Donald Lautrec | Manon Viens Danser Le Ska | J'Ai Besoin De Ton Amour / Manon Viens Danser Le Ska | Jupiter | 1965 | Donald Lautrec (born Donald Bourgeois, July 13, 1940, in Jonquière, Quebec) is a Canadian (Quebec) singer and actor. With a friend in 1957, Lautrec created the acrobatic duo, Don and Lee, which performed on trampolines throughout Canada and the United States. He then mixed in the entertainment world by working as a lighting technician, a master of ceremonies in several Montreal cabarets and, for a short time, as a bodyguard to Québécois singer Michel Louvain. In 1964, he popularized the ska, a dance inspired by Jamaican ska with the songs C'est le Ska (That's Ska) and Manon, viens danser le ska (Manon, Come and Dance the Ska). In 1965 and 1966, he grew his success with Tu dis des bêtises (You're Talking Nonsense), Action and Loins dans ma campagne (Deep in My Countryside) which he sang in the movie Pas de vacances pour les idoles (No Holiday for Idols). In 1966 he travelled to France where he participated in television and radio, and received the Newcomer of the Year Award at the Gala des Artistes. He also sang the theme song for Montreal's Expo 67 | 0:00:37 (Pop-up)
Nudimension | Amour Programmé | Amour Programmé 7" | Illusion | 1982 | "Amour Programmé" is a song by the French Canadian synthpop group Nudimension. Louis Rondeau (known by his stage name "Louie Louie") was originally a drummer and vocalist in 1970s punk band The 222s.[4] In early 1981, the 222s were wound up by the original members. Rondeau states that as a result of that, he wanted to "explore new dimensions in music, and (the emerging genre of) electro would allow him to do that". He teamed up with the 222s assistant manager Marc Fontaine and on 16 June 1982, formed the studio group Nudimension, taking the band's name from his original music concept. The single is in the French language and was recorded at Fountain Studios, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Released by Illusion Records in May 1983, it became a breakthrough single for Nudimension and was the first to feature TV presenter Anne-Marie Cyr on vocals. It achieved moderate success in French-speaking regions of Canada, charting in the top 20 francophone charts. It was also released with a music video created by the band's Marc Fontaine, which was unusual for all but the biggest bands in 1983. The video featured footage shot during one of the band's appearances on Montreal's Musi-Video show and scenes of Louie Louie and Cyr in the studio with basic chromakey overlay effects. | 0:02:48 (Pop-up)
Alix Fernz | Muselière | Bizou | Alix Fernz | 2024 | Scratchy, contrasting and labyrinthine, songs from Alix Fernz (Montréal, QC) venture deep into post-punk’s scalene enclave, also flirting with hypnagogic pop, resulting in a lo-fi hybrid between synthwave and alternative rock, topped with catchy yet kooky melodies. Singing about bar life, psychosocial disorders, drug, addiction and fear, while drawing inspiration from high heels, lipstick, transvestism, fashion and weirdos, the singer-songwriter lays out along masqued syllabic beats the accounts of a coming-of-age in an era wherein likes and memes are all the rage. Alix Fernz presents a first mostly-francophone full-length, slowly pulling away from English to sing in his mother tongue. Looking to synthesize envy, anguish, anger, revolt and violence into a resolutely positive and tonic serum, he concocts, from the confines of his living quarters, ever-shifting heteroclite pop music that is sometimes innocent, others ironic, but always beautifully abnormal. The Montrealer offers Bizou... | * | 0:07:03 (Pop-up) |
DVTR | Les Flics (Sont des Sacs a Merde) | Les Flics (Sont des Sacs a Merde) | Lisbon Luxe | 2024 | You can have all kinds of rules for a band to have decorum and be nice and that’s all fine, but we just talk all kinds of shit in our tunes and spit poison and move on to the next thing....“We don’t do anything without integrity.” You may know Demi Lune as Laurence Giroux-Do, from Quebec indie outfit le Couleur, but in DVTR she’s Demi Lune, point final. Jean Divorce is JC Tellier, le Couleur’s touring guitarist, founding member of Gazoline and label manager at Ambiances Ambiguës. | 0:10:06 (Pop-up)
La Sécurité | Anyway | Stay Safe!` | Mothland | 2023 | La Sécurité (Montréal/Tiohtià:ke) is a collective whose art punk is equal parts: jumpy beats, off-kilter arrangements, and minimalistic melodic hooks; run through an insomniac filter, the result of excessive exposure to the city’s neon lights. The music is all about living dangerously, perfectly agreeable to being blasted onto dancefloors; while the lyrics share the ethos of the Riot Grrrl movement, and celebrate the autonomization of women, friends (mean and nice) as well as benevolence. You can find La Sécurité sporting thrift-shopped goodies in dark underground venues, on the rooftop of a tanning salon or on VHS tape, indulging in a symbiotic hurrah of disheveled music, cloaked poetry and improv dancing, with movement as a main creative fuel. Since coming together in the Spring of 2022, the five-piece has been invited to perform at SXSW, FME, Phoque OFF, Taverne Tour and DISTORSION Psych Fest, also sharing the stage with the likes of Automatic, Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp and Annie-Claude Deschênes (Duchess Says). | 0:12:57 (Pop-up)
