Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Opera singers who think they can sing pop and show tunes are one of my pet peeves. I don't think that most of them managed it until this century. However, I will keep an open mind.

The deep voices and perfect diction opera singers must have don't always work when you're singing "I'm just a girl who cain't say no."

Some opera talent makes a big difference with stuff like "Glitter and be Gay"

Word has it that Meredith Willson made efforts to attend as many productions of The Music Man as he could. For example, Downey Community Theater staged it more than fifty years ago, and legend has it that Willson attended a performance. Downey is in Southern California, home of The Carpenters, The Blasters, Pat Benatar, and the amazing Wenzell's Music Town.

Here's David Mason Greene in Fanfare, May/June 1994, on Dahl's Bernstein:

"Listening to her rendition of the Candide aria, 1 thought 'This is a tiny voice.' But what followed suggests that that apparent diminution is a product of faulty balance. Bernstein's wonderful spoof is a special favorite of mine (has any other soprano included it in such a recorded recital?), and I have never heard it done better. Oh yes, I've heard others sing it as well, but no one in my experience has gotten inside this ultimate gold-digger as Dahl has—and this not by exaggeration or vocal mugging, but by subtle touches."

I like that take, LG, even if I don't agree with it. But I find female rap singers way more convincing than male. P Diddy? Kanye? Kendrick? Jay Z? These guys sound completely gutless to me. In opera, I'm pretty much equal opportunity. A great singer is a great singer.

Hey Bronwyn, this song and your opening number tonight gave me a theme idea for an AJH Program: American History in show tunes. Have you ever done a show like that? I figured it could include musicals like 1776 and Hamilton that are all about US history, and other songs from non-historical shows but that at least touch on some American historical events. Any thoughts on that?
