Cyberpunk is a great album.especially for Max Headroom fans.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:03pm
Austin Rich:

Scott67! Now you know it's a party.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:03pm
Austin Rich:

I know I sampled Cyberpunk at least once in a previous episode of the 20 Minutes podcast. But I'm actually only familiar with in from the last few years.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:04pm
Austin Rich:

I never had it back in the day.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:05pm
Austin Rich:

Charles: It's essentially the same story of the first episode, with a few extra bits, and re-written a bit.
Avatar 🎸 9:05pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

The opening speech is interesting
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:06pm
Austin Rich:

That speech is the bit I've sampled! I always think that and the Bowie 90's cyberpunk album sort of got lost in the shuffle. Grunge was just a little too big at the time.
  9:06pm
Charles:

Feels weird to have the regular shows back. I keep expecting Vincent Price to pop in.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. I go a little overboard for Halloween.

We have one Thanksgiving show this month, and I'll do some Christmas programming in December. So our schedule will be a little strange for a while. And we're introducing a new show soon, once we play the two Scarlet Queen pilots.
Avatar 🎸 9:09pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Mother Dawn was a good song. Especially the poem at the end. And the 2001/2010 sampling.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
Austin Rich:

I'm a sucker for 2001 and 2010. I had a tape of both of those movies on it, and would watch it often as a youth.
  9:10pm
Charles:

No, no. Not overboard. It was great. I'm equally fond of the normal schedule as I am of the seasonal stuff.
Avatar 9:11pm
Mr Fab:

Austin! Wow, haven’t heard good ol’ “Box 13” in a while. Nice to hang with the gang again.
Avatar 🎸 9:11pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

I love this episode of Box 13.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Austin Rich:

Old Time Radio often slipped into seasonal stories and programming at the drop of a hat. So I feel like Dimestore should reflect that, a little.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
Austin Rich:

This episode of Box 13 sort of has a Hitchcock vibe to it.
Avatar 🎸 9:13pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Will you be playing A Miracle for Christmas from Grand Central Station in December?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:15pm
Austin Rich:

I have some "Christmas movies on the radio" coming, with a few "light holiday detective" stories. It's my excuse to play some Damon Runyon Theater.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
Austin Rich:

I'm a big fan of the comic book, "The Spirit," and this story really has a bit of a certain Spirit story that I vaguely remember.
Avatar 🎸 9:20pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Makes me think of old EC comics.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Austin Rich:

We got a huge EC Collection at work recently, and I'm really tempted to keep it for myself.
Avatar 🎸 9:22pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

If you buy it you can keep it and still make money for your store.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Austin Rich:

True! But I've bought a lot of stuff recently, and Christmas is around the corner.

If it is still there after Christmas, I think I'll get it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Austin Rich:

"Nobody Goes Anyplace." That line is very... now.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Austin Rich:

Another reference to "radio" and how radio works in a Box 13 episode... I feel like they really love to break the 4th wall.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
Austin Rich:

It does make sense that the only possible adversary for Dan Holiday is another writer.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:28pm
Austin Rich:

That might have been the only time that the show ever tried to make us think that Dan was in true mortal danger... so far.
  9:28pm
Charles:

It worked. That was tense.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Austin Rich:

This was the episode that made me fall in love with Box 13.
  9:29pm
Charles:

Good night Suzy!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Austin Rich:

It's a really simple story, and presented very simply. Very few characters... but it's a corker, for sure!
  9:31pm
Charles:

That's not Elliot Lewis right?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Austin Rich:

As I mentioned in the chat earlier, this is the "original" telling of what became the first episode of "The Voyage of The Scarlett Queen." This version has a different title, and has a few beats that are not in the first episode. The voices are different... and this version seems like it was leaning more into the possibility of it having more of a "noir" flavor.

