Hey ho, Spacebro! Will you be playing Weird-Girl Groups or Weird Girl-Groups ?
Avatar 5:04pm

@ Fab - I think they fall in both categories.

I had never heard of Elvis Don Ringo until this week. So far behind!
Avatar 5:08pm

I hadn't heard this until now. Elvis Don Ringo didn't get the airplay that Lorne Greene did.

There was no one not named "Johnny" in the 1950s.
Avatar 5:15pm

The Three Graces are wrong. I think "7L" is just half of a swastika.
Avatar 5:16pm
David in California:

Does 7L predate Sam the Sham using L7 to mean square in Wooly Bully?
Avatar 5:18pm
spacebrother:

@ David - It might. I couldn't get a date on the recording.

This is a pretty great set so far. Distractedly trying to get into the radio zone. It's taking time, but I think I'm almost there... and you are helping!

"Junior Varsity" have a very "Threeteens" vibe to them.
Avatar 5:22pm
spacebrother:

OK, maybe there were a few "Mike"s in the 1950s too.

Although they are making fun of the old expression of exasperation.
Avatar 5:23pm
spacebrother:

@ Austin - Now I need to look that one up!

Good morning Greg and gang
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
Austin Rich:

The "One X One" song seems very "X + Y = Z" to me.

And they have a song called, "Bobby The Beatnik" that I adore.
Avatar 5:26pm
spacebrother:

Hey Aitch! Hope you're enjoying the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
Austin Rich:

I wonder if you can composite who "Johnny" is, and what he's like, combining all the songs that are about him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
Austin Rich:

I xxx-ooo Ken Nordine. The best.
Avatar 5:29pm

@ Austin - That would make a great book, or at least a blog post.

Austin, for starters, he's an angel, and he doesn't get angry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm

Exactly, @David! And people wonder if he's queer, too.

The researcher must first begin with a list as we are doing here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm

Noël's pronunciation is, itself, a thing that cracks me up.
Avatar 5:32pm

I think he had a Vegas residency. There's an album that claims so, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm

More Mel!
Avatar 5:33pm

A little more Mel Blanc.
Avatar 5:33pm
David in California:

Greg, yes, Coward said that many in his Vegas audiences thought he was Rex Harrison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
Austin Rich:

Woah. This song is... something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm
Austin Rich:

This "Bartender" set is wonderfully charming. You need some samples from "Barfly."
Avatar 5:36pm
spacebrother:

According to popular music, I guess a lot of men hated their wives in the 1950s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
Austin Rich:

Or some routines by AP Mike from The Best Show about the bar he hangs out at.
Avatar 5:37pm
spacebrother:

@ David - I can see how those provincial Americans could make that mistake!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm
Austin Rich:

If old radio shows are anything to be believed, the "everyone hated their wives in the 50's" was certainly a trope.
Avatar 5:40pm
spacebrother:

On one trip to Disneyland, I saw Cruella standing in a doorway on Main Street. A little nervous, I approached her and said "You're my hero." She looked at me with surprise, then contempt, rolled her eyes, and snorted and walked away. SWOON!!
Avatar 5:41pm
spacebrother:

And the actress was made up to look a little older, but obviously wasn't, which contributed to the swoon.
Avatar 5:42pm
spacebrother:

I think she was supposed to be the Glenn Close version.
Avatar 5:43pm
Mr Fab:

And they really hated the mother-n-laws. At least according to all the jokes and sit-coms.
Avatar 5:43pm
spacebrother:

My first mother-in-law hated me too. i liked her, so it was confusing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
Austin Rich:

Cruella is pretty rad. I haven't seen any of the new stuff, but as a kid, I sang this song all the time. Only later did i realize she was not really supposed to be idolized.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
Austin Rich:

Mother-In-Laws are complicated. But certainly not as bad as sitcom jokes would make you think.
Avatar 5:45pm
Mr Fab:

Castration Squad feat. Dinah Cancer, the ex of our own Don Bolles. Wonder what his mother-in-law thought of him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm
Austin Rich:

I sort of forgot how the 70's and 80's were the high mark for comedy about going crazy. I guess Napoleon XIV presaged that trend by a few years, but I think by the 2000's, that trend is no longer "PC."
Avatar 5:50pm
Mr Fab:

i have no idea what's gong on here but it's quite fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm
Austin Rich:

Welcome to the World of Tony Tani, I guess?
Avatar 5:51pm
spacebrother:

Yeah, well no one is going to play Julie Brown's "Homecoming Queen's Got A Gun" song.

Avatar 5:52pm

Tony Tani is insane and actually looked totally cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
Austin Rich:

Apparently, he was an entertainer who was Japanese, who performed in stereotypes for American audiences. But had a bit of a career in both countries, I guess? I'll have to read up on this more...

I don't know if it was done anywhere else besides Japan, but I suppose it had to be. I played about 5 or 6 versions of songs from Rocky Horror on one show a couple of years back.
