A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Hello. I'm still grieving for the loss of my dear friend, Daved Hild. He was in the Boston band The Girls (Jeffrey I Hear You) and he played with David Thomas of Pere Ubu, as well as Roger Miller of Mission of Burma. He died three weeks ago today. We were really close buddies and were in touch every day for many years. We'd talk for hours on the phone about all sorts of things. He died suddenly on the way to work as a healthcare worker taking care of a cerebral palsy patient. I'm trying to muddle through. I have some really rough moments. Must get some sleep. Take care.

The world still doesn’t know what to do with them all, they’re just bouncing around from thrift store to thrift store. we should just gather them all up and make, like, affordable housing for the poor with them.

Opening for Wally was probably the most high-profile show my band, The Olsen Twins Ghostlight Ensemble, ever played, and our guitar player had managed to get us a number of other shows, that seemed to be leading to something. Unfortunately, my guitar player has decided to stop performing live, in light of Covid, and so we can only record under very controlled circumstances. There will be some more Olsen Twins here and there, but we won't likely play live in front of audiences anymore.

What happened was he started with a moment of silence, then he picked up the mic, stood there a moment, and then said: "Man...Vaughn Meader is FUCKED..."

This bar didn't have a great place for me to set up for recording, so I just put a zoom out on the table and crossed my fingers. I'm really impressed with how much I was able to get under such "quick and dirty" circumstances.

I was impressed, though. I've been to jazz shows where the audience was almost louder than the band.

My uncle gave me Henry Threadgill's "Too Much Sugar For A Dime" - great jazz record with a good skronk factor. Recommended!

After seeing a lot of wannabe folks play "free-improv" and not really listen to each other, it is always refreshing to hear / see a band that is absolutely listening to each other, very well. Something to aspire to.

I did love going to this bar. When they had shows, people really did respect the music. I've played shows at other places where the staff would talk through your sets, and the "crowd" was not there for music. It's just nice to hear a room full of people who are there to listen. I forget that it can happen.

I have an extra poster from that show in Seattle. Wally's name is on it, as he played the next night after us. There may be some other names you recognize on the poster as well.

Someday you will have to build a museum for all of it.

I need to open a store, and sell stuff online, to pay for the store, which can then be a museum to all the crap I've collected.

"A short one? Three hours." was Wally's quip that was hard to hear.

It's not a reasonable or sustainable plan, but for some reason, I want to run a weird thrift store SO BAD.

And it is a bad idea, to be sure. But I still dream about it.
