Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from April 4, 2023 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

The Surgical Museum? Unbelievable place. They had a replica of a beating heart the size of a room, which they may or may not have ripped off from the museum of science and industry. I used to do catering jobs and have served booze to rich people in every museum in the city at least four times.

Kat, do you remember James at Wluw? Well I was asked to DJ his wedding, but I refused to play Phil Collins, and anyway before I screwed that up, I insisted that they play deeper cuts, such as the Rolling Stones version of That's How Strong My Love Is, and some other stuff by ABBA other than Dancing Queen. You see, I bartended weddings weekly, and just could not bare to be that guy. I can't do low hanging fruit, but I regret not being part of that special night, as I am very fond of James. We are still in touch. They recently had their ten year anniversary.

Catering was fun. I got to see what rich people do. One party I did was a James Bond theme. They had a car from one of the movies and a little helicopter was flying around with hors d'oeuvres hanging from it where it was apprehended by a lady in red velvet, who would hand the food items to patrons. There was a Shirley Bassey sound alike singer on a spiral staircase. It was beautiful. And who headlines? Maroon 5. And they were drunk. That was rough.

Early in my catering career, I worked for a company that let the client boss us around. One of them tried to make me build a pyramid out of wine glasses, and got snippy with me about it, so I built it, and then knocked all of them crashing to the floor. That was at the airplane exhibit in the museum of science and industry. I then took two hours to "find the bathroom".

Announcer Mitch gets her name from a mannequin that my friend kiisu turned into a telephone. You talked into Mitch's mouth, and her hand de-tached, and had the ear-piece in it. The dialing pad was on her chest; you had to take off her top to make a call. Most people didn't want to use Mitch to make calls, for some reason.
