Oh, yeah. This show is "local" for you, Kat.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:16pm
Kat in Chicago:

I didn't live here till 1980 but this is still super interesting. @Mr. Fab - I ask myself that every January.

"Weeee're." That was a little sloppy.

When I still smoked cigarettes, I smoked Camels for a while. Until I discovered there was a brand called, "Austin," which was... well, my brand.
Avatar 8:20pm

This station was big on the folk revival.

(Maybe everyone was, at this tiime?)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:21pm

'62 seems right for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm

The Highwaymen were big then.

Somehow I'm remembering Donny & Marie doing Cotton Fields. They did that country thang.

Austin Rich:

That's the kind of "U 2" you don't hear a lot of on the radio these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
Krys O.:

The Highwaymen had a #1 hit with Michael Row the Boat Ashore.

Cryin' Connie....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Krys O.:

From Wiki: The Highwaymen had a significant impact on the folk scene of the early 1960s. Aside from two major hit singles and several appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, the group contributed two future standards to the folk repertoire, "All My Trials", "Big Rock Candy Mountain", and played the central role in uncovering "Cotton Fields", a long-overlooked song by Lead Belly, which subsequently became a major addition to the repertoires of both the Beach Boys and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The Highwaymen also made the first recording of "Universal Soldier", by Buffy Sainte-Marie.[27]
Avatar 8:26pm
Mr Fab:

Was commercial radio always this gabby? I love hearing it now, but it might have annoyed listeners who just wanted music. "Less rock, more talk."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Austin Rich:

I think the idea of a "Rock Block" (a few songs without a DJ talking) is a post-70's idea. In think in the old days, they really thought you should talk between every record. And, technologically speaking, it was hard to flip records constantly without stopping to talk a little.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Austin Rich:

That sounds a little like Gary Owens...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Krys O.:

@Mr. Fab: I was just thinking of Dan Ingram who was big in the NYC area in the 60s onward. He would drop-in to songs, but he was hilarious and it wasn't annoying to many of us.

I also remember FM AOR radio with the stoner sounding DJs.
Avatar 8:30pm
Mr Fab:

Yeah, I guess DJs were sometimes as popular as the records they were playing.
Avatar 8:31pm
Mr Fab:

"I'm so strong and healthy, vitamins take me" - Ernie invented Chuck Norris jokes!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:31pm

Ha! That's right!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm

This specific aircheck must be the one that Scott Simon used to produce that spot above.
Avatar 8:35pm

soul groovers alternating with folkies is an odd format...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm

Avatar 8:50pm

This is CHOICE stuff!
Avatar 8:50pm

very hip choice, instead of the usual Monster Mash.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
Austin Rich:

That's interesting. I guess in my time (80's / 90's) you went out on Halloween, regardless of the day of the week. I recall at least one Sunday night Halloween where I had school the next day.
Avatar 8:55pm
Mr Fab:

Oh yeah, you'd g to school, go trick or treating at night, school next day with a bag of candy.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm

Great selections this week, Mark! (Wherever you are!)