YOCTO | Station 010111 | Zepta Supernova | Duprince | 2023 | This Francophone post-punk project can build it up as fast as they can tear it down. Hard-edged rhythms and fancy guitar work collide with smooth atmospheric psych rock to create a constellation of sounds that command your attention. Combining the art rock fury of Devo circa 1978 with the modern day sensibilities of Montreal’s feisty local music scene, Yocto is your new favourite band that you haven’t properly explored until you’ve spent time with Zepta Supernova. With Station 010111...it's easy to dismiss as an homage to Stereolab...oh but how well executed...and they have some surprises up their sleeve....SAXOMOPHOOOOONE!!!!! | 0:16:45 (Pop-up)
J'AI PEUR DES CRABES | City Walls | Cocobongo | J'AI PEUR DES CRABES | 2018 | JPDC is a project of Montreal multi-instrumentalist Emmanuel Alias of XS Studio. Its strange, instense and elevating mix of garage, psychedelic, blues, southern rock and krautrock. There isn't much press outside of a few pieces here and there...but this song in particular could (and perhaps should) belong on a Strokes record. But no need, for JPDC brings its own thing to the world. Embrace the melancholy and longing, as the broken heart limps to the finish line of life, wheezing and gasping like a dying crab on a sun baked beach. | 0:20:20 (Pop-up)
Music behind DJ: Bernard Bonnier |
Le Grinçant Mr. Smile |
Casse-Tete |
Amaryllis |
1984 |
The first electronic music studio in the province was established in 1964 at McGill. Founded by Anhalt, it featured a number of instruments invented by pioneering composer Hugh Le Caine. One of the students who attended courses at the SMEUL in the early ‘70s was Bernard Bonnier. Bonnier had started experimenting with musique concrète in his makeshift studio as early as 1968. After graduating from Laval University, he travelled to Paris and became Pierre Henry’s assistant from 1972 to 1976. When he returned to Québec, Bonnier set up the Amaryllis studio with Gisèle Ricard. He eventually self-released his sole LP, the cult classic Casse-Tête, in 1984. The record is a strange beast, a mind-melting mixture of looped samples, live drums and sequenced electronics. The mix of pop elements and experimental techniques predated the kind of avant-rock and techno experiments that would crop up in later years. |

The Fall | How I Wrote Elastic Man (Live) | The Fall – New Orleans 1981 | Cog Sinister / Let Them Eat Vinyl | 1981 / 2019 | Lo-fi, but fun... Live 1981 23rd June at Jimmy's New Orleans, Louisiana USA. //// For those of you familiar with the song, enjoy the special ending that Mark E. Smith cooked up for New Orleans that day. I love these little surprises. //// From Annotated Fall: "A comic strip called "Ping the Elastic Man" by one Hugh McNeill appeared in the English children's magazine The Beano from 1938-1940. There doesn't seem to be any evidence that McNeill was a tortured soul...from Dan: "There are some Fall-world connections worth noting about McNeill that I haven’t seen noted by anyone else. First of all, he was born in Moss Side, Manchester. And secondly, he died on 22 November 1979, just a couple of months before the live debut of How I Wrote Elastic Man." / One of Captain Marvel's enemies was called first Plastic Man, then Elastic Man... "Plastic Man" is also a 1969 Kinks song, and before that (1967) there is a Sonny and Cher song." | 0:33:25 (Pop-up)
Elastica | How He Wrote Elastica Man | The Menace | Atlantic | 2000 | Mark E. Smith vocalizes & provides lyrics along w/Julia Nagle to provide extra Fall content (Dave Bush had already joined the band full-time) on this Elastica song, a nod to the old Fall title from 1980. For avid fans (of either band) the "6 Track EP" release included a different version of this song & an additional Mark E. Smith collaboration "KB"... Lastly, apparently there are two more (unreleased) tracks from the sessions, but they've never seen the light of day. This Final Lineup (1998-2001) of Elastica = Justine Frischmann, Justin Welch, Annie Holland, Dave Bush, Mew, Paul Jones. | 0:39:14 (Pop-up)

It is the first original studio effort by the band in a decade and is the final recording made before band member Steve Albini's death days prior to the album's release. The recording was made around the band's touring over the course of several years and was not promoted with advance copies, specific tour dates, or singles. The Shifters | Medieval Kicks | Have a Cunning Plan | Trouble In Mind | 2018 | The album showcases ten new tracks by the band at their best; scrappy, self-destructive, stumbling and brilliant pop music that seems tossed off or nonchalant on the surface but is rife with rewards upon further listening...heavy on mood and are vehicles for vocalist/guitarist Miles Jansen’s erudite lyrics that simultaneously celebrate and decry the banality of life, while also tackling larger issues of colonialism conservatism’s effects on society at large. I get it. Serfs can't catch a fucking break these days.... | 0:59:45 (Pop-up)

