RIP... I'm dead. I thought you meant that as some cheeky euphemism when you posted that earlier. I was like not sure what a "Monty Hall" is but have a blast WR... dying. 😂

I know what Monty Hall is but waiting for Syd Barrett does seem like an existential, kinda morbid exercise.

The amazing Weather Report! Joe Zawinul's great jazz fusion band of the 70s. Saw them live once in LA when Wayne Shorter and Jaco Pastorious were with the band. Mesmerizing!

Monty Hall is a performance space on the ground floor of the Main WFMU building in Jersey City, quiet since COVID (until now).

Is this the first MH event since covid? I have not been there either in a few years but it's two rivers away from me.

Not sure, I think this past Friday night they had the 1st concert there, not sure of there's been anything else there (not much, if anything)
  7:37pm
Gerry from Miami:

@djnogoodnick. Good to be here. Your last two selections take me back to my days listening to LA's 24-hour jazz station, the venerable KBCA-FM. That period in the mid-70s when jazz musicians were expanding their horizons. Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Jean-Luc Ponty, electrified Herbie Hancock, whatever Miles was doing, etc.

Ahh, I'm in good company then. That's flattering. I have to admit it took me a while to come around to embracing "long-winded" jazz fusion, since before this I mostly played parties where a pop jazz funk / disco vibe is expected.

LA also has some spectacular radio!
  7:44pm
Gerry from Miami:

Yes, indeed it does! But with the Internet and apps, we can tune into just about anything we want to listen to now. But I still miss my dial-twiddling days out West.
Avatar 7:49pm
djnogoodnick:

↳ Gerry from Miami @7:44
I spent a few weeks in LA this winter and twiddled with the dial often, as I spent a lot of time in my car.
  7:57pm
Gerry from Miami:

Ha ha! LA residents LIVE in their cars! Thanks for playing Henry Franklin, the Skipper. He played at Monterey Pop in 1967 with South African Hugh Masakela, who had a monster hit then with "Grazin' in the Grass."

Thank you! Will miss you and these Sundays, but really just can't keep it up week after week. I intend to do fill-in shows frequently, will be fun to experiment with different timeslots.

Gerry from Miami:

Flora Purim was incarcerated for cocaine possesssion in a low-security prison at Terminal Island in San Pedro, California, the port city of LA, in the early 70s. While there, she was allowed to travel over to Long Beach State University and take music classes. Her prison term culminated in a giant all-star concert at the prison that was broadcast live on KBCA, eminent jazz critic Leonard Feather presiding over the event. Flora and her husband, the brilliant percussionist, Airto Moreira, were original members of Chick Corea's Return to Forever. Remember the "Light As a Feather" album?

Sorry to lose you, djnogoodnick. This kind of music isn't played enough any more.

Whoa, never looked up her origin story as a musician. Did she meet Airto later? I thought she was active before the mid-70s..
  8:15pm
Gerry from Miami:

No, they were already married when she entered prison. Both are Brazilian, as you know.
  8:30pm

Just a note to say that Flora and Airto are still kickin', both age 82.
