Gambling is the through-line in tonight's show. Rogue is gambling here in this story. Rocky Jordan has poker on the mind in the next. "The Arson Ring" has an insurance angle, a sort of gambling. And our X-Minus 1 story involves someone taking a very big gamble on a spaceship.

It's possible that they got new, original music by some NBC combo in those days. (Some shows, it was cheaper to just have a live band score it live with the actors recording their parts.) But a lot of shows - especially shows on stations with pretty good sound libraries - where one set of sounds was recorded, and then used in every episode. I haven't done enough side-by-side comparisons to say one way or another with this show, but X-Minus One, for example, uses all NBC library music as their soundtracks.

Like a lot of shows that are almost 80+ years old, the sound isn't perfect on this one; I did a little EQ to try and improve things, but there's still some distortion at the louder end of the sound spectrum.

I know I've mentioned this before, but I've been using audio-rendering algorithms to allow me to "remix" Old Radio episodes. The primary use I have found for them is to allow me to increase the "signal" for the dialog of these shows, and I can dial back the music and other sounds a bit, to make some of the dialog scenes a little easier to hear. I'll be doing this for Blue Beetle and X-Minus One from here on out. (Though most X-Minus One episodes don't need much help.)

I'm not really interested in "changing" these shows, or using these kinds of tools to create something new that's not in line with how the shows were supposed to sound. My primary interest in using tools like this is to improve the sounds that are there, so we can better enjoy the shows. Modern audiences are used to the high-quality audio dramas that you can hear on podcasts these days, and I'd like people to be able to better hear what makes these these shows great: the excellent writing and acting.

One challenge of some audio tools is that it CAN separate tracks, so you can have dialog and music separated. But depending on the settings and the sound, it can really deaden certain kinds of SFX (if you try to edit these shows in any extreme ways.) I mostly spent a lot of time comparing SFX to source files, just to make sure I wasn't loosing any of them using these tools.