But close. Steeped in a woozy world of absurdist punk rock, Normal (real name Nick Barnaby) conjures the very best of underground weirdos like Axemen while paying obvious homage to icons like Devo. | * | 1:02:13 (Pop-up) |
Adam + Attack By Fire | Artificial Dance Machine | Artificial Dance Machine Single | Adam + Attack By Fire | Adam + Attack By Fir | Adam is a songwriter, rocker, and producer. His songs touch on "iconic sounds that feel proto punkish and glam and more"...His style "has the swirling glam rock styling that endears itself to fans of Bowie or Bolan" Adam + Attack By Fire‘s Artificial Dance Machine is a high-energy track that blends 80s art rock with post punk influences. The song captures the raw, rebellious spirit of post punk while infusing it with the creative flair and boldness of 80s art rock. With its memorable riffs, infectious rhythms, and plenty of rebellious attitude, Artificial Dance Machine is a fun, vibrant romp that stands out. The track’s superb style and engaging sound make it a nostalgic yet fresh listening experience, celebrating the enduring appeal of rock with a modern twist. | * | 1:06:16 (Pop-up) |
The World | New Pearls | First World Record | Upset The Rhythm | 2017 | Oakland five-piece The World’s debut album jolts and jumps along to off-kilter drum beats and saxophone hooks for the entirety of its play time. The band’s wedding of metallic postpunk with matter-of-fact vocal chit-chattery works to create their uniquely propulsive sound. ‘First World Record’ is in equal parts a darkly comical full-length floor-filler and a revolt; a flick of two fingers to consumerism and the ‘culture muck’ that is the millennial preoccupation with all things meaninglessly faddish. It’s an intense mix of lo-fi pop and DIY nearly jazz, full of anxiety and also anxiety-inducing – a cry for depth in a world that is fast becoming an echo-chamber for the self(ie)-obsessed. | 1:08:26 (Pop-up)
Eran Westwood | All The Boys | Sonic I | Sounds of Red Bull | 2019 | This banger is exactly that...a Red Bull Banger...comped for maximum feel that buzz effect! No singer or performers are credited on this release...but our sleuthy ways have undercovered that apparently, thjs tune was written and produced by one Eran Westwood, a music producer and supervisor, member of the band Spill and occasional collaborator with Front 242. | 1:10:12 (Pop-up)
The Pill | Bale of Hay | Bale of Hay | The Pill | 2024 | The Pill are making their debut with latest single, ‘Bale Of Hay’. Laden with gritty acoustics and tongue-in-cheek songwriting, the Isle of Wight duo offer a fresh take on the feminist anthem. Made up of core members Lily and Lottie, the band first merged forces in 2019, now establishing themselves across the live circuit and beyond. On ‘Bale Of Hay’ the outfit tackles the stereotypes of womanhood with wit and irony, reclaiming their golden locks across a bold, magnetic hook. Speaking on their latest release, they share: “Are you blonde? Then this song is for you. Are you not? You will want to be once this is through. ‘Bale of Hay’ is a truthful, noisy checklist about the realities of being blonde. Oh, it’s so difficult.” A must-see live act, the months ahead will see Lily, Lottie and drummer Rufus join Big Special and Juno on tour, refining their performance amongst new crowds. As they join the next wave of garage punk, ‘Bale of Hay’ channels a fiery conviction, a promising introduction to The Pill. | * | 1:12:42 (Pop-up) |
Agender | Pastishe | No Nostalgia | Climax! | 2022 | EXISTENTIAL TERROR HURRAH, SNAPPY SYNTHY PUNCHY POST-PUNK FROM LA! NO NOSTALGIA, sees the four-piece satirically examine their place in today's fast-evolving world. The album reads as a newspaper or a collage. It’s a political, spiritual, philosophical look at modern society- the information age. It’s an anthropological look at the absurd current state of affairs. It’s focused yet unhinged, self reflective, observant, brash, tongue in cheek, serious yet playful. Excavations and observations of the mind of an anxiously attached, overthinking, spiritual human. | 1:14:42 (Pop-up)
STEEF | Frozen In Place | Frozen In Place/That's How I Feel | STEEF | 2024 | Manufactured and ugly It wreaks of petroleum jelly Barely half conscious hyper focused bender held together by duct tape The patina of chain smoked lungs obscuring the bottle glass Is something in there? That's for you to decide....Frozen in Place takes the band in new directions...perhaps less frantic, still as paranoid and dare we say...a little more beautiful? | * | 1:17:32 (Pop-up) |

Ramones | Got A Lot To Say | ¡Adios Amigos! | Radioactive | 1995 | The final album from Ramones. I revisited it last week & found it to be fairly enjoyable, despite the late entry into the canon. This album actually has almost everyone involved. Even though C.J. Ramone replaced Dee Dee, it doesn't stop Dee Dee from Co-writing almost half the album. Marky Ramone was behind the drum kit. Daniel Rey, long time producer for the band, was producing & co-writing much of the album also. A real family affair. This is one of the songs C.J. wrote. It's a great addition to the catalogue. | 1:23:17 (Pop-up)
Osees | I Got A Lot | Metamorphosed | Rock Is Hell Records | 2021 | Doubt this has been played in full too many times on radio, and don't know if we'll make it all the way through this time.