I think you're right... different lead actor, I'm pretty sure. (Maybe the credits will tell more?)
Avatar 🎸 9:34pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Nice Mad reference
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Austin Rich:

I find it funny that we have two different pilot episodes for "The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen," and yet we are also missing two of the actual broadcast episodes. I would think it would be harder to find the pilots...
Avatar 9:35pm
Mr Fab:

The Scarlet Queen was only 78 feet long? With 8 people crammed in? Must have been mighty cozy.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Austin Rich:

I was thinking that too, Mr. Fab.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Austin Rich:

I found this, Charles:

"The pilot starred Howard Duff as Captain Phil Karney, and Elliott Lewis as First Officer Red Gallagher. "
  9:36pm
Charles:

Switcheroo!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Austin Rich:

Howard Duff was one of the "Suspense" players, who would often appear on that show, and was the radio voice of Sam Spade, years later.
Avatar 🎸 9:37pm

The sleeping quarters would have a hammock and a sink and be two feet wide.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Austin Rich:

Heather! Nice to see you!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
Austin Rich:

That's right! Duff is the lead in the film, "Naked City.' I was trying to remember where I knew him from.
  9:39pm
Heather:

I've never heard this program and I'm liking it a lot!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Austin Rich:

Howard Duff also made appearances in The Twilight Zone, Rockford Files, Bonanza, Murder She Wrote, Knotts Landing, etc.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Austin Rich:

Howard Duff's last TV appearance was in The Golden Girls.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
Austin Rich:

My theory, as to why they re-did the pilot, was that this version really sounds more like a detective noir, and less like a sailing adventure show. I suspect the writers and producer heard the final version, and made some changes to the show that we have come to know. That's just my reading of the show; they could have changed things up for a lot of reasons.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Austin Rich:

I think the casting of Ed Max as Gallagher really changed the dynamic of the show. He's a great addition to the cast, and really makes the show in my mind.
  9:49pm
Charles:

I think so too.
Avatar 🎸 9:55pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Good action
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
Austin Rich:

Radio action often sounds bad, but this show usually delivered in a way that actually sounds good, and you can follow it.
Avatar 9:57pm
Mr Fab:

Cool episode, but I totally get what you mean about how it was basically Detective noir on a boat, instead of swashbuckling tales in exotic ports o’ call.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
Austin Rich:

It's an interesting radio artifact, but imperfect.

I'm just now learning that "Bored of The Rings" was written in 1969, which is a lot older than I thought it was. How funny.

Let's see... we're 36 episodes in... and they're still looking for Robert, and they don't really have a real lead.

This show is as slow as a soap.

Austin Rich:

At this stage in Dimension X's run, it had been officially "off the air" in many markets. In some, there had been re-runs, but not many. Now that the show was back, it would run weekly, uninterrupted, until it's end with episode #50. (This one is episode #36, for those keeping track.)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Austin Rich:

The only reason the show came back at all was due to the letter-writing campaign Obadiah and I talked about. The fan interest would cause the show to come back again (with a different name) after Dimension X goes off the air.

The paranoia that mid-century Americans had that "technology" would just suddenly turn against us is a pretty huge theme in a lot of sci-fi. I love it when this trope goes a little over the top: like, how is a cement mixer connected to a computer network, or have any parts that would be controllable by computers?

So you’re saying the cement mixer at the construction site around the corner from me’s NOT out to get me?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Austin Rich:

The ENIAC computer was first completed in 1945, and was the first programmable general purpose digital computer. It was MASSIVE, and took up the better part of a room.
Avatar 10:48pm
Mr Fab:

Who wrote this one, Bradbury?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Austin Rich:

Well, that might still be true, wenzo... but it's unlikely that a computer is controlling it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:49pm

This one is: Stephen Vincent Benét (based on the poem "The Revolt of the Machines"; adapted by George Lefferts)

1956 was five years in the future, when this originally aired.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:52pm

Humorously (and unrelated), on my show tomorrow I'm aired a story that I co-wrote with experimental artist, univac, who named himself after the UNIVAC computer, a follow-up to the ENIAC.
