, uncut version. I actually don't play the whole thing, sadly. I would love to find a pristine version, if any old KPSU voluteers are out there...

I tried to put together a monster music comp LP once, but the cover artist charged in advance and never delivered. I had to try to get him on Judge Mathis to get a refund! I did a cover of a song by Fats Waller, and I took a piano class just to learn that song, but my second choice would have been "A Wicked Thought" by Zacherley. I wrote to Zacherley a few times too, no reply. At that time, he had such terrible arthritis that his fingers were crooked and jagged, almost bent at right angles. Must have been so painful!

For this era of my radio show, I would usually just DJ. (Not much in the way of cut-ups, or anything.) And in the weeks leading into Halloween, I would slowly add Halloween songs to my playlists, so I wouldn't do "full shows" until the last week or so. This first year, I slipped in Halloween music starting on September 28th, and over the next few weeks. This is a edit of stuff from those first few shows.

The only Ramones album I don't like is Adios Amigos. Incidentally, Pet Semetary is the only movie that scared me as a kid. We drove past Resurrection Cemetery on the way home, and I already knew about the legendary ghost Resurrection Mary, and the headlights reflecting off of the tombstones in a repetitive fashion just terrified me.

My parents took me to any number of R rated movies as a kid, to their credit.

Rob Zombie did release just the audio of old horror movies on CD. I used to see them in the used CD store I worked in all the time, and would play them when I had the chance over the speakers.

Buzz Osborne has a funny interview where he talks about opening for Rob Zombie, and they just did total feedback after the crowd heckled. Rob Zombie would tell them to stop sound checking because he was "eating".

I saw them once, their last tour if I'm not mistaken. Lux had already had gold teeth to replace his natural ones because he was always swinging things around between his teeth. He was swinging around a 2x4 between his teeth when I saw them. He also threw his mic stand and almost hit Poison Ivy in the head.

And he grabbed a stage diver, put him in a headlock, and punched him several times, before grabbing him by the pants and throwing him back into the crowd. It was really a lot of fun.

At one of the shows, Lux was in heels the whole time, and was climbing amplifiers and jumping off and running around. I kept thinking: How is he balancing in those shoes? That takes some practice.
