Worth noting that (outside of the Middle East), and particularly in LATAM, a sizeable portion of the diaspora is pre-1948, and more likely to be of Christian affiliation. Which is not to distract from the events of 1948 and their aftermath. But just to keep in mind the fact that this population is quite diverse.

Not every 4-5 days but once in a while. I generally give out a fake voicemail number (such as provided by that company whose name rhymes with oogle) for most signups, and basically never answer my actual cell unless it's from a number I recognize. My biggest fear is that the climate crisis may in fact turn out to be reasonably tractable to deal with, from an economic / technological point of view. But that we'll never get around to implementing enough of the fixes in time, due to all the hate, provocation, doomscrolling & general assholery that people seem to prefer gravitating towards (current crowd excepted).

That's an interesting theory and quite plausible. Meanwhlie, by far the most important news in recent weeks (stronger, and more depressing results in regard to the expected collapse of the Antarctic ice shelf -- within decades, not centuries) has of course been basically eclipsed by the recent spike in horror and awfulness. (As if the man in the street could actually care about one or the other, if not immediatel affected).

Not entirely by coincidence, my stomach is looking forward to that pot of red lentil soup I'll be pulling out of the fridge + re-heating shortly after the close of this wonderful set. Not a specifically Palestinian dish (it's all over the Levant / Turkey / North Africa) but something of staple in their cuisine, from what I understand. With shots of lemon + aleppo pepper. If I only had some fresh pita.

Beg to differ, tom tom. It isn't at all beyond human grasp. In fact, that's the point. We *know* we are affecting climate.

What is happening, however, doesn't comport with a lot of people's expectations and demands. Sorry, folks, but things don't always turn out the way you want it to turn out.
  9:38pm
Omar Quteineh:

Oh, I'm sorry for the misinformation, Gary. El Rass is from Tripoli, Lebanon. I don't why I was thinking about a Fayrouz song that mentions baalbek when I submitted that comment and in my head I connected that song to El Rass.

And excellent survival food, if you're on a tight budget (as I am presently). $1 or so for a very healthy meal.

Interesting! I always assume that these rabab-playing reciters of poetry are singing very old epic poems about the Bani Hilal or other old Arab characters. Interesting that he's delivering poetry about a modern situation in this form

I'm with Dean on this perspective. And that's what keeps my stomach in a perpetual state of churn, in regard to what seems far too likely to happen. Unless vastly more people start chilling out + listening to programs like this one (instead of snorting all those garbage news feeds they seem addicted to), that is.
